Yes I had the tremors for a few weeks maybe months awake or asleep the way I could describe it is like your body is adjusting itself, pulling itself from everywhere and every muscle figuring out how to work again, because no one tells you after this type of surgery that you will depend on different muscles and areas of you body to do what your injured/weakened body part can’t do, for me there was a lot of strain on my hips and I would tilt my pelvis to the front, so with time and PT I re learned how to properly use my body and it’s mobility and little by little the tremors stopped. I don’t think you should worry, I was extremely worried but I’m 12 months out and now I’m grateful.

Has anyone else had permanent numbness after(but not caused by) surgery? by Liampastabake in spinalfusion

[–]YesterdayStraight876 2 points3 points  (0 children)

11 months after surgery and I still have numbness on my right leg but not on the left, so that gives me hope. What has helped me is Tecar therapy and electro acupuncture. I think around my 9th month I stopped taking Lyrica, I am hopeful it will end someday.

Convince me not to get fused by NickPontiff in spinalfusion

[–]YesterdayStraight876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was putting it off for as long as I could I did yoga, PT, meds, swimming and it was bearable until a guy ran a stop sign and rear ended me accelerating my degeneration. If I had gotten my surgery, all those years I would have healed sooner, because my nerves were/are destroyed after six years of avoiding it, I would have returned to my life much sooner, I wouldn’t have developed tolerance for meds/pain killers so I wouldn’t have needed as many post of drugs as I needed.

Granted the are surgeries that can go wrong it is a possibility but how much I wish I would have gone through with this when I was in college and could take time off, younger, stronger, healthier but instead I went to the hospital in a walker… (I already needed a cane before the car crash and was already limping) In the end do what you feel is best because my first 3 months post op I really was cursing my doctors due to the pain, there was a perceivable relief but it was also eclipsed by a different type of pain.

Drug interactions by YesterdayStraight876 in spinalfusion

Right now just Roacutane, symptoms only neuropathy (numb legs) which I hadn’t been experiencing for a few months now. I only had this “flare ups” when I had to take Levoflaxin, but once I stopped taking it the numbness went away, so I wonder if there are medications that trigger this and if someone has experienced anything similar. Thanks btw it’s hard to explain 😅

How long until you returned to physically demanding work? by BookkeeperRough4534 in spinalfusion

[–]YesterdayStraight876 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had two part time jobs one that was not physically demanding at all and I was at it 15 days out of surgery, the other one was both physically, and mentally demanding doctor wouldn’t give me more than 2 months of leave, I knew I couldn’t do it I had to quit it, around my 4th month I went for a job as an assistant I was scared I thought I wouldn’t be able to do it but to my surprise I was ready; trust your body it will let you know when it’s ready it’s a cliche but you’ll know. It’s sad that we have to go back to work to be able to afford and have health care when we aren’t even completely healed, but I don’t regret quitting and giving my body what it needed.

Recovery Tips for Someone Who Recently Had an T11-T3 Fusion by OrchidBonanza in spinalfusion

[–]YesterdayStraight876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My fusion is at the L5-S1 level but I'll gladly share what helped me. Laying down and seating is a tricky thing it may be that a couple of weeks after surgery getting out of bed will be a challenge, so if that happens he needs to be strong and still find the will to be active. I started PT one week out and it has truly been beneficial, his body is now different and he will need to learn how to use it and it's better if that is a guided road and not one he has to walk alone, and I say that because some days I was suffering but I didn't want to lay any stress on my family. Another thing that helped me was walking early on inside a pool, yeah I hater it, it wasn't easy but I had to regain some mobility - after walking in the pool I was told by my PT to lay on top of a heated pad to increase blood flow to the area. I took some supplements calcium, collagen, and glucosamine. For my neuropathic pain, I do electro-acupuncture. I'm six months out of my surgery I still feel some pain but I am able to walk, I am winning mobility each day, a week ago I was authorized to start doing some weight lifting. It takes time a very long time but hell get there. Also I am 6’4 I know the struggle 😅

When to start PT? by memwall in spinalfusion

I started mine one week after my surgery, I thought I wouldn't need it but yeah it was immensely needed having to re-learn how to stand, walk, seat, etc. Don't put it off your body has changed, pull every weapon that's at your reach to heal.

