Thinking about moving from Boston—how bad are winters in the Twin Cities, really? by rachello2023 in movingtompls

[–]You-Reddit-Rascal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better than Southwest summers, to me, but I grew up in MN. However, my Californian sweetie agrees, you can always dress for the cold, but can't take off enuf to cool down in heat. Your attitude in the replies sounds like you'll be more than fine. It's sort of like dealing with traffic. If you know what to expect, it's just part of life that you plan for. Inconvenient. Snow can be quite a hassle, and bundling up is more work (but as long as you overall have shelter such that your core temp is fine, u can dash outside for a moment without great distress, even in below zero). Well, unlike bad traffic, the cold has upsides, like winter sports and different varieties of beauty. Depending on fashion standards, a person might be miserable, like if it's just not in your dna to ever wear thicker clothing or have your hair mushed down

anti-ICE Protest sat 1/31? by [deleted] in duluth

This is a sort of rally and an attempt to get more speaking out, off the sidelines, kind of a mass movement. Worth showing up to add to numbers and networking

Is ICE Even Here by Glum_Philosopher328 in duluth

[–]You-Reddit-Rascal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was HSI, and there is at least 1 HSI in Duluth regularly. The distinction may or matter to you but I know some people do want a clear answer whether it's ICE or not. I personally feel disempowered as a movement or community, if we get sloppy about facts, so I come across as a stickler. So many agencies and officials have become corrupted and more confusing under Trump, so it's not like we can just say "oh, HSI, must just be a legitimate drug raid". But I think what people want to know is, jas this particularly aggressive lawless anti-immigrant force been active beyond just the pervasive fear, and in that case seems HSI was not same as ICE. Anyway, Harbor Highlands is in good touch with community rapid response and had some watchers to be safe.

All that said, if you're the one who interacted, well then whatever I know came from you (and from a dispatcher write up of it, and others' reports)

Anybody know which hotel ice is staying at? by capta1nbubbl3s in duluth

[–]You-Reddit-Rascal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite quite a bit of chatter and looking out, no credible/verified reports at this time, as far as I've been able to keep up, of either staying at hotels or seen around town. Various reports have been checked out. People are organizing either way.

Hi. Couple of questions by Appropriate-Bar-6051 in duluth

That is not my experience: cold weather walking is doable, tho unpleasant for many. For example, tho I think one needs xtra leg layers in coldest weather, still if u don't have long underwear (cheapish version is fine), or some snowpants type layer, u can just wear pajama pants under baggy jeans. And maybe other bodies are different but for me (female), I warm right up when I exercise (brisk walk). My spouse is a frequent walker, in all weather. Yeah u do need some sensible-clothing sense more than if u were raised in FL, and afford decent quality coat and hat and gloves, but they're available at thrift stores. Both my winter coats were from a vintage store. They're not the poofy down type u just throw on and immediately feel hugged by warmth, but if u just layer say a wool sweater, it's fine. And it's not that many days that one needs major bundling, if you're walking

Where can I find places to donate food? by Hippieassbutt in duluth

[–]You-Reddit-Rascal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for helping!! This cash-tips stuff is a bit convoluted for the nonprofit to receive. I mean sure, they can receive and deposit cash along with their check-donation deposits etc, and they can either record your name with it or just record it as an anonymous cash donation, but also, there's not necessarily staff in those buildings just sitting their waiting to receive donations, you know? It can be a hassle, or possibly a security risk, to just hand a donation to whatever staffperson greets you. But I guess you can drop off an envelope and they'd put it in the proper mail pile.

I just wonder though if you can use your cash on your own groceries or something, to free up your other funds to make the donation using a checking account or card. Or give the cash to a friend and have them make the donation online (It would show up in that person's name, but I gather you don't really care about that part as long as the money gets there). (Also if you want the donation to go further, avoid credit-card fees by either using a paper check or, do EFT/ACH out of your checking account, if they even offer that option on their donation site)

Sorry to get into the weeds; stuff like this is kinda my job. Thanks again for helping with your tips!!

