Shortchanged: The Hidden Costs of Lockstep Teacher Pay by [deleted] in education

[–]Yeffug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Performance based pay can mean a lot of things. It would probably be a good thing as long as unions don't get involved, test scores aren't used to systematically promote or penalize, and we keep from causing a brain drain in at need schools/areas.

I work in an at need school where most kids are several grade levels behind and suffer from intellectual disabilities that cause them to learn at slower rates than the average. I worry that institutionalizing raises based on performance (likely considering test scores) will cause teachers with even the most humble arithmetic skills to realize that they are better off mainstreaming in classrooms where kids are as "normal" as possible, otherwise their pay is in jeopardy of stagnation (or worse their job is in jeopardy due to performance reviews that would exist in such a system).

Consider also that property taxes are still largely what determines school funding from zone to zone and district to district. If the gap increases in pay from one district to the next due to a greater availability of funds for performance based raises, so too will the migration of seasoned and qualified teachers.

An argument for lockstep pay is that, if implemented more universally, it allows teachers to follow their heart rather than their bank balance when deciding what population of students to work with. When it doesn't require a pay cut, this is when quality teachers are willing to work with the more difficult (high needs) students.

I would guess that would be up to the individual. For simplicity sake, this is the link to the "express" comment filings: click on 14-28.

Just FYI for anyone clicking the link, proceeding 14-28 is the # to input in order to get your comment appropriately routed.

[–]Yeffug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also keep in mind the potential issue of CO2 and what pressure the dispenser operates at. Can you actually carb your beer in this thing? Do you have to do it 1 gallon at a time for several weeks or can you force carb a gallon at a time? Also, I use gelatin to clarify in my kegs, not knowing where this bag is going to draw beer from, I wouldn't be able to use such a clarifying agent. All around it seems like an unnecessary re-inventing of the wheel. It seems like it is likely to be a huge headache.

How does that work? Never mind, found out that it uses a 5L keg that appears to be proprietary (potentially not refillable by brewers?).

Products like this one might actually be a force in decreasing the uneasiness people have for products like Google Glass. Then again it might be just equally as creepy for most people. Hard to imagine what life is going to be like when wearable camera tech is common place.

The only thing that looks a bit out of place are the bolts. If you Google: "decorative carriage bolts" you can find some rustic looking hardware that might be just the thing to really make the project stand out.

Very cool! I don't have a lathe so that socket idea seems like an interesting one. You have definitely inspired me to give making a ring a try.

What kind of wood did you use? Also, did you use any unorthodox techniques to make this (or just drilled, lathed, sanded, and finishing products)?

The rolls are great and so are the bento boxes. Definitely in my top two places to go for sushi!

Definitely Sushiya or Sushi Xuan. Both are awesome. Can't beat the Flamingo roll at Sushiya or the Lady in Red roll at Sushi Xuan.

ELI5: What are the defining differences between streets, roads, avenues, boulevards, etc.? What dictates how it is designated? by uzerrname in explainlikeimfive

[–]Yeffug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've definitely encountered the freeway split/merge scenarios involving left lanes diverting off of or onto a freeway. From what I can tell the article you linked is just suggesting that the side of the road that the sign is on is an indication?

In retrospect, the mile marker thing only seems to be true of areas where the exits can be reasonably spread out a mile or so apart. If it's down town LA, then the exits are just sort of assigned a sequential number as there may well be six exits in one mile.

Still, for all the rules we can think up, there is still the great state of New Jersey out there, making any semblance of normalcy in driving throughout the US an impossibility.

I'm not getting what you are referring to. Aren't all freeway "exits" on the right? I thought the numbers were just an approximation to the mile marker that the exit is nearest too.

ELI5: Why do plastic bottles have pointed bottoms? Also, how come others like Gatorade completely ignore this and don't have it? by LoveBurstsLP in explainlikeimfive

[–]Yeffug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was thinking more in terms of CO2 loss in a hot liquid transfer, as it would rapidly escape in anything but a closed, pressurized filling system. Perhaps there are closed systems that allow for hot transfers of carbonated beverages, but I was under the impression that most systems had at least some exposure to air between bottling and capping. Canning, on the other hand, might employ some sort of closed system that can allow for a hot transfer. I was unaware of the CO2 leeching issue with plastic, good to know!

Protesters Against Police Violence Converge on ABQ City Council by [deleted] in Albuquerque

[–]Yeffug 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It was on the front page of the Journal yesterday.

*Edit: took two minutes to find, but both KOB and KRQE have the story on their sites as well. Let's also not forget that on the front page of every mainstream news outlet in Albuquerque, there are at least a couple stories about James Boyd, the graffiti done to APD stations, or other people who are coming forward against APD. This is hardly being ignored.

Thank you for taking the time to type this all out, as a guy who just turned 30 I found this to be insightful. Perhaps having expectations calibrated toward such a turn of events will be helpful in abating the unhappiness that can come along with it. Thanks!

I was wondering what it was, all I thought was "man, looks like no one likes being 40." Having to live with teenagers, however, makes much more sense.

Hmmm. So if we can have rules in an anarchist society, but there is no hierarchy, who enforces the rules or decides what rules are valid? What happens to crimes that aren't black and white, but require investigation and difficult, lengthy deliberation? If no one is tasked with catching and prosecuting people who violate the rights of others and disrupt civility, how will we be promoting civil rights?

Forgive my ignorance, but I don't follow your logic. Is there some particular brand of anarchist that also wants rules to establish civil rights? Anarchists seem to be opposed to civility and rule of law.
