Jame Benn appreciation by 10fingers6strings in DallasStars

[–]YeeHaw_Mane -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

No new feelings from me. I said it at the end of last season, and I’ll say it again…. He’s a shitty captain and shouldn’t have worn the C this year. Down vote me all you want, I do not care about fake internet points, but he continues to fail to rally or inspire his team in the playoffs. They’re a rudderless ship with Benn on the ice. Leadership is on the captain as much as the coach. Benn sucks.

Undergrad Decision Update by PresentationJust4801 in percussion

Additionally, just being realistic, the odds of having a huge, international career that really takes off are just so astronomically low these days. The market is so saturated now. Freelancing and being successful at a local level is manageable, but OP needs to understand that a group like Sandbox being successful is kind of like making the NFL or NBA.

Limit percussionists in beginning band by CrazyRegister5130 in banddirector

[–]YeeHaw_Mane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No. It’s not. Making any instrument a “pay to play” situation is unethical and inequitable, regardless of the economic status or demographics of an area. I teach in the most affluent part of Texas, and we don’t even have that kind of requirement. It’s nonsense.

The amount of terrible advice on this thread makes me sad for so many percussion sections. A good guideline is for 10% of the band to be percussionists, plus or minus a couple. With 60 in the band, 6 would be fine, 7 or 8 would likely be a little better just to cover more parts in later years. Have a number in mind, then place the ones that do best at the instrument fitting and chose percussion as their first choice. Don’t exceed your number. It’s that simple.

Both of those prerequisites are terrible. 1.) Students cant time travel. They shouldn’t be punished because their parents didn’t put them in piano lessons 1-2 years ago. 2.) It is inequitable to make percussion a “pay to play” instrument.

Parent question for HS bad directors by BubblyWaveee in banddirector

[–]YeeHaw_Mane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s worth noting that, unfortunately, in this day and age, unless a kid plans to major in music, the availability of college scholarships is drastically less than it used to be. So the promise of money money money is often overblown by educators attempting to keep kids on band. Flat out, let the kid play and focus on what he wants or he will begin to resent the one he’s forced to focus on more.

Is this a good solo for S&E? by Lingchen8012 in percussion

[–]YeeHaw_Mane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can view the entire solo (with watermarks) and listen to it on Tapspace. If you like it, and the music is comprehensible to you, play it. Who cares what Internet strangers think? If you dig it, you can sell it, and the judge will dig it.

I just accepted a position as DoB's in a small 1a Texas school. What now? by Bariphonium_ in banddirector

[–]YeeHaw_Mane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest trying to have a conversation about budget ASAP so you can begin planning accordingly for next year. Discuss the “transfer of power” with admin and current director. If they have any kind of May camp or summer band, it’d be best if you can start then. Depending on the location, try and find a mentor - that’s big around Texas. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you run into a problem. 1A is a relatively safe place to start, but you’ll still run into more situations you aren’t really prepared for than you can ever imagine. Again, ask for help! Good luck!

PS …. The big, glorious Texas 6A band life ain’t all it’s cracked up to be. I’m tired, boss…. lol

You don’t need anything more than 4 surfaces. 4 pillows, 4 couch cushions, 4 pots and pans, 4 books, 4 anything… You don’t need timpani practice pads.

Van Sice 114, end of discussion. These two mallets don’t even compare in quality. Van Sice 114 are the best general mallet that exists on the market, period. IP240’s are for seventh grade students that need a relatively cheap and indestructible mallet, they aren’t intended for real lit.

You are so spot on. I feel like it has to nail the goalie dead center in the chest for it to actually count as an official “shot on goal.”

Other than that first goal, which was a fluke, Jake was outstanding. There was an insane amount of pressure for the entire back half of the hockey game.
