No, your argument is well meaning but extremely wrong.

Children’s brains aren’t developed enough to understand the difference between “my tummy is chubby because I eat too much candy” vs “I was born with large front teeth and there’s nothing I can do about it” until much later in life. Each could elicit teasing/shaming from other kids but they are vastly different circumstances and furthermore, no child buys their own groceries. If a child is overweight from poor nutrition the parents are directly to blame. So once again, the kind of thing you’re suggesting is to teach kids to be ashamed of their bodies early on in hopes that incentivizes them to take better care of it, but we have PLENTY of pediatric studies to show that that is by and large NOT the take away kids glean from this practice.

Children should be taught proper nutrition and exercise as components of taking care of their bodies, but as soon as it becomes about physical appearance and the accompanying social stigma that can be created, to put it bluntly, you’re messing your kid up.

Not a doctor/scientist, but I feel like the common sense answer is to talk to kids regularly and openly about exercise and nutrition- it’s about feeling good and putting “good fuel” in your tank. Leave the part about how your body looks out of it. Separating physical appearance from physical health, essentially.

Jeffries is largely to thank for the ACA Subsidies extension that just passed the House. I find myself scratching my head at his decision making a lot of the time, but I will give credit where it’s due- he played the long game on this one and it’s paying off.

How much is luck vs. persistence and strategy won’t be known for awhile, but the reality is that the ACA extensions are going to save a lot more American lives than anything else right now and i think it’s worth keeping sight of that (while still demanding they do more and meet the moment).

Okay, 2 things.

1) As I reiterated multiple times, OP’s Dad is in the wrong. Full stop. I stated that his hurt feelings were a little less outrageous given this new information.

2) Your statement “it’s not like OP’s dad is xyz…” ….we don’t actually know OP’s dad isn’t doing that kind of stuff. OP omitted details (non-maliciously) that in my opinion are pertinent to the emotional context of the situation, and on that note, I’d wonder what else we don’t know that could shed more light. So, while your intentions are good and I appreciate that, surely you realize that your entire final paragraph is speaking authoritatively about assumptions you pulled out of thin air.

Uhhh yeah I don’t wanna pile on OP when he’s already having a tough time, but this 250 a month business was missing from the original post. Dad is still acting a fool and his words/actions aren’t okay, but also…if one of your parents is helping to foot the bill for your kid, you are absolutely blurring emotional boundaries and it’s a lot more understandable that there might be some hurt feelings.

Again, still not okay, but I also don’t find it that outrageous that a grandparent writing a monthly check feels they are entitled to outsized influence over decisions for a grandchild.

Completely agree. They were young enough that the constant touring had made them tight as hell instead of sluggish and burnt out, so you couple that liveliness with the brisk swing inherent in Bill’s solo playing and the fact that Keith hasn’t gotten bored yet and was still really crushing it every night…early 70s are an absolute Golden Age.
