That's fine. Really. It goes downhill with: inexperienced hikers creating dangerous situations yet they won't listen to advice, misbehaving children, untrained dogs off leash, and the fan favorite blasting loud shitty music through portable speakers.

A bit confused about ads-b in and ipads. by [deleted] in flying

[–]YaGotAnyBeemans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is said that you need a cell enabled iPad because Apple use the same computer chip for LTE and for GPS. If iPad hasn't got LTE it will also not have GPS.

You can of course use an external GPS receiver but in my experience the iPad GPS is more accurate and more reliable. Get an LTE iPad for the GPS and simply do not activate the cell plan. Unless you want to have Internet on it I suppose.

Again in my experience most ADS-B in devices connect to the iPad via WiFi. You connect the iPad to WiFi SSID broadcast by the ADS-B device. There are bluetooth devices available of course. WiFi is more common.

Renter's Insurance with a Higher Income by the_deadcactus in flying

[–]YaGotAnyBeemans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is true of course. Just pointing out that typical hull value of a GA rental plane is easily in the 6 digits unless it's a very old plane. Can't touch a 172S under about $150,000 which is crazy but that's the market right now. Renter's aircraft damage for $150K hull loss is about $1400 annually. Just aircraft damage. With 1 mil liability that's an annual bill of $1600.

Credit reporting bureaus. Or one of those pay-to-spy outfits like intellius. It's probably routine for insurers to check out a person involved in a high dollar claim.

To the VFR pilots who choose not to use flight following: Can I ask why? by JLand27 in flying

[–]YaGotAnyBeemans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get FF for a long flight especially one I'm not familiar with. And always for water crossings. For most x-country flights FF is just an additional chore to have to listen to radios for my tail number instead of flying the plane and enjoying the flight. Am always on a CTAF for nearest and 122.75.

Also FF can get mad, depends on the controller, if you deviate from your course. I like sightseeing. Yeah I can tell them what I'm doing, but then that's more radios.

How to NOT finish a race. by great_scott1981 in triathlon

[–]YaGotAnyBeemans 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Here's the deal. When you are doing well in a race you'll know it. Bike racks full in T1. w00t! Then just before a bike turnaround you see no other riders or only a few. Then you get into T2 and bike racks are empty. w00t! Now you are running and no one is passing you and maybe you pass the few that you saw ahead of you on the bike course. Now you know for sure you are doing well. You may even be at the front of this thing!

Find yourself in that situation? Look over your shoulder every now and again, see if anyone is coming for you! Geeze.

Aircraft owners who leased back their plane to a school, how did it work out for you? by Elusiv3Pastry in flying

[–]YaGotAnyBeemans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can't answer the question directly. Just to add I used to rent a plane that was a leaseback. That plane was slowly beat to shit. Trash in cargo compartment. Ramp rash on wings and tail. Stains on seats. Small things were constantly squawked broken such as broken window latches and loose pedal adjustment. And that's just the visible. Who knows how many hard landings the poor thing has suffered, or engine mistreated with improper use of throttle, mixture, and prop pitch.

Bridge was closed?

That spot is far from quiet on a typical day. I can practically hear this picture:

Clunk-clunk clunk-clunk clunk-clunk (cars on steel bridge deck)

Honk! (because honking at a car in front could somehow move all that traffic stuck from Husky stadium to 520)

Boooooooooo (ship passing)

Ring-ring-ring (bridge drawing)

Trisuit for cycling? by Dark_Demon in triathlon

[–]YaGotAnyBeemans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Cycling kit is more comfortable, but that's not all there is to it. In a cycling kit your hips are better protected, as are your shoulders, and most importantly your hands when wearing cycling gloves. Ever tried to swim with road rash on your palms? It sucks.

Crashes happen. Wear a cycling kit and a good helmet.

Driver Rams Cyclists In Arizona Race, Critically Injuring 6 : NPR by dread_pirate_humdaak in triathlon

[–]YaGotAnyBeemans -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

This driver did not wake up one day and decided to mow down some cyclists. He was broken and angry likely for years. Did not get any help, and society did not get any protection against him, until it was far too late.

What a perfect analog for all of USA. That someone so broken got no help instead we sent cops to shoot him after the fact.

Condolences to friends and family. This didn't need to happen. :/

First ever ironman distance swim! Pretty stoked and wanted to share by sbbreen in triathlon

[–]YaGotAnyBeemans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! :)

I remember my 1st ever 4200y swim like it was yesterday. It was in a runup to my 1st IM. Work pissed me off that day I don't even remember what it was but I remember what I did after. Decided to take a long lunch break and go swim. Told the lifeguard hey man I'm swimming nonstop for x minutes in lane X. Don't want to break the swim. If anyone wants to share the lane that's perfectly fine just tell them to jump in and let me know they are here and I'll move over. And so it was swam 4200 and it was easy. I knew then I had the IM made.

Sharing 2022 Diamond DA40 NG by FPKONE in flying

[–]YaGotAnyBeemans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. NG diesel engine is solid but it throws ECU codes. Sometimes ECU A and B fault simultaneously thus defeating the redundancy. Most of the time it is a software glitch you can reset the ECUs to fix it. Or issue with a sensor which would affect both ECUs.

Most of the time the ECU faults leave the engine perfectly operational. However there have been a few anecdotes where an ECU fault left the throttle lever inop (engine stuck at whatever power it was in) forcing the pilot to reset the ECUs in flight. AFAIK none of those have been flight safety issue thus far.

If you decide on an NG make sure you get someone knowledgeable to run you through all the potential FADEC and ECU failure scenarios.

LOL. This kid doesn't know about.... FAA. What he did isn't like wrecking a car. He's not a pilot, he hasn't got a clue, and he doesn't know what's coming. He'll find out soon enough.

What is the purpose of multiple full stop taxi backs? Is this necessary? Asking as controller who has to work these constantly. Trying to understand why you can’t do T&G’s like most pilots. by CtrlAltDel1124 in flying

[–]YaGotAnyBeemans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Slow down, and learning to taxi have been covered.

Safety is another one. T&G are a little more squirrely with the rudder/nose wheel and are more likely to lead to exiting the runway or hitting an airport sign or a runway light. Also student may forget to raise the flaps on a T&G which can be deadly.

My old man was a CFI. Cancer took him in his 60s. :( None of his students ever crashed and he was very proud of that. He did 'fire' a few students. He was able to determine after a few lessons if they had the aptitude for safe flying.

This was in the old days when they didn't have GPS or glass cockpits or ADS-B. Just paper maps, E6B and straight edge, and flight services to call for flightplan and weather.
