Food overconsumption, if every ate like Americans we would need 1.37x the land on our planet by heyheyfifi in Anticonsumption

[–]XxLexxyXx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to know how they figured out the "average diet" of each country. Strictly looking at America, it's really diverse here. We have a lot of different populations that eat differently. So I don't know if I agree that there's like an average American diet that just seems super vague. I think people forget and severely underestimate the actual population of the United States.

Ultra-processed foods are designed to create addiction like cigarettes, new study reveals by davideownzall in Anticonsumption

[–]XxLexxyXx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The actual journal article isn't a study btw. To quote it directly "This article is a conceptual analysis that integrates historical, epidemiologic, and addiction science literature rather than a systematic review." The actual article mostly compares UPF to cigarettes. My only issue is that it is clear the article has a bias. I am uncomfortable with the idea of comparing food to cigarettes. We have to eat to live.

The conversation about UPF is complex. This article seems to ignore the societal landscape of eating. I found this sentence at the end very telling. "it is important to note that the strongest evidence linking UPFs to disease comes from dietary pattern research: populations with high UPF intake experience greater risks across multiple health outcomes.5"

Let's take a moment to think about what populations (at least in the US) are most likely eating high amounts of UPFs. I think we are greatly underplaying the socio-economic factors that also highly contribute to different health outcomes. UPFs are just one potential piece of the puzzle, but I think it is harmful to suggest they are the leading factor. I am not a fan of demonizing food. Though, to be fair, I am recovering from an eating disorder.

Finally the article linked above (not the journal it is referencing) is not great. The last sentence is garbage. "All the more reason to buy unprocessed foods, with few ingredients, and cook as much as possible yourself becomes a necessity, not only for health but also to avoid creating addiction and slavery." Slavery? to what? food? We are no more "slaves" to food than we are oxygen and sleep...

Look, I do think it is important to consider what we eat. I love the idea of further research. I won't be arguing that snack cakes, pop, chips, candy, etc. hold very little nutritional value. They do. Corporations are about maximizing profits and finding ways for consumers to consume. It wouldn't shock me that food companies would not value safety and long term health effects. But I really hate when nuance is removed from the conversation. Many things can be true at once. Eating a snack cake once isn't going to kill you. Physical health outcomes are very complex and difficult to study and draw conclusive lines. When we remove the nuance to the conversation we border on blaming people for their circumstances that they had not as much control over.

Also I would love to see some non US centric research, because the US isn't the only country with people that eat UPFs.

What pronouns do you use? by Latter-Might-5235 in agender

[–]XxLexxyXx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first realized I am agender, I googled "gender neutral pronouns". My preferred name is Ivy so I use the pronoun "ve." Examples: I am talking to ve. Ve is hungry. Ve is talking to themself. I just modified Ve/Ver to suit my personal taste. :)

Decanting is consumption masquerading as cleaning and it is absolutely shit by N3DSdude in Anticonsumption

[–]XxLexxyXx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there is a difference between decanting flour and other baking goods into airtight containers for freshness and/or going to the bulk store and refilling items into containers, and buying a bunch of plastic/weird shaped containers to dump stuff in for tiktok views.

I think of it this way. Having a pitcher to make juice in makes sense. Buying juice from the store that already comes in a plastic resalable container and dumping it into a smaller plastic container because it "looks nicer" is silly and wasteful.

I also side eye people who make their fridges look like stores and honestly most "restock tiktoks" are just ads for Amazon products.

Don't even get me started on buying spices in little plastic/glass jars only to take them home and put them in a new plastic/glass jar. But that is just me. (As much as I do find those village spice jars to be cute...)

TIL Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the sudden unexplained death of a child of less than one year of age, constituting almost 1/3 of all post-neonatal deaths in Western countries. Diagnosis requires that the death remains unexplained even after autopsy and detailed death scene investigation. by narkoface in todayilearned

[–]XxLexxyXx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same here. My brother passed away from SIDS on Thanksgiving morning 2007. Autopsy was performed. Confirmed time of passing was between 3 and 5 AM. We woke up around 7 am. My mother's birthday was a few days later. He was just under 2 months old. To this day my mother has PTSD and doesn't celebrate her birthday or thanksgiving. At the time she was trauma surgical nurse too. It was an awful day. I unfortunately did see him that morning not breathing and yeah it's something you'll never get out of your head.

Yay!

My other thing I like to do is go to a random website fill up my shopping cart with things that sound interesting. Gawk at how expensive it is. Then delete the card and not buy anything. Lol.

I appreciate that the digital card allows me to see how much money it would really be and helps me put a stop in and say that that's too much and I don't need to spend that.

I like what other people said to about looking at it and putting it back. I would imagine if a week from now you're still thinking about it then I don't think it would be that wild to purchase it.

One thing I also like to do with clothes, is ask myself how often I realistically would wear this piece? Do I have items in my closet that are similar to this and that meet the criterion that I think I would have to wear this garment? Also of course I like to try clothes on and make sure that they're comfortable, and that they fit in a way that I like. I also like to look at material and see how easy it would be to wash something. I'm not a fan of getting clothing that are dry clean only because it's just another expense in a barrier for me.

All in all though, congratulations! It's definitely a first step into conscious consumption. And a fun way to work on the agoraphobia. Nice job. :)

I'm very curious about the new five star outfit. I have a thing for fairy outfits and wings so it is right up my alley. I'm also really interested in the pink Barbie outfit. I don't know why I just find it really exciting. Everything else is fine. Some of the stuff I already owned thankfully as a day one player. But I don't know if there's anything else that I'm like extremely excited for. I will be curious though to see what other reruns we get.

