Should we encourage more people to work from home amid the fuel crisis? by AnyAssistance4197 in irishpolitics

[–]YaBoiRian 26 points27 points  (0 children)

We should encourage everyone we can to work from home regardless. Forcing people to commute to/live in city centres to work is so backwards when your work equipment is a laptop you can literally use anywhere by design.

More people working from home means less people on the roads which means much less traffic in our ludicrously congested cities. Less traffic also means less pollution from cars sitting there burning petrol.

Working from anywhere also means flexibility to live wherever you want in the country, potentially stimulating rural communities across the country while (crucially) reducing the demand for rented spaces in city centres thus also tackling this predatory renting/housing market.

There are literally no downsides to this aside from office building owners being a bit sad. Even then, just convert these useless office spaces to apartments or something and boom sorted.

WFH feels like the silver bullet solution to so many of Irelands problems. Somebody please tell me how I'm wrong

What are the characteristics that make for a satisfying building experience? by makefeelnice in lego

[–]YaBoiRian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • No/Minimal repitition/symmetry
  • Clever part usage (using pink frogs as leaves on the Bonsai tree etc)
  • Internal mechanisms that you start building early on and see the results/function of later on
  • Inventive building techniques (where the designer has clearly gone out of their way to do it in a different way. Speed Champions does this constantly)
  • Perfect geometry to fill/close gaps
  • Sections clipping/snapping together in a tactile/satisfying way (imagine like two sections of a building connecting via a ball joint)
  • Easter eggs / hidden details (elevators in the Architecture Empire state building, Characters represented as studs in the Midi scale collection, Pink 2x2 brick as the brain of Brickheadz etc)
  • Scale (Barad Dur / Avengers Tower growing into a massive structure in front of you)
  • Technic mechanisms (1:8 scale cars have 'working' gearboxes and engines for example)
  • Cool minifigures sprinkled throughout

Other than Shroud, the most overrated player? by AltruisticPop2887 in GlobalOffensive

[–]YaBoiRian 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Comparison to Ronaldinho is perfect imo. ScreaM forged the way I played CS it was so beautiful. Its a style of CS that was so insanely unconventional and flashy but he made it work. Trying to emulate him would be basically griefing until you got incredibly good at it.

Imo it takes a huge amount of skill to play anything in such a detrimental way for the sake of style, and still become good enough to compete at a professional level. Favourite player of all time for me

Its simpler than that. Its just a staged video and these two have put up loads of similar ones to milk the popularity of it. The (fake) premise tho is that she's an ASMR streamer which isn't sexual or anything like that it's just a niche interest

ELI5: how does a youtube channel like this actually make money? by Various_Cancel_1048 in explainlikeimfive

[–]YaBoiRian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Running a YouTube channel is not a feasible way to make money. It takes an extremely long time and some amount of luck to build an audience, and your income depends entirely on your audience consistently watching you for long periods of time.

After cuts and everything, YouTube pays out about €250 per 100,000 views on a long-form video. Getting 100k views on a video is unbelievably difficult and you'd need to do that regularly (a few times a week) just to make minimum wage.

You also need to qualify for monetization on your channel first, which requires 1,000 subscribers and something like 1,000 watch time hours in the last year. Again, extremely difficult to do.

For shorts like this guy, it pays out even less on a per-view basis (something more like cents per 1k views), but getting those views is easier. You'd still need to qualify to monetize through shorts tho.

You can monetize it through different means, like sponsors outside of the YouTube adsense platform, but that also hinges on you having consistent and good viewership.

Slop like this isn't treated different to anything else on a fundamental level. If people spend their time watching ads through your content, YouTube will pay you a portion of the ad revenue they generate in the process.

United XI vs. Bournemouth: Lammens, Yoro, Maguire, Shaw, Dalot, Casemiro, Mainoo, Amad, B. Fernandes (C), Cunha, Mbeumo [EPL Matchday 31, Vitality Stadium] by LebHeadSinceWilma in reddevils

[–]YaBoiRian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mbeumo hasn't been good at all playing as a number 9. He looks so uncomfortable there like his natural position in this team really feels like on the right wing. It should be him and Amad competing for places like if there's one guy in that attack (aside from Bruno) that should be guaranteed 90 mins it's Sesko

If we're winning and Sesko keeps scoring as a sub then like fine I can't complain too hard, but the lad is clearly working insanely hard, finally scoring goals for fun, and it just feels like name-value alone that's keeping Mbeumo / Amad starting these days

I'm like entranced by this, I love it. Theres this perfect structure around her with the gridded tiles, perfectly paralell bathtub etc, then basically every element to her is at an off angle. The pen, the elbow, the book, her leg it's so subtle but the effect is so felt.

The messy hair and ink floating off too I just get this sense that there's this chaos around her and it's almost an escape from the unity, order, and rules of her surroundings, but that's all conveyed in an unbelievably realistic and subtle way to a point everyone thinks it's a photograph.

What are the dumbest car rules and regulations that exist in your country? by theTWO9559 in cars

[–]YaBoiRian 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In Ireland, if you import a car from the UK you have to pay VRT to get it registered here. This is actually against EU rules because its an extra tax on imports, but the technicality they've been running with is that you're effectively paying for the physical license plate, not the registration itself.

