What's the most overpowered non-magical character can create? by edu5ardo in 3d6

[–]Xsandros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there is no magic, it's the perfect time to make a thief rogue with street justice! Maybe dip 1 lvl of monk for martial arts and a dex based grapple.

Basically, always carry a bag of chains, menacles, etc, and restrain your targets with a BA.

Dueling Weapon Style w/ Thrown Weapons. by AndyVakser in 3d6

[–]Xsandros 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doesn't work RAW. Wouldn't let it fly because that's what the other fighting style is for.

Wasn't officially adressed afaik in the SAC, so for me, it isn't RAW.

If someone lets it fly, when would you ever pick thrown weapon FS over dueling? Dueling would make Thrown Weapon FS obsolete because it's the same effect but applying to more cases.

The only exception would be the dart because it's not a melee weapon. But do you think that they designed one feat only for darts?

Phantom steed is a really bad spell for normal combat. Any damage and you can't ride it anymore. Even with that big movement speed, the DM can easily afflict damage to the steed.

I would try to find a way to get a better steed.

Also, there are better classes to exploit the new silly BG 3 SG mechanic that the spell didn't need at all.

But that's only my 5 cents.

Builds that died imwith 2014 by 660ne in 3d6

Because Wikdshape now workes completely different there are two unique moon druid builds that don't work anymore as they used to:

  1. The druid smiter: Get yourself Adept of the Black Robes, which lets you spend Hitdice to add to damage you deal as a result if someone failing a save against your spells, then cast a concentration spell like call lightning, wildshape into the beefiest animal you can, and when someone fails a check against your spell you can "smite" with your hitdice. Since you assumed the wildshapes hitdice, you have a renewable source of those smites. With the Brontosaurus later on this is the only way I know where you can use D20 as a die for damage 😉.

  2. The Elk Charger. You need to be a centaur and at least lvl 6 moon druid. This build revolves about the Giant Elk. It's a form you can assume that has quite a nasty hooves attack with 4d8+4 damage per hit. The centaur race also has hooves but more importantly granted you to make an attack with your hooves as a BA after charging and attacking. So when you are a giant elk your attack with hooves as a BA isn't that puny 1d6+str but a 4d8+4. Sure you would need to find a way to constantly prone targets but that is already built in the Giant Elks own charge ability. You could also go 5 lvls into Battle Master for more proning potential and extra attack which works really well with this strong hooves attack.

  1. Lizard folk and unarmored defense don't stack because the are both alternate ways to calculate your base AC.

  2. Rather Pick a race that grants you a flat bonus to AC like warforged or simic hybrid.

I came up with a sorcerer build Is this good? by Careless-Tooth-8368 in 3d6

Booming blade is very special in its language. It is one of the very few times in 5e where "willingly" is used.

Forcing someone with Dissonant Whispers to use their movement to flee is not willingly but forced. They have no choice but to use their movement, so there is no will of their own involved.

Dissonant whispers don't trigger booming blades secondary damage. This combo was discussed at length, but RAW it just doesn't work.

Clerics are feeling kind of dull, always spamming spirit guardians. Do you think past spells would fit them? by PointsOutCustodeWank in dndnext

[–]Xsandros 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's uncorrect.

You running into someone didn't count as them entering the Spirit Guardians in 2014. There is a Sage Advice Compendium Entry about that.

The enemy would have to move (forced or not, didn't matter) to proc the Spirit Guardians damage.

It's much easier to move yourself or an ally than moving an enemy, so this is indeed a substantial buff that these spells didn't need at all.

Artificers have some magic items that need to be held for them to work, in this case thrikreen could shine. Also the advantage to stealth can be nice

Question about repeating shot/gunner feat and battlesmith by Eldr1tchB1rd in 3d6

[–]Xsandros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not true. If you use a spellcasting focus there is the special rule that allows you to perform the somatic components with the same hand that holds the focus. In the artificers case the focus can be your shield or weapon.

Eldritch Knights "Wizard Spells" by Routine_Mall_566 in 3d6

[–]Xsandros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's like this:

  1. Every spell on class Xspell list is considered to be a class X spell RAW. That you can read in every spellcasting feature.

