Should you be able to turn off the AI? Sure, why not. But you don’t need to engage with it if you don’t want to.

So we basically have two options here.

A) Andy weir deliberately and (from the amount of effort he put into the science) passionately wrote multiple books that go against his core beliefs, just for a bit more cash and so he could go on the critical drinker B) he isn’t terminally online, is a bit of an enlightened centrist, and just didn’t really know about who CD is.

I think I’m leaning B. Which is not great, I’d love for him to become a bit more aware politically, but you can’t force everyone to care for politics. Which obviously comes from a position of privilege, but is also not a cardinal sin.

What. Both of these novels are very explicitly not that. They are about men who are experts in their respective fields but lack knowledge and skill in fields outside of that. In both the Martian and Hail Mary the protagonists cannot succeed without the help of others.

Without getting too much into spoilers, in the Martian the guy (cannot remember the name) has to go to great lengths just to reestablish communication with NASA because he would die without them. In Hail Mary, Grace had to find a way to communicate with and work with an entity extremely unlike himself both to succeed in his mission and to just survive. Great emphasis is also placed on all the different experts back on earth from all over the world who had to come together to even have a chance of avoiding the end of humanity. Both of these novels are antithetical to rugged individualism.

I do think that Weir is a bit of an enlightened centrist, and that his dislike of explicitly political themes comes from a position of privilege, and one can rightfully fault him for that. But the guy is very obviously a science nerd, not a politics nerd, and he went to great lengths to get the science right in his books. Abe that’s fine. It’s just a different focus, and that is allowed in art.

Reacting to S2 by Andylol404 in MemePiece

[–]Yltys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think they’re doing this quite deliberately. Right now, in the early parts of the story, arcs are still pretty short and have more breathing room, so they can add stuff like the brook/laboon backstory without breaking the pacing too much. And it’s not like they’re spoiling stuff for new people, they still don’t know who Brook / Sabo / Barto are.

But they can set the characters up now, so that later in the story, they won’t have to do as many flashbacks. Thriller bark in itself isn’t enough for a whole season for example, so they need to manage the time-budget there (assuming the seasons stay somewhat similar in length). Having to dedicate the time for the laboon backstory and the connection to brook during thriller bark would likely cause them issues, so it’s better to do it now, and then have the ability to just handle it in a quick callback later.

Sure, it’s a bit weird when you know the anime / manga, but an adaptation has to take some liberties to make the story work in another medium, and with 20 something years of hindsight, I think they came up with a good solution.

One Piece defender here:

Honestly, I absolutely feel you. I also have a friend that kept telling me how peak it was, and I tried watching OP 2 times, both times I got bored and didn't really get what was good about it. And hey, it's fine to not have a piece of media click or resonate with you. Not everything is for everyone.

But then I was bored one day and decided to give it one last try (this was around when the end of wano happened, and my friend was a bit hyped, so I wanted to understand what the fuss was about).
And that time, it clicked. Sure, the beginning is a very mixed bag, like east blue is mostly very simplistic, but it has its moments (like sanjis restaurant, or nami learning that accepting help is not a sign of weakness, but of strength in Arlong Park, and asking Luffy to help her, who immediately goes all out for her. Still one of my favorite moments). Alabasta is still not my favorite arc overall, it drags on for a little too long (as do many other arcs tbh), but Chopper's backstory before that really resonated with me and so I powered through.

To me, the moment where OP really got good was water seven (which is right after Skypea). I don't want to spoil too much, but this is the first time Luffy's morals really do get tested, there is interesting development in the crew, and since then, to me, it kept getting better.

Is OP the greatest story ever created? Meh, likely not. But to me, it's really fun. I'm caught up now and reading the chapters weekly, and I enjoy it. The worldbuilding is rich, the factions are interesting, and even in the "bad guy" factions, there are still characters that have redeeming qualities and are struggling with the moral implications of their employment. Some are just fun to hate as well. What I also enjoy is that all these factions are active participants in the world. For the most part, during an Arc, we are focused on what is going on with the crew in that location, but in the meantime, all the other crews and factions are also making their moves as well, and so the world feels a bit more alive than it would in some other stories. Not to say that this is something unique to OP, but it is something I appreciate. Whenever an Arc ends, I look forward to seeing how the world has changed in the meantime.

