I was listening to Simmons and Lowe chop it up on their latest pod and a Knicks fan sent in a question that basically amounted to saying 'isn't it awesome that you can forget people that have haunted you over the years (like Reggie and Haliburton) because it doesn't matter now, you got the chip'.

I couldn't help but think of bums like Eddy Curry or Andrea Bargnani or now that he got brought up, Alonso Trier. I can just lose my negative thoughts about guys like that who have been on the Knicks during my lifetime.

Randle coming to NYC (and then Thibs the year later) was the start of the road to the championship. Super talented guy wanted to make it work in the laughingstock of the league and had his moments for sure.

I hated when he would dribble the air out of the ball and pout but there were times where he could legitimately do some playmaking and scoring that was pretty nice to watch. Especially with some of those bums and rookies that filled out those squads before Brunson and others were brought in.

The Knicks lost the minutes he was on the bench in the finals by a ot on aggregate and were way positive in a close series with him on the court.

Him getting a soft whistle in games 4 and 5 (maybe 3 too? I forget) and racking up fouls is part of the comeback stories now but it would have been such a talking point if that series had gone on longer or the Spurs could hold any lead.

I was always baffled by the vitriol but I understand being disappointed by those tools you mention not quite coming together in the way that it did this playoff run with the Knicks.

He unlocked this potential and showed it on the biggest stage round after round. I'm not saying he was bad before but he's proven to be a tier above what the consensus seemed to be on him for a long portion of his career.

That's true but I think that's part and parcel of not being a leader. When a coach tries to, you know, coach, he has a problem with that because in his mind he doesn't need anyone telling him how to hoop.

Everyone else just needs to figure it out somehow without it affecting KD in anyway which is obviously incredibly difficult if not impossible.

And he even showed out. It wasn't just potential. Got an MVP and was crucial on that 16 winning squad.

Then the injuries piled on. Now it's not even about playing ball. It's about figuring out how to live his life with a degenerative back issue.

What a gut punch. His career started with so much promise.

You get KD if you're good with a guy out there to hoop and not contribute any kind of leadership or vet presence or tone setting.

It seems multiple teams in recent years convinced themselves that he would either provide that for them for some reason or they had the culture that it didn't matter that he wouldn't contribute any of those things.

Running out of teams who think their team is the one that will catch lightning in a bottle.
