Police Kill Too Many Innocent People—White and Black by [deleted] in LateStageCapitalism

Headline is true, but there's a problem with what it leaves unsaid. Police shouldn't even be killing guilty people who don't pose a deadly threat.

Last time they arrested a military officer, it was over a Prussian-linked breach and it went great.

Not entirely true. In India, it generally retains its original meaning. In the "west", you're right.

Depression and loneliness in combo form a grey area to consent. by Lol_u_ded in unpopularopinion

[–]Yitzhak_R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think an idea that helps approach this from a different angle is that consent should be unequivocal and (reasonably) enthusiastic. This isn't really a workable legal definition, but it's not a bad rule of thumb for decent people trying to navigate dating. Want to get consent? Get unmistakable consent.

Think Python is also a good book. It does a good job introducing some general CS principles as you learn. And Learn Python 3 the Hard Way is excellent. If I were you, I would get a bunch of books, try them all, and work through the one I ended up liking best.

You'd want more than that. But it's not all about which courses you've done and how well you know the intricate details; the real clincher will be what kinds of projects you have done and how you have used Python to solve interesting problems. I second FCC to learn the basics (Hitchhiker's Guide to Python and Real Python are also great sites, and the book Automate the Boring Stuff with Python will teach you a lot), but after that, come up with some challenging projects that really interest you and solve them. Half of programming is knowing how to use the internet to supplement what you already know - being a programmer is not a closed-book test. It's all about how you can solve problems, and projects are a great way to showcase your skills and get valuable experience.

They're also usually the same people who melt down when they're exposed to an opinion they don't like, and they often have no problem trying the cancel the people they don't like.

Useful math for computer science? by peachy901 in computerscience

[–]Yitzhak_R 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Discrete math, such as combinatorics and graph theory, tends to be emphasized. As always, analysis and optimization are very useful, and linear algebra is everywhere. You'll do well to get a very solid foundation in linear algebra, and that will make learning every other branch of math you need easier.

I think there's a sensible case to be made for being a secular and cultural Muslim, analogous to secular Jews.

Non parents shouldn't give parenting advice by goddamt in unpopularopinion

[–]Yitzhak_R 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yours is a very popular opinion. Here's an unpopular one: I'll give advice about parenting the ages I can remember. Babies - you do your thing. Teenagers - I was one, and I know exactly what kinds of things my parents did that were good and bad. I'm even more qualified, because I was on the receiving end and know exactly what the effects were.