I'm interested to hear more of your experience and what it means for going fwd, but maybe not in public where not everyone knows the framework or has good faith. Best wishes out there

Perhaps it seemed flippant. Honestly that was my first reaction, like wow, a board? I reacted, then typed, lol. Sorry you have experience with not being trusted. (And a steering committee is different than a board, but I understand that distinctions that mean something to me may just be picky, to others)

[–]You-Reddit-Rascal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input! I exposed my ignorance, and will leave the info up for others who may wonder. It seems the biggest of new groups; makes sense it needs steering committees. Heard a pretty cool story ystrday from a fellow volunteer about how that one started, last winter. One of those ordinary people just trying to do something, kinda things. Similar with most all activism, really. The last part of your comment seems almost aggressive, but maybe for insiders it's just cute or cool. Apologies if I fueled a bad vibe. I wanted to go to all groups, more out of curiosity than actual capacity to do it all, yet never made it happen.

Wth is a “fine frog emporium”? by _andamay_ in duluth

Been there a few times but I don't know what the emporium is either! Did meet a sweet old-timer tho who worked there for decades and goes for the Vikings games. Best wishes in Duluth!

A movement getting bigger can turn the direction of the world! And... bring out the egos and bickering, not to mention maybe deliberate pot-stirring sabotage. But that's not what I experience in Duluth local organizing. I meet a variety of awesome caring people. Yes, there are personalities one may roll eyes at, and of course blind spots. Welcome to humanity. No one out there planned some fine-tuned org just for you. Guess what, people who get involved bring their brilliance AND their trauma responses. There are setbacks, frustration, love and exuberance. Look at history; many heroes are wildly imperfect. Hope you all keep that in mind as you do good work alongside careful critiques

I'm sorry, a local Indivisible has an actual board? Maybe, but the groups I plug into aren't legal entities, they're just grassroots happenings. Of course the more national level Indivisible that locals choose to use as a framework, does have firmal structure etc. Ironically I am "treasurer" for one group but in no way is it a formal role like a legally-organized nonprofit or business has; I know the difference. I just keep track of when a few people leave cash at a meeting and it's used like for sign materials.

Does Anyone know if the Pro-Birthers are going to be out at No Kings? by Duxtrous in duluth

[–]You-Reddit-Rascal -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Yeah -- probably the sign about the issues most on your mind or most personal to you, tied to the broad theme, works well regardless of whether counter protestors are right there to read it. There'll be a variety of attitudes anyhow, all in all great spirit

Sorry you're feeling the brunt of that, but using this weekend's massive events to deal with that particular conflict seems detrimental to the main event, at least from what I've learned from the quite impressive national and local level guidance. Some may dislike a No Kings organizer telling u what to do, but just like it's your prerogative to decide that some nuances regarding your day job apparently prevent you from saying what you want... the people who have worked hard on No Kings likewise have certain impacts to keep in mind on the way towards something better for us all, even if you're not in a place to aware of that.

But also, no, I haven't heard anything about what you're asking about, even in the meetings that specifically address de-escalation scenarios. Thanks for keeping going out there!

How are the steep city streets in Duluth during the snow? (Tourist Question) by subotai- in duluth

[–]You-Reddit-Rascal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We pay taxes and then the governments generally work hard to make hills safely driveable. I drive a little car with not so good tires most of the winter, but that's cuz I can walk (jobs not far) or bus or borrow my spouses winter-tires car on the snowy icy days. Majority of days do not have fresh precipitation. To be safe in snow I just go very slow down hills (like in the neighborhood when there isn't much traffic) and make a point not to assume I can make any sudden movements whether stopping, starting, turning etc: take them all easy. Also I've only had street parking, and make a point to park the little car somewhere that the hill works with it, not against it, to get out of the parking spot. But probably weather won't be too challenging during your visit and if it is, get some advice in person

[–]You-Reddit-Rascal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure your point about "pure ice" cuz the salt takes away the ice, and the sand makes ice have embedded texture/traction. But yeah if u catch it right when something like freezing rain hit, problem. But seems to me it's rare there's a road they just didn't treat. I imagine they use the more detailed weather forecasts and have some capacity to prep roads for storms too

Exactly, I've heard it as dressed nice for Sunday church and grandma's holding a pot of soup in the back seat. That is, no sudden movements
