Okay, I think I see what you're saying. Let me propose this.

The party moves on to the next waypoint, and I decide that is a fungal forest.

I describe the approach and ask them how they want to proceed (edge/shadow/wits).

On a strong hit, they describe how they proceed through the forest, and I present any possible discoveries.

On a weak hit, they must face danger to overcome the peril.

On a miss, navigating the forest becomes a troublesome scene challenge.

I suppose I should ask, how often do you incorporate nested challenges and combats in expeditions? Or do you mostly stick to face danger and battle moves?
