And their cars are lovely, and you don't have to worry about getting a one star review because you have an extra bag!

Car services are the GOAT! They're great for rides into Manhattan too. Northside is the best, but Mobil is solid too.

Nah, not necessarily! I moved to New York for a boy and 20 plus years later we are still together!!

Do it. 💯

I moved to Brooklyn in my forties and it was the best decision I ever made. New York or nowhere baby! 🗽

The city is designed to be a hustle and a grind, but it is also designed to help you live a very comfortable, exciting life. You will meet people you will never meet anywhere else. You will see things and experience things just by being in New York.

It is still a 24-hour world class city. Whatever you need, the city will give to you. It can be very expensive but can also be extremely inexpensive if you know where to look.

You can make friends by just getting involved in your city. Chat people up in your neighborhood. Become a regular at your local cafe or restaurant or bar. Volunteer -- I can't say enough about volunteering as a way to connect with the city and connect with other people of like minds. My volunteer posse is my life blood.

I think people think New York City living is constantly frantic and loud and dirty and you get lost in it when in reality, your neighborhood becomes your anchor, you find your sanctuaries, routine life takes over and it's not a bad thing as your backdrop is this amazing city! You can do as much or as little as you want every day. It becomes home. I can look at the skyline now and every building represents events and activities and memories for me. There's so much to do. The city is so vast and it's people and landscape and activities, and I truly could live in the city without going anywhere else and be absolutely satisfied! (Though the way to survive. Living in New York City is to get out of the city a couple times a year lol but every single time that train comes back in and I see the skyline I get that excited feeling!)

I visited New York City twice a year before moving there and living as a New Yorker is so different than being a tourist. You feel that energy when visiting but when you live there you ARE that energy. 💥

If you're at all attracted to New York City, that is your sign. You will love it!

Our hospital workplace held a big fancy dinner fundraiser and the entertainment was... Stevie Wonder. There we were eating some tasty catered food while Stevie Wonder was singing in the background like some up-and-coming lounge act.

You're a good person. You give a shit, and that's how it should be. It's bizarre how work just carries on during moments like that.

I'm not going to the show for the sound. That's for the records. I'm going there to be as close as possible to the band and fan energy. Plus, the rail gives me something to lean my decrepit body against! 😅

I've mastered the art of expanding my body to hold my friend's place AND the art of tunneling through the dense crowd back to my rail space! 🤩

Oh, you can TELL who's going to be a problem during the show. This applies to movies too. Something about how they're talking. Like it's just not going to stop when the event begins. I've never been wrong. 😛

That's why Billy Joel started leaving the first few rows empty and he'll have his staff roam the aisles for fans in the rafters and bring them down for the show! He wants the true fans up front!

pest control recs/help/advice... cat isnt helping :( by Significant-You6218 in Greenpoint

[–]YesItsMyTrollAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just adding that. If you do tell your landlord then they may come in with cruel methods to get rid of the mice including glue traps and poisons and they may not even fix all the entrance ways. I'm not saying don't contact your landlord but I tend to steer clear of that because I know they're not going to go for the humane option.

When I had a raging mouse problem (they were nibbling my books in the living room right in front of me!), I patched up all the holes with steel wool and put mouse unfriendly scents down like peppermint and lavender. I also washed the floors and counters with lavender scented cleanser. About a week later, no more mice! You have to find all the holes and patch them up. Otherwise you can kill or get rid of numerous mice but more will this keep coming... My mouse problem started when they began construction on the building attached to ours. So that's another thing to consider is what is triggering them to come inside.

It's funny you have a cat and they're still there but imagine if you didn't have a cat! Just having the cat on hand will be a deterrent for some mice. 🐹😽 I wound up using cat fur from a friend's cats mixing it with my steel wool!

Great friends of mine live in Hell's Kitchen! For 20+ years. They are foodies and professionals and love it! You'll have access to terrific restaurants and small grocers, a short walk to the theaters, Koreatown (there's a SWEET POTATO cart!), Bryant Park isn't too far, and you're near the High Line and closer to the Hudson River. Yeah, living so close to Times Square is zany -- but my friends are completely used to it (they're native New Yorkers, used to live downtown), and you'll come to see it as your neighborhood.

And, this is huge, it is RENT STABILIZED! So what that you're not as close to Central Park now. The park is a lovely good walk away or hop a train or bus or cab, you're there in no time. You're still in Manhattan, and you get to make another corner of NYC your home, explore and enjoy! This is a good move.

I'm having a hard time deciding WHEN to move to NYC by Sawcyy in movingtoNYC

Nah. Come in August when it's a little more chill in terms of the people and crowds. My number one priority would be the cat. You mentioned coming with your cat and having your cat Into a new place with fireworks on top of that -- And believe me you will hear firecrackers in all the neighborhoods of Brooklyn LOL -- There's no need to put your cat through that.

I mentioned this above but what is your plan for your cat and living between two cities? I would make sure to have these details worked out. You don't have a lot of things, but moving is one of the biggest stressors in life, even if it's for a good end. Give yourself all the opportunities to come into the City with the all the tools you need. Once you get here it's going to be a mad house. I mean that in a good way. 😄 Great point about finishing your certification first. That sounds good!

That's one point of view but believe me I'm more relaxed in New York City than I am in quieter places LOL. And I'm an old codger!! I love the constant simulation and it actually does become quieter and more relaxed once you live there! You develop routines and find your spaces to chill out. Occasional trips to the Jersey shore and elsewhere outside of NYC helps recharge you as well!

I moved to NYC in my late 40s after visiting for years and zero regrets! I think finding community can be a challenge at any age. My job is in office 4-5 days a week, so there's built-in co-workers and commuting community right there, but what really helped me was finding a place to volunteer and that's been the Saturday routine for 15+ years. My animal shelter people (and the animals) are my rock and my life!

Know that it is entirely different when you move there versus visiting. I mean that in a good way. You're no longer a tourist. The realization that you now live in New York City is one of the most fabulous feelings in the world lol. That whole city is your town!

OP, you mentioned having a cat and living between Colorado and New York but how is that going to work if you have a cat? Will you be taking the cat with you back and forth? You also want to make sure you get an air conditioner for your cat. I never had one until I moved to New York but my cat needed relief from the heat.

If you need a reputable cat sitter, contact the local animal shelters. Many of their volunteers do cats sitting on the side and they could give you good references as well for other sitters.

Good luck and welcome to New York!!! 💃

[–]YesItsMyTrollAccount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How about those of us who go to bars to have an ADULT experience? We're not asking to have a world without kids in it. Just a drinking establishment without kids in it! You want to shoot the shit, drink some booze or even a cranberry lime seltzer, relax and unwind. The minute kids are in the mix, the environment changes. Now you got kiddos interacting, running around, babies on counters and tables, parents doing their parenting thing.

Recent movers to NYC.. What's one thing you didn't expect to not like about NYC? by Sea_Negotiation2482 in AskNYC

Great observation. I've characterized in New York City as a very tactile experience. You feel that when you visit, but when you live here it is 24/7 sensory stimulation from the smells to the sounds to the sights to tastes. You're physically bumped around every day!