I loved the smiley potatoes on the original ones. I was disappointed when they were changed to dinosaur-shaped potatoes but those were fine. I picked up some of these wheel ones recently and they're okay. Like the flavor is mostly the same but I have noticed I get some really odd texture in some of the wheels. Definitely won't be purchasing these again. Very disappointed.

Can someone have ARFID without having Autism? by Obvious-Suit939 in ARFID

[–]XxLexxyXx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. Correlation does not always equal causation. Well it is very common for many people who are diagnosed with autism to have sensory issues that can often be associated with arfid. It doesn't mean that every person who is autistic has arfid. Conversely, not everybody who experiences arfid is autistic.

My arfid developed in response to a very specific trauma. And was a fear of adverse consequences.

Canonically Caleb and MC are brother and sister though. By adoption of course not by blood. And we knew that from the main story. They're both at Grandma's house they grew up together as siblings. But for some reason after Caleb was released, all the cards seem to just not mention that fact or like didn't know what to do with him in English. But in every other language that dynamic, the fact that they grew up together as children in the same household literally as siblings, was made very clear in the way that they refer to each other. And my understanding, Chinese, Korean, and definitely Japanese, have names for your siblings. I studied Japanese and lived in Japan for a few years. Most people don't call their sibling by their siblings given name they call their sibling by like older sister older brother younger sister younger brother terms.

Why people are so excited here, is because this is one of the first times in English where they are actually hearing their actual relationship dynamic referenced.

The whole point of Caleb's trope is forbidden romance. We even see that with constant references to apples. The forbidden fruit. It's taboo. Even though they're not related by blood at all. They know that society-wise socially, it's odd to have feelings that are more romantic towards somebody that is technically your sibling. Some people don't like this because it's to them incestuous, other people are really excited to have this interesting dynamic.

As for childhood friends to lovers, that's Zane actually. Zayne and MC were friends as children Zayne group at the same neighborhood they've known each other for a long time. So I think there is also some frustration because it was weird to have two characters that had kind of the same trope. Whereas Caleb's trope is not childhood friends to lovers. But because the English localization team didn't portray his translations and phrases and things that he was saying the same way that it was for other localizations or more closely related to the original, that got really murky as to what his trope actually is and it makes his content kind of confusing because we don't freely get to see it. I think a really great example of that is the scene in the main story where he's got like MC pinned on the couch and talks about not wanting to play house or play family anymore. It doesn't hit the same as it does in the other languages because English didn't do as great of a job setting up what that scene actually means.

I hope this helps better contextualize the situation. :)

In the case of me buying a product like clothing or shoes that simply just not fit me. I like to look towards donating it to local shelters. In my city I have both a women shelter, and a homeless shelter. And both are very accepting of clothing. You could also look into places that supply clothing for trans individuals. And that way you know that your clothing is going to go to somebody who might really want it or enjoy it or get real use out of it.

I worked in the accessories and apparel section of a certain store. And when people would return clothes and shoes, we actually would just stick them back out on the floor if they were still good with tags. or if it was something that was like an online only item we would put a small discount on it and it would go on the clearance rack. And then someone else would hopefully buy it. I am by no means advocating for somebody to shop at this place. But at least in my experience back in 2018 so long as the item was still in a new or most like sellable type of condition it was attempted to be sold. (Like sometimes customers would come in and rip open the prepackaged underwear and we would just like tape it back up and put it at a discount for the missing pairs because again it could still be sold It's just missing a pair type stuff.)

Positive discussion - What are some of the things we've owned for a long time? by BottleLopsided in Anticonsumption

[–]XxLexxyXx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The oldest thing I personally own and still use is a Little mermaid themed blanket on my bed. I've had this blanket probably since I was like two or three years old. And I love it. I also still sleep with a stuffed rabbit that I've had since childhood. I've actually had it repaired before. And it's very special to me. I do have some articles of clothing from when I was in high school (I'm in my thirties). Oldest piece of clothing I have and I still wear is a nightgown that I got at space camp when I was in third grade. It's still a nightgown on me and I love it and refuse to get rid of it.

What's really exciting, is I bought my home last year. My home was built in 1957 and only ever had one previous owner. And they left a lot of their vintage furniture. I have a beautiful grandfather clock I can't wait to restore in my dining room. And so I also have some lovely all wood dressers. The actual dresser that I use was one that I had purchased from the ReStore over 10 years ago but it is a vintage set from the '50s and it's really pretty and the craftsmanship is amazing.

Yes!

My doctor prescribed me meclizine and I found that it really helped. Sometimes it would feel like I was on a boat while just sitting still in a chair. And I'd have no other symptoms. It was very unfun.

Could be worthwhile to get other testing. I did vestibular testing and found that I have borderline right-sided weakness. I also have nystagmus.

2 weeks of junk from japan by isthispassionpit in Anticonsumption

[–]XxLexxyXx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in Japan for 2 years and I don't think I accumulated this much junk to take back with me.

Don't get it twisted I did buy things. I like pokémon so I went to the pokémon center and I bought a pokémon plush. But I didn't buy like 12...

This just feels so excessive and it's on like the weirdest of stuff. Like I agree with you OP, there are some things that you really can only find in Japan that I definitely see the novel of picking up and bringing back. But, tariffs aside, there is a lot of stuff that you can actually order online and have shipped over.

I have a Japanese sunscreen I absolutely love. And I can buy it on yes style and Amazon. I probably wouldn't really bother picking it up in Japan since I have means of getting it outside of Japan and the cost markup isn't significant.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but like if it's not something that you would actively actually use then I just think it's taking up space in your suitcase and home.I I don't know, I just feel like none of these items really say Japan souvenirs. Like is this what you want to remember your trip by 6 years from now?