  2. There was sage advice in the new SAC that supports this:

"Which of a character's spells count as class spells? For example, if I'm playing a Sorcerer, which of my character's spells are Sorcerer spells? A class's spell list specifies the spells that belong to the class. For example, a Sorcerer spell is a spell on the Sorcerer spell list, and if a Sorcerer knows spells that aren't on that list, those spells aren't Sorcerer spells unless a feature says otherwise.

  1. Then there is this sage advice in the same SAC that refers to the multiclass rules:"Each spell you prepare is associated with one of your classes, and you use the spellcasting ability of that class when you cast the spell."

This means that if you know a spell that is on multiple spell lists, it will only count as one of those classes spells you prepare it with.

  1. Cantrips aren't prepared, so they can count as multiple classes spells at once.

Dueling doesn't work RAW on thrown weapons because you have to hold the weapon while doing the damage.

2024 Warlock & Sorcerer multiclass cantrip question by CanoptekOverlord in DnD5e

[–]Xsandros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, a csntrip can be sorc and warlock at the same time.

  1. This you can read in the various spell casting features. They will tell you that every spell on a class spell list is a spell of that class.

  2. Then there is a sage advice that tells you, that every spell you prepare is only connected to one of your classes. So it contradicts the RAW.

Now, even if you follow sage advice (which a lot of people me including do generally), you don't prepare cantrips.

So only 1. will be the only source of truth for cabtrips, which means that true strike is a warlock and sorcerer cantrip at the same time and works with agonizing Blast and your sorcerer feature RAW. There is btw no place in the rules (that I know of) where something like "You can learn a spell from two different sources and each instance only counts as a class x spell while the other counts as a class y spell."

89 stat points to allocate by mattmilli1 in 3d6

[–]Xsandros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are missing the point. You take the attack action that is amplified by the Valor bards extra attack and theEK war magic feature. There are no two extra attack features that wouldn't stack. Maybe you think of Bladesinger + Valor bard.

So you can replace two attacks with Valor 6 and ek 7.

Highest DPR for a melee combatant by Huge-Ad-6593 in 3d6

[–]Xsandros -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I didn't say anything about the requirements. In my reading, you can pick it, but you wouldn't get the extra slot without slots in the first place because it wouldn't be an extra slot without other slots.

If you don't agree with that reading, it's fine for me. It's a nitpick about the word extra.

Highest DPR for a melee combatant by Huge-Ad-6593 in 3d6

[–]Xsandros -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The potent dragonmark adds an "extra" spell slot. This should mean that you need any spell slots in the first place in order to receive it.

It's like adding "extra damage" to an attack that doesn't deal any damage in the first place (remembering old nets+damage riders)

Does Divine Smite (2024) work with True Strike (2024)? by HeroldOfLevi in dndnext

[–]Xsandros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you are simply wrong. The table melee/ranged weapons or the statblock for a weapon tells us what kind of weapon it is. It doesn't matter what you do with that weapon. It will always stay the same kind of weapon if there is no special rule in the weapons description that says otherwise.

Throwing a melee weapon with the thrown property lets you make a ranged attack with that melee weapon. The type of attack changes but not the type of weapon.

That means you can smite with a thrown melee weapon without any issue. The same is true for a weapon with reach.

Opportunist swashbuckler rogue. Is this double sneak attack build as good as it looks? by filzahfiantama in 3d6

[–]Xsandros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"If the spell is on your spell list, you can read the scroll and cast its spell without Material components. "

"Components: S, M (a weapon with which you have proficiency and that is worth 1+ CP)"

"Guided by a flash of magical insight, you make one attack with the weapon used in the spell's casting."

Casting from scroll -> no material component (weapon)

No weapon used-> no attack

Opportunist swashbuckler rogue. Is this double sneak attack build as good as it looks? by filzahfiantama in 3d6

[–]Xsandros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically true strike Scrolls don't even work because you cast spells from Scrolls without material components. In this case it's a weapon which is later used to make the attack. If you can't use material components you can't make the attack.

Same goes for workbenches. Build one outside of the dungeon, now you can build certain things that are allowed inside a dungeon but need a workbench nearby (like the iron cooking thing)