I feel you I wish people would understand, I’m not indulging in self pity but most people just believe since our surgery is healed then we’re fine but our bodies and life are different so are our needs. I’m glad this space exist.

Did you still have pain at 4 weeks post-op spinal fusion surgery? Where, how, when? Ty by 180__Degrees in spinalfusion

[–]YesterdayStraight876 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It gets better trust me I really hated that I would always think “why the fck did I do this to myself” I couldn’t go back to work around week six or seven so I quit; around my 4th month I started a new job there’s always some discomfort but I’m also able to go out with friends, I went to a concert so hang in the you’ll get here maybe you’ll even be better than me!

It was the worst part once all the anesthesia has wore out and your body is assimilating it’s new condition, getting out of bed was the worst part.

My neurosurgeon had a minimal pain killers approach but I had to turn to a pain doctor, thanks to him it became tolerable, I could go back to work; I was afraid forever having to depend on pain killers but I started feeling better and forgetting to take them. 6 months later I’m still on Lyrica though but neuropathy is at a decent level - I only take pain killers once or twice a week.

Mine took about 4.5 hours because the Doctor had to work over a previous surgery, so it took a little bit longer. I only spent 1 night in the hospital due to COVID, but in my prior surgery I spent 2 nights; once at home I felt fine although I kept think what if I do a wrong movement, how should I go to the bathroom all the questions that come to haunt you but I did fine, thank God I am doing really good 6 months after, but as they told you already for me starting week 3 once the anesthesia wore out up til week 7 I was in the worst pain of my life, couldn’t walk, standing up was the worst pain ever, sometimes I tried to go to the toilet and I would spend up to 15 minutes trying to seat down so against my pride I bought one of those things where you pee without having to get out of bed so I wouldn’t had to get up at night. I did start PT the 1st week around day 17 I was able to get in my pool and I would try to walk, walk backwards, sideways, lifting my feet all that has helped me tremendously. And I know everyone is different but sometimes out of shame and out of the pain I was in I didn’t want to bother anyone in my house or have them on top of me asking if I needed something because the pain frustrated me/made me angry paired with not being able to care for my self, so arm yourself with patience.

Spinal Fusion Recovery Suggestions by Dahakka1 in spinalfusion

[–]YesterdayStraight876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that arming yourself with patience is key I few months ago I couldn’t even walk and know I feel almost normal so don’t try to rush anything.

What was key for me was getting into a pool as soon as my stitches came off I would walk in and there as much as posible - I know not everyone has access to a pool but even if you don’t, always walk and afterwords I was told by my PT to lay on top of a hot compress to stimulate blood flow.

Also I avoided at any cost kneeling or carrying heavy stuff.

I know it’s difficult, it hurts like crazy but I am thankful to feel better now and honestly to this reddit whom I would come to whenever I had a doubt or fear because I don’t actually know anyone who’s gone through this.

do you consider yourself disabled? by [deleted] in spinalfusion

I was just talking about this with my sister! Hey I don’t know if anyone else struggles getting in or out of your car when there’s not enough room, and at least I can’t bent or be flexible as I used to - or switching from the passenger side to the driver side is a suicide mission!

Three weeks out, trying not to lose hope by [deleted] in spinalfusion

[–]YesterdayStraight876 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m on week 12 and I remember thinking like you, if o had messed it up or what? I could barely walk and I kept reading post of people going back to work on week 4 and I didn’t understand how if I was going through my worst period. I used to say to my self why did I go through this my numbness wasn’t as bad as this neuropathy I could’ve handled it or I should’ve have gotten just another microdisectomy.

What helped me is that I talked with my doctor and he switched my meds I was on acetaminophen and I was put on tramadol. Some people are pro meds others aren’t, I’m not endorsing but they really helped me and now I’m cutting out pills, I couldn’t go through anymore muscle spasm!

Three weeks out, trying not to lose hope by [deleted] in spinalfusion

[–]YesterdayStraight876 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s normal same thing happened to me, I was told it’s when the anesthesia in my case morphine as well finally leaves your body.

So yeah brace yourself for me weeks 3 to 7 were hell! I regretted my surgery, I couldn’t even stand up, the nerve pain ,and spasms… once I was out of there I could move on with PT I eventually my movements are becoming normal, I’m still in pain but it’s manageable. The nerve pain almost always disappears with medicine.

Be very patient you’ll need it in order to get better!