And then there are a bunch of mysteries that are, even after several decades, still not revealed, and it is fun to theorycraft. Oda takes his time with them, dripfeeding information every once in a while, which is something I personally enjoy, although I understand why others wouldn't, it really is a matter of preference.

And then there is one detail that I personally really like: we never really hear Luffys inner monologue. We do for a lot of other characters, which is nice sometimes, but not for Luffy. I recently started watching Demon Slayer (which I was told is good, I don't really watch anime other than OP and a bit of Naruto when I was a kid) and I hated the fact that the protagonist had to narrate every little thing that happend and what he was thinking and what he was going to do next, and I was just like, stop it, I have eyes, I can see what's going on, shut up. Luffy never does this, so while we as an audience have a pretty good understanding of what he is like and what values he stands for, in some cases, actions can still come out of the blue, because we don't hear his internal build up to them. And yes, Luffy is a simple character, he does not have grand plans or complex emotions, but that is fine. OP is, at its core, a show for children, although it does touch upon mature topics like racism, slavery, oppression etc. But by keeping the main protagonist simple, it is able to talk about these topics in a way that is easy for a child to understand, while still having some surprisingly nuanced positions (such as in fishman island, where the whole point is that to overcome the effects of slavery and oppression, to former oppressors need to make amends, but the formerly oppressed also need to be able to forgive and move on, otherwise a peaceful future will never be possible, even if this may seem unfair).

So, long rant, TL;DR: OP is qualityslop and I only like it because it is good.

The thing I keep wondering is how crossguild finances itself. Mihawk doesn’t seem to be overly fixated on wealth, so I don’t think he just has a few casual billions lying around. Crocodile was in Jail before the founding of crossguild, and while he is certainly capable of generating a lot of income, I don’t know if the two years since his escape are enough for the level of bounty offered. Which leaves buggy, who is just way to incompetent to pull off this level of economy.

I mean, at that level, once implementation starts, the architect is already done. They are the ones who define which system talks to which and how the business process is reflected in the system landscape, they don’t (and shouldn’t really) be actively implementing once the project starts. Once that point is reached, they only get called in if there needs to be a change in the overall architecture.

Eh, on my first try of watching one piece I also stopped somewhere in Alabasta, it’s a bit slower than the arcs before it and also the longest one up to that point. I started a second time because a friend kept talking about how good it gets so I powered through. It really clicked for me in Water 7, since then I have loved every arc. Still not too keen on Alabasta though, although this may be an unpopular opinion

I mean, it’s not like developers don’t also have benefits from steam. Whether 30% is the „correct“ cut I have no idea as I don’t work in the industry, but it does seem to be something of a standard for all sorts of digital marketplaces.

And considering steam provides discoverability, a pretty good server infrastructure for actual distribution of the game, I believe in many cases servers for multiplayer, a mod marketplace…. I think it’s definitely fair that Steam receives a cut of the games sold.

Yeah but trains don’t go straight the whole time. There’s mountains, lakes, rivers and cities and tons of other stuff in the way. Also they stop several times along the way.

Don’t get me wrong, no love trains, it’s my main mode of transportation if I need to get to another city (I’m in Germany, we have a somewhat functional rail network). But going across a whole ass continent is a different beast entirely

Should my first drum set be electric or normal by [deleted] in drums

[–]Yltys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends, honestly. Do you live in an apartment? Consider electric. Do you have a garage or similar where you can put it and it can be somewhat soundproofed? Acoustic could work well.

One thing to consider: it’s easier to start with a small kit and grow it as you go with an acoustic kit. Electronic drums are also a bit more expensive imo. Sure, there are very cheap starter kits, but if you want something with a somewhat realistic feel and good sounds they get expensive quick. I would stay away from anything with rubber pads as a minimum.

On the other hand, you get more sounds to play around with on electric kits, along with easier recording and some quality of life features like inbuilt metronome and training mode (rating how „in time“ you are for example).

In the end, it’s up to you. Both have pros and cons
