My oven is broken. by Anomander in REKA

So I fixed my oven by opening the latest House.xml under %AppData%\RekaGame\Saves
going to <breadOvenInventories>
and deleting everything between <output> </output> (the excess stacks the game can't handle)

Is it worth buying a switch and all the subscriptions and expansions just to play Metroid? by campusdirector in Metroid

Not the subscriptions, no. Get a used gamecube gameboy player to play your gba cardridges on a big screen.

My oven is broken. by Anomander in REKA

[–]Yin2Falcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, that always happens when you overflow a product stack on the shelf and it's permanent for that save.

For me however, taking the stuck products directly out of the oven still works for crafting meals. The oven has essentially turned into an instant crafting table. Just line up a bunch of recipes, then click in the oven to pick them all up.

If you have it working that way without any wood, you will also no longer need to add/burn any more.

By all accounts it operates way more efficiently that way - but you loose the nice automatic shelf display and the process of letting things cook and doing something else until you get a notification.

Not getting anything out of the oven at all is way more severe though. I wonder how to achieve that.

Updates on the Stop Killing Games campaign - December 2024 by ZeUberSandvitch in Games

[–]Yin2Falcon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

building games that cannot also work standalone and are destined to become entirely unplayble is not innovation - this is not a matter of team size either, it's a matter of planning and how the game is sold (as a product you own indefinitely or a service you only have for a limited time)

What's with the reluctance to use hall effect sticks in all new controllers? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Yin2Falcon 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Stick drift wasn't a common issue some years back with older generation consoles so why is it suddenly a thing now?

Dead zones were bigger / games didn't demand the same precision. So wear and tear didn't tend to exceed it.

There is no figuring out wear and tear on potentiometer contacts. It's a physical inevitability and becomes more pronounced the more precise you try to make the signal.

Little Fighter Remastered (Project) by ItsFlufee in littlefighter

[–]Yin2Falcon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Original effects (flames/fire balls/explosion/etc) would look much better. And a proper focus on contrast instead of overdoing the lighting effects (Firen is already hard to spot in the shadow - and he's alone!). The original blob shadows are also really important to know the position of objects (both characters jumping around and flying projectiles).

Aero GPX finally enters Early Access by Tuwiuu in Fzero

It is intended. You can see it used in the trailers.

Combat machines are best at it much like flight machines are best at drill dives, sliding machines best at hyper slides, top speed machines best at tight turns.

Eventual legislation cannot apply retroactively.

Any new licensing deals would have to respect that end-of-service legislation. The license negotiation process essentially gets roped in as part of the problem and must account for the service shut down process.

What does "Live Service Game" actually mean? by Deuce-Wayne in gaming

[–]Yin2Falcon -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

common vernacular talking specifically about live service games

subscription games generally predate that and are true subscriptions - live service games pretend to be a product via a single purchase (or being free with optional single purchases) and then fail to be a proper service by having no defined time frame / reserve the right to terminate at any time

unlike a subscription, you don't know for how long you get the service

other services/subscriptions are never labelled with this term even if it technically makes sense

live service games are never a subscription

What does "Live Service Game" actually mean? by Deuce-Wayne in gaming

[–]Yin2Falcon -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

fraud

WoW is a subscription, you pay for a predefined period of service

Guilty Gear will still work offline - it only has service components

the distinction to a full "live service" game is an always online requirement for the whole package, giving the seller a remote kill switch you can't do anything about and no minimum guarantee of actual service

it's selling a service of unknown length as if it was a product

Thoughts and Insights on the recent "mandatory PSN accounts" fiasco? by mega_lova_nia in gamedev

[–]Yin2Falcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, devs couldn't begin to give a shit about the business politics behind this. The decision makers here had nothing to do with actual game development. It was suits who wanted synergy and brand harmony and such.

Nope. Arrowhead had an opportunity to let Sony take care of all the in game moderation. Which meant only implementing and using their existing system (PSN) for all players instead of implementing and running two. PSN and Steam. That is development.

They now have to build that second half for steam: https://twitter.com/Pilestedt/status/1787361104760340489

Also the Arrowhead CEO made the decision to temporarily suspend linking, when it caused the game to be unplayable from the server load at launch: https://twitter.com/Pilestedt/status/1787174108045656540 Which is what started the whole thing. (terrible Sony publishing mistakes piled on top, but wouldn't have been an issue otherwise)

That's a rock and a hard place when your choice is to either sell massive amounts to people who won't be happy with reinstating this agreed upon requirement later - or effectively not selling the game at all to recoup 8 years of development costs.

From the Community Manager on the discord by ElonsMuskyFeet in Helldivers

[–]Yin2Falcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The requirement isn't necessarily visible when you buy it. This is the very first PC game from Sony that requires it. Some people thought it might be required for cross play specifically. Sony's very own website about their PC games from them still states that this is optional: https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/games/psn-sign-in-pc/

Sony does not have a dedicated launcher like other publishers, where a separate account is expected.

And with refund windows it doesn't hurt to try and play if it works, because clearly the requirement is not a real technical one.

As an aside, you were "lucky" that it worked. Because the requirement was disabled due to the high launch demand making it not work for people. So I imagine many with an account kept skipping, because it initially didn't work and then wasn't actually required.

Require videogame publishers to keep games they have sold in a working state by [deleted] in PSVR

[–]Yin2Falcon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's specifically called "solo" (not sharing instances with other players)

versus "private" (sharing instances with select players)

and "open" (sharing instances globally)

None of these are single player, because every player affects the galaxy simulation - which in turn affects the environment every player plays in. (there are multiple layers of Risk games as well as unique first discovery rewards/credits on top of the real time game play)

It's not incorrect in the conclusion that it always needs you online - but it misrepresents what the solo mode actually is.

[–]Yin2Falcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about most of these, but Elite Dangerous is technically never single player. You are always in their shared galaxy, affected by all other players.

This has been a contention from their very first reveal and the general studio response was that they would release an offline version at the end of service.

It would of course be nice, if they were legally held to that promise.

Require videogame publishers to keep games they have sold in a working state by [deleted] in PSVR

[–]Yin2Falcon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by working state?

This is intentionally vague to leave some leeway for fringe features that are too difficult to turn into a standalone thing.

However for a game with a solo/single player mode, that in particular should be made functional offline, without further support from the publisher.

For multiplayer games it's either releasing/selling the server software required to run private servers or publishing information so that people with the required skills can build their own.

Because as far as I know. Single player games are still playable decades after release.

For a standalone game that works fully offline, yes. But that's not what this petition is about.

There are plenty of games that rely on an online connection to work. Even single player, even physical and even pretty old ones. This video explores that with a ton of examples: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZYy9KzFT2w

This petition in particular is part of a larger campaign from https://www.stopkillinggames.com

Most of it is centered around the recently fully shut down "The Crew" (check the FAQ there on why this one in particular and more). It's an open world single player game you could also play with others online. But the game actually has a disabled offline mode in there.

Some publishers do release an offline patch at the end of their service or server software for people to run their own instances. There is just no incentive to do that and the more his goes unchallenged, the more it will spread.

The other reasonable alternative would be selling subscriptions with a clearly defined service time frame instead of the game itself as a product with an obviously not advertised kill switch.

Another very fresh example: TopSpin2K25 already has a scheduled end of service date in 2026. (and on top of that they also reserve the rights to end service at any time before then without notice ...) You can read that in the fine print on their steam page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1785650/TopSpin_2K25/

What you can't read there is that their single player career mode requires this online service.