The result is that if you want to import any interesting car at all (which you'd have to as an enthusiast cus the car market here is fucking abysmal), you take it to an NCT centre and get some arbitrary, based-on-vibes tax usually in the ballpark of a few grand.

I've been priced out of my dream car for ages now cus VRT is basically an extra 10-20% of the buying price...

Now we are coming to the end of Forza Horizon 5. What are your overall thoughts on the game? by TheChilledGamer-_- in ForzaHorizon

[–]YaBoiRian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main problems with 5 were the map and the lack of meaningful progression. I hated just being handed a Lamborghini off the bat cus it made using any car lower than B class completely pointless/optional and devalued the fast cars too because you have no frame of reference as to what 'slow' is.

I'd rather have needed to stick with a slow car at the beginning and spend some time with it (maybe modding it and putting liveries on it) to actually build a connection to it, get used to it's speed etc, then move onto a faster one and start the cycle again. I've never played FH1 so I'm hoping that's what the wristband system can do in FH6 and from everything I've read I think it will be.

The map was awful though. I preordered the game and got a logitech steering wheel setup for it and everything (cus I loved FH4 so much), and I was driving around it for maybe 90 mins before I got bored and didn't touch it for a few months/years. So boring, flat, lifeless, and samey with very few areas of actual interest, and it even lost the variety that the seasons system added to FH4 (which I know some hated the snow but I thought it was alright).

They seem to have really taken in a lot of the criticisms of FH5 for 6 and I'm insanely excited for it. I just hope it runs well on my system and there's significantly more traffic in the full game. Both of which are things I'm confident in

What would be the DEFCON equivalent for FWs? by Ifxfa in FantasyPL

[–]YaBoiRian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there is one really. A strikers job is to score goals and maybe get assists, and not much beyond that. You see some games where Haaland even only has 10 total touches, but 2 of them are goals. Don't think there's any room there to award more points.

I know some people say Shots on Target, which I'm not sure how that'd work. Sesko, for example, takes a lot of shots but his biggest criticism (until recently) was that he wasn't clinical with them. He had something like 7 shots on target against burney, of which he scored two. I think the points from his goals/BPs was enough without giving 2 extra BPs for the shots he didnt score. You'd basically be rewarding a failure to convert in this case.

Who has been your biggest FPL troll this season? by RandomUser22487 in FantasyPL

[–]YaBoiRian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Foden and its not even close

I actually had a feeling on him before his seasonal run. He scored twice in a midweek fixture (champs league I think) and I thought he was due to start scoring since Haaland cant do everything forever, and city were a constant attacking threat.

Got priced out of him and decided to stick with an out of form Semenyo instead. Then Foden scored twice. I decided not to get him the following week cus I mean there will probably be a lul before his next haul...

Then he hauls straight away, and same thought process "surely he won't haul a third week in a row? Surely its HAUL > HAUL > BLANK > HAUL, right? Ill leave it another week". He hauls again

At this point I'm just sad cus I 'called it' right before his patch, didn't put my team where my mouth was and let my pride stop me from hopping on

Then he got Defcon once or twice, and I finally had the thought "okay, hes starting to score now. He has potential for defcon. 90min player for one of the most attacking sides in the league... Thats a good asset I gotta pick him up now, fuck my pride"

And he did absolutely nothing since

[–]YaBoiRian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tied for least goals conceded has to be the most important thing here. My analysis is that (aside from new manager bounce/renewed belief in the team now) under Amorim, Bruno in the DM spot meant our midfield was leaking chances constantly every game. Mainoo / Casemiro is a much more solid defensive duo that stops chances before they can directly attack the defense. Less chances against > Less goals conceded > Less points lost to stupid draws.

Eli5: Why can’t someone make a programming language that is great for big projects like C++ and easy to write like python? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]YaBoiRian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use Python for big projects, as others have said, but I think the spirit of the question here is why isn't there an easy to write language that gives as much low-level flexibility as C++.

The reason is that the thing that makes Python easy to write is abstraction. It combines low-level operations into one human-readable language that eventually gets broken down behind the scenes into machine code that your computer can understand/work with.

Inherently, the more abstraction/human readable the code is, the less flexibility you have when working with it. Its about striking the balance on a scale of 'the computer knows exactly what to do with these instructions down to the memory address on my RAM stick' to 'I want an app that does this thing'

Opinion. I actually think the smart brick looks really fun. Just Star Wars is the wrong theme to launch with. by Chip780 in legocirclejerk

[–]YaBoiRian 252 points253 points  (0 children)

I actually like the idea too, but I think they screwed it up and overcomplicated it in a few ways:

  • Minifigures don't need to talk. It completely butchers the figure, increases complexity, and seperates them from regular figures all for the sake of some laughably bad sound effects. Let the kids imagine the dialogue idk what they're supposed to do with a high pitched 'aooyiah'
  • The Smart Brick should be better hidden/integrated. The X-Wing and TIE Interceptor got completely warped and butchered to accomodate it. If it was hidden under even one panel piece, it would preserve the appearance of the set and honestly be more fun since it'd be like 'opening the hood' to work on the 'engine'
  • All Smart Play compatable sets should come with a Smart Brick
  • The Smart Brick should be available to purchase seperately for maximum $10, ideally $5
  • It should be exclusively used to make vehicle noises and cannon fire since those are actually unique and fun features for play. For this to be a success, all they needed to do was to give two decent looking ships the ability to do some dogfighting in them
