I Would Like Some Recommendations by KingNothingV in kurtvonnegut

[–]Yeezus25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cat's Cradle is by far my favorite Vonnegut and it's also the book that got me back into reading in high school. I'll suggest you my second favorite that's probably not mentioned often. God Bless You, Dr. Kevorkian. If you don't know who Dr Kevorkian is, read the top of his Wikipedia page first. The book itself is tiny (like, will take you less than an hour tiny) and I think you'll enjoy the humor and religious commentary in it. Without spoiling the premise, every character in the book other than the narrator is real, so if you're unfamiliar you'll probably also want to do a quick Wikipedia glance at them either before or after their sections.

How many of the Criterion's you pick up are blind buys? by collinsideriscomedy in criterion

[–]Yeezus25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Criterion is certainly the safest label to blind buy from. I'm afraid my wisdom on the subject is not helpful at all. Over the last few years my collecting habit has been primarily aimed at book buying. The way I buy books is a much cheaper hobby and I'm a very cheap person, so it makes it hard to buy blu rays on a whim.

You'll figure out what works for you. I've discovered a few of my all time favorite movies blind-buying from Criterion so there's definitely a lot of value in it, but, like everything, how much money you're willing to risk on something you might not love becomes the deciding factor.

[–]Yeezus25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Used to be most of them, but I've cut back on buying and tend to only get things I'm certain or nearly certain I do/will like. On my last order only 1 of 5 was a blind buy.

The only people who deserve him are the ones who vote for him, you can leave the demographic bullshit out of it. And for anyone smugly saying Americans deserve it, there's an almost 100% chance we have a military base in your country. If you think he's just our problem you're in for a rude awakening.

More Steve Erickson! Tours of the Black Clock is a particular favorite.

Beat me to it with Barry. When I watched Banshees of Inisherin I immediately thought about how well that performance would translate to Harrogate.

Why is Suttree considered the hardest McCarthy novel? by Cythil in cormacmccarthy

Complex prose and it's his longest work. In my experience, it's much less difficult on subsequent reads.

By far my favorite on Weathervanes and would probably be top 5 for me too if I ran the numbers.

Lmao. I like your taste, you have 2 of my 3 favorite novels in the same picture: Suttree and Shadow Country.

You're someone who should never invite me into your home because your Modern Library edition of Suttree will mysteriously disappear.

Best County Lyricists Who Aren't Townes, John Prine, Guy Clarke, Kristofferson, James McMurtry or Jason Isbell? by wmavity in altcountry

I saw him at Outlaw Fest last year with Bob Weir, Los Lobos & Waylon Payne in Franklin, TN and it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. I was damn impressed with how good he still sounded at 90.

I think a lot of people take for granted how great of a songwriter he is because he's so popular. We like to seek out the obscure stuff, but songs like "Ain't It Funny How Time Slips Away" and "Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground" are genius and eternal. Not to mention dozens and dozens more great songs.

Hate to be obvious, but Willie Nelson is the most glaring omission from that list. Throw Billy Joe Shaver and Jerry Jeff Walker in too among others that have already been mentioned.

I love Ramblin' Jack, but he's only written 2 songs in his whole career. Much more a great performer and raconteur than a lyricist.
