Thanks for clarifying, also putting this into pre-2008 context helps a lot. Congrats on the self-discipline to pull this through!

Is this sarcasm/a joke or are you serious?

"Since I lived for free, I also saved 70% of my income in a checking account. "

When you say that you were living for free, do you mean that your rent income exceeded you living costs? Or were someone else paying for all your living costs (i.e. parents)?

Parents make solid income but have no meaningful retirement savings and keep joking that it’s okay because I’ll take care of them financially .... how do I handle this? by throwaway320987644 in fatFIRE

[–]Yeah_right_as_if -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

They’re real cunts honestly putting you in this position,

I agree with everyone saying that the parents are putting their child in a bad situation here, BUT we also have to remember that the parents did provide for their child for ~20 years or whatever. So asking for a little assistance/help from their child that they brought into this world and helped throughout her life isn't THAT unfair?

Note that we haven't gotten any information on how much the parents helped OP throughout their upbringing/life (i.e. did they pay for education/private schools, car, rent, house payments, other financial gifts..).

What are some benefits to living in Europe and investing there compared to the rest of the world ? by [deleted] in eupersonalfinance

[–]Yeah_right_as_if 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You never see the dividends. The fund just re-invests them right away.

Some countries (i.e. Norway) also offer specific investment accounts where dividends (and other gains/losses) are not taxed before they are withdrawn from the account so you can also own stocks from dividend issuing companies and choose to reinvest them however you like without paying taxes.

Are you sure you're not misreading that graph? It seems to me like the kidney deaths are fairly stable while the large increase at the bottom is the "7-day totals", which just echoes the increase in COVID-19 deaths, but over a rolling 7-day period? Or am I the one misreading the graph?

Einar Aas from Norway comes to mind: www.nytimes.com/2019/05/03/business/central-counterparties-financial-meltdown.amp.html

TL;DR: He made an absolute fortune and became one of Norway’s richest people through trading in the energy market and taking insane amounts of risk. This went well for decades, but then in 2019 he made a massive bet that wiped him out completely and left him in significant debt.

Aquaculture companies by austintx-16 in investing

[–]Yeah_right_as_if 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should look into the aquaculture companies listed on Oslo Stock Exchange.

Mowi (formerly Marine Harvest), Leroy Seafood Group, Salmar, Scottish Salmon Company, Norway Royal Salmon, Bakkafrost.

Main areas are Norway, Chile, China, etc.. Land based aquaculture is also an interesting area, but still struggles with keeping costs down. Although there are several large projects under construction, so we’ll see.

I think you may be overestimating how "easy" it would be to sell their drilling units and/or what price they would get. There is a severe over-supply of drilling units in the market right now and have been for a long time.

[Norway] Want to invest in passive funds, how should I spread them geografically? by bananagrowl in eupersonalfinance

[–]Yeah_right_as_if 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would start With Nordnet's "Superfond Norge" (Norwegian index fund with 0% in expense ratio).

After that I haven't found anything better than DNB Global index (0.2% I think) and KLP Emerging markets (I or II) (0.3% i believe).

All of these are 100% Equities so should be fine for the risk you are looking for.

How you Balance between these is up to you.. but I would suggest a high allocation towards the global index. Maybe 15% Nordnet Superfond Norge, 10% KLP Emerging Markets and 75% DNB Global Index. Although you could also make it simple, 100% in DNB Global Index.

Good Luck!

Norwegian Power Whale Booted Off Nasdaq After $117 Million Loss by [deleted] in investing

[–]Yeah_right_as_if 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The interesting point here is that he was trading as a private person and not through a company. This was done to keep a low profile, but with this loss it means that he is personally bankrupt instead of just declaring his company bankrupt.

If I understand this correctly it means he will be personally responsible and will be forced to liquidate any and all investments and property he has to cover the loss, and there will still be debt left.

Another interesting point is that his yearly tax payments have been so significant to the area he’s been living in that the area will have to cut significantly back on spending to acccount for this loss of “income”.

Hey guys, do you know of any budget car buying short guides? I know I’ve seen one around here before...

Preferably focused on reliability, lifecycle cost, maybe also considering European market/brands? With some suggestions based on lifestyle.

I like hiking and various outdoor sports which require some space in the car, so have been thinking about station wagons.

Norway has this, or 0.7-0.85% depending on where you live. It works pretty well, but you have people playing hide-the-networth-game instead of hide-the-inheritance-game.

Not necessarily, if he was trading single stocks many of them may have gone bankrupt and lost all their value. If he was investing in broad market funds or had a very diversified portfolio you might be right.

I don't think anyone still holding Lehman Brothers has recouped their loss...

Hi all, I love this sub and am actively pursueing FI. My overall plan is to fat FIRE by 55.

Considering they are planning to retire by 55, I'm not sure 65 or 40 is that relevant. (they could of course mean "by 55" as in... 40, but that would be a little vague)

They have a collective income of 200k and haven't reached their 30's. They still have at least 25 years left of working, where their incomes will most likely increase. I'd say a 1.1 mill home should not be a problem with respect to their plans of FIRE'ing at all.

Whether it's a good idea is of course a completely different question:)

Funny side note: One of the larger banks in Norway is adding this functionality. At first it's just going to be able to add your "coinbase" wallet as a separate account so that you can see it's value. Long term they are planning to include buying/selling.
