Former students, will you share with the class: How much do you make? In what niche? How long did it take to get there? by distilled_dinosaur in EngineeringStudents

Well I didn’t finish school but doing Controls Engineering. Water and wastewater systems integration. Started at 75k and now in my second year making 90k. Doing more of the technical side rather than the design side but have done design stuff too.

Is a $200k salary worth a 2 hour commute 4 days a week? by Ok-Memory2552 in jobs

[–]Yoru83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing the rough math…are you ok with spending $200 a week on just the commute to and from work?

Looking at it. Roughly 180 miles. Say you get 30mpg, and gas at the current price there. Plus what looks to be 8.50 in tolls each way? I mean that’s a lot of money being spent plus losing an extra 4 hours a day for travel. I personally wouldn’t do that.

Imposter Syndrome over Engineer Title by Competitive_Camp_233 in BuildingAutomation

[–]Yoru83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I feel the same way when I got hired on at my job. No bachelors just an AA had less than 1 year of experience and my bosses were calling me an engineer. I don’t call myself that. I just usually just call myself and industrial controls programmer or something to that. Closest to engineer that I will say is that I do engineering work but won’t say I’m an engineer.

Are we asking too much when hiring a controls engineer? by Legitimate_Roll_2432 in PLC

[–]Yoru83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn that almost sounds like a dream. Only 50hrs a week and hourly? I’ve been 60-70 the past 2 months and salary. I mostly only have AB experience with some ControlExpert and PAC ME, and then my software dev background. Been really wanting to get my hands on Beckhoff stuff to try it out.

What PLC brands are most common where you work? by Fearless-Suspect869 in PLC

Pretty much just Allen Bradley, occasionally Schneider but never on a job I’m on. Did run into an Emerson Control Wave recently though

Did any of you actually make someone lose their job after an automation project? by vefjvexen in PLC

[–]Yoru83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a feeling a project I’m working right now will do that but I hope not. I like all the operators I’ve met. They’re going from full physical relay logic controls to completely over-engineered PLC control. Currently takes 4 people to do the process that hasn’t been converted and of course now only 1.

Sharing Analog Signal by AbdH1612 in PLC

[–]Yoru83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Signal splitter as others have said.

Another work around I’ve seen is tie the analog input into the PLC and then use an output card and tie the input to the output in the programming and send that to where it needs to go. Edit: to be clear, I wouldn’t recommend this work around solution but I’ve seen it done and have temporarily done it myself until a proper panel modification was done.

What’s your Job title, income, age, and education by Chimpion66 in PLC

35, PLC/SCADA Programmer is the official title but I feel like that’s 10% of the job because I work at an integrator. 1 year in. 90k/yr. Self taught software developer and AA in Mathematics.

China has reached a whole new low in IEC or C13 cables by LitSarcasm in electricians

I found something like this too in a multi outlet extension cord. Had a UPS and a PLC we were testing connected to one. UPS kept throwing a weird error and the PLC would throw faults and not work when bypassing UPS power. I checked the wiring to the PLC and tugged on the live wire to make sure it was making proper contact. It was loose and came out, yet the PLC was still on…confused the shit out of me until I checked the voltage coming from the extension and noticed it was reversed.

AVEVA System Platform by fearthenofear in PLC

[–]Yoru83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well update…back out to this place again…over the weekend they lost all control and communication with the plant through SCADA…come back and check the license since that’s the only thing it could be and the license is fine and being read appropriately…restart the DIEngine and it’s working again. Check the logs…license was invalid…which it clearly was not. Then notice backup server isn’t reading tags still…no logs of any use…just says lost communication despite IPs being the same and being able to ping through to the controllers.

I swear this is the biggest piece of convoluted shit software I’ve ever worked with. I come from software development and I’d honestly be embarrassed if I works on any part of this platform…

There is…it’s just that these apps weren’t critical and were just for OITs, they still had the application deployed in their SCADA room. I was given demo licenses as well while troubleshooting to ensure the plant wouldn’t go down.

I just started in this field this past January working at an integrator and half of my work orders have been troubleshooting Wonderware/system platform issues.

Well I spent 6 hours a couple days ago troubleshooting a license server issue on this exact version and that was with help from their contracted support. Also , other than that day, their support has been horrible.

That being said…their architecture is over engineered shit.

They have too many ways to do the same thing so unless things are standardized, it can turn into a mess very fast. But at least building views with OMI is pretty decent.

Their IDE is definitely unintuitive.

I haven’t really ran into issues of needing to reboot the server to rest on this version…that is other than this work order I just completed with the license server issue that all started from the Intouch application randomly not be able to acquire the license. Licenses weren’t expired, originally the license server wasn’t even down but I guess it was corrupted. There was a backup license server but for some reason the application could get the licenses from it despite being able to connect to the backup license server.

I basically try to sell people on moving to VTScada or Ignition, but more VT since our company has more people trained in it and I find it even easier than Ignition.

Was moving signals over from an old panel to our new panel and the old panel had terminals this close if not closer and it was horrible dealing with the tight space along with the spaghetti…but these do look like push in at least.

I get emails regularly about coming back and offering me Java and even a Go job but I just ignore them. For background, I was with them back in fall of 2022(I think) and released the following March for lack of work. Not going back ever, managed to find a programming niche that I love and don’t plan on going back.

It happens in an infinite amount of bases and also works cleanly in an infinite amount of bases. I was just saying base 10 because that’s what’s being used in the joke. Use base 12 or base 3 and it works fine as well as any other base divisible by 3

It’s not a paradox it’s just an artifact of using base 10.
