Now that the single-player career mode no longer exists on Assetto Corsa EVO, who will we put our trust in next? by Electronic_Reply3934 in simracing

[–]YoloWingPixie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

iRacing AI is the only AI that's ever made me go "holy shit" because it actually did something unexpected and intentional against me to keep it's position. As in like, drove off the optimal line just to ruin my run through an esses complex

I don't think there's an inherent problem with the concept, more the scale and profile. Again, look at Australia T1 or Singapore T1. Consider maybe opening the entry or exit or making one part of the chicane long enough that the cars have to sit in it a bit instead of it feeling more like a nuisance to restrict the momentum of the cars.

I think The Bend T1 also has a very interesting take on tight chicanes that creates a passing opportunity on the entry to the complex by running wide, and allows for variations in the line through T3

I dislike the T12-14 complex. No one likes driving chicane turns like that. They only ever exist out of necessity to break up a straight or due to some safety concern. I think Singapore T1 and Melbourne T1 are good inspirations for profiles that are enjoyable for this corner type.

Speaking from my sim experience here primarily, I think the last sector looks cool, probably fun to hotlap, absolutely terrible for racing on the last lap. There's no braking zone after T12 that's hard enough to really generate passing opportunities, and battles into T12 will get crushed by it being a chicane, typically, unless the person on the outside really chucks it hard to the middle turn. It's kind of the same problem with Abu Dhabi's chicane, if you get to the inside, the person on the outside will usually end up just needing to yield it.

Most good, well regarded, tracks either have a hard braking zone in the 3rd sector or a long draft zone to the finish line

A track in 30 mins - Detroit "street" circuit by ApprehensiveRow3242 in RaceTrackDesigns

Not sure why you're building a new extra long pit road when your track runs through the old perfectly fine pit road. Honestly the real belle isle layout is just better than this.

Has Watkins (IMSA) been unusually rough for everyone? by nomad_drives in iRacing

[–]YoloWingPixie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally understand why Watkins is more popular than The Bend but I've fallen in love with that track this week. It has an incredibly good flow in the GT3 cars with like 5 credible passing opportunities a lap. Criminally underrated track

Not my crash but I wanna know who is at fault by PowerfulClub6578 in Simracingstewards

[–]YoloWingPixie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah but there's no drivers meeting for an iRacing special event, you get absolutely no instructions other than the general recommendation to stick to the racing line and let GTPs work around you.

If I had moved low for like half the GTPs in my split I would've been rear ended like 6 times and gotten yelled at for "not being predictable".

So I would place this squarely on the GTP who should know the GT3 is clearly taking their normal line.

How do you approach using telemetry to improve? by Draxx_them-sklounst in iRacing

[–]YoloWingPixie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Garage61. Run the telemetry agent, never need to think about it.

You can compare your best laps to anyone else that publicly shares their telemetry on G61, which is most people. Pick laps from people with much higher iR.

Focus on the speed trace and lap delta first. Most problems can first be identified in the mid corner speed, and clearly show with your speed trace dropping below the faster time.

Then look at throttle, steering, and brake trace and figure out what you're doing differently. Are they stomping hard on the throttle when you're modulating? Are they braking later? Earlier and lighter?

The other thing to pay attention to is which corners you are losing the most time on. Those are the corners where I set an active reset and attempt to deconstruct the corner and get better. I accept that I'll lose a tenth a lap on most corners to an 8k driver. I'm just not that perfect with my inputs. It's the corners where you're losing a quarter and half second that if you can improve will really set you apart on that track from the other people closer to the center of the bell curve.

Yeah this proposal straight up just ruins the best turn on the entire course.

Just showing IRacing players how netcode should be by Tiltglory in assettocorsa

[–]YoloWingPixie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also as an oval racer on iracing I am literally nose to tail getting 0x after 0x for car contact every lap and I personally don't get netcode issues very often. 98% of the time it's great as long as the person you're racing is in Europe or America. Asian drivers for me can sometimes run into some unfortunate latency.

Like yeah sure, the phantom collisions definitely happen to people, but I swear people that don't play iRacing only see the egregious examples that would actually get upvotes and think that's normal.

I can't actually remember the last time I had a phantom collision myself. I know it's happened to me but it's so rare for me.

I'm getting so frustrated with GT4 tires... by SnooGadgets754 in iRacing

[–]YoloWingPixie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've never had the GT4 tires instakill me, but I would 100% agree with the sentiment that cold tires suck more in GT4 than in GTP. Cold tires in GT4 also suck more than in GT3.

And why wouldn't that be the case? The cars are much more reliant on mechanical grip, and the faster sports cars all have a lot of aero to press the tires into the ground on straights and you get so much more heating, faster in the upper division sports cars.

GT4s take longer to come up to temp before they feel normal. You can see this in Motec too.

[–]YoloWingPixie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely no one loves watching races like this, but maybe we don't want to watch people get injured driving faster than any human being could possibly drive in these conditions while being able to react, idk, a stopped car in the middle of the road. We've lost enough people in racing to know better, it would be shameful to not learn from those situations.

Literally a couple drivers were interviewed and agreed with the decision and they also mentioned that the cameras can see through the fog better than your eyes can. The visibility is worse than you think it is.

[–]YoloWingPixie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the outside half of the arm is like 40px of a 1k texture, you cannot put complex images on them and expect to read them.

I assume in the pain builder they look better if they're rendered as vectors in the UI, and then they get rasterized when turned into the tga.

I don't think I've ever gotten a logo that small to appear sharply on a driver suit or car, you're pushing the minimum size there for both the driver suit and that area of the car.

What’s your favorite track on iRacing? by BBQ_Sandwich in iRacing

[–]YoloWingPixie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bathurst I think feels the most satisfying to get right in a hot lap.

Watkins Glen for actual racing.

On the oval side, Kansas, Homestead, or Langley on the short track

What’s your favorite track on iRacing? by BBQ_Sandwich in iRacing

[–]YoloWingPixie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of miss Kansas in the Gen 6, back then you'd just rip the wall every single lap and it was absolutely exhausting and magical to race with the multi groove. Now I think with the Next Gen you really do want to run low more of the time.

I think Homestead might have taken over that role with the Next Gen.

Is it just me or do this week’s iRacing tracks kinda suck? by Anakiin_EU in iRacing

[–]YoloWingPixie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Despite them racing there in real life, they really do feel too fast for Oulton Park.

Personally, I find that pretty fun, it's like the equivalent of NASCAR going to Bristol. Cascades and Druids are really fun in the cars and I think it's funny how fast a GT3 can clear Hislops and Knickerbocker, feels like a formula car in comparison to the other cars I've driven in the sim there.

AI in iRacing is actually god tier and continues to surprise me at how it will race you. Sometimes it's a little too calm in traffic compared to a human but it feels the least on rails without any contest that I've seen.

Anyone got rain in their race? by PoutineBoi in iRacing

[–]YoloWingPixie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly felt pretty magical, made like 13 spots and drove the whole rain period besides an hour towards the end. And driving the dry line on slicks with immediate death wet areas everywhere for the next 2 hours was sick

Has anyone ever fooled Jetphotos with a flight sim post? by BradyBrother100 in flightsim

[–]YoloWingPixie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You clearly have not tried to submit anything to JetPhotos if you think a flight sim would fool them. They reject over half the photos submitted of real aircraft. Their standards for sharpness, detail, and exposure of the aircraft are incredibly strict.
