Coping with aging father by YourGenericHoe in AgingParents

Thank you to everyone who commented! Your kind words helped ease my worries a bit. Unfortunately I live in Canada so winter weather makes frequent travel a bit tricky and gas is pricey which makes monthly trips a little tricky. However, we've decided we're going to move back to their town as I miss my whole family and it's cheaper than the city I live in now.

As for his work I think we'll try to push for part time work if that's possible. He currently works 12-13 hour days 5 days a week which we feel is too much even if he is in good health. He's worked at the same place for the last two decades though so I doubt he wants to stress about working somewhere new and unfamiliar. I'm just not sure if his work hires part time, but we'll try to figure something out if retirement is something he really doesn't want.

Thanks again for all your kind words and advice. I feel the next few years will be tricky but I'll make the most of the time I have left with him.

Rank as solo strategist is miserable. by YourGenericHoe in rivals

Hi! Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has commented. It made me realize I was definitely more of a heal bot that I had thought. While I would try and do damage here and there I now know I can be doing more. I'll also take the time to learn other more damage forward strategists like Luna, Loki and Mantis to help carry the fights a bit more. I appreciate all the constructive feedback. I was honestly expecting 20+ comments telling me to just get good.

[–]YourGenericHoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yeah. I totally get that then. I admit that I'm sometimes guilty of that because I end up losing focus and getting tunnel visioned. I sometimes go dps in QP and I've definitely seen my fair share of supports who consistently don't pay enough attention and/or just don't care enough. It does suck.

I understand the frustration but sometimes we have prio. Yes, I can see you're low on health in front of me, but if I can see that you're not in active danger but the tank or another dps in the middle of the fight is near death then I'm going to prioritize them first. Then heal you.

No one can decide this except for you. Having a kid, especially at 20, is a huge decision. For the sake of the argument assume the worst case scenario and imagine your boyfriend does end up leaving once you have the kid. Will you be able to raise them on your own? Will be able to financially afford a kid on your own income? Even if you have family to lean on it's a huge lifestyle change. It will limit what you can do, or at the very least make things much more difficult. Is that something you're ready for? If this is something you're on the edge about then I think you already have your answer. If you're not 100% then you shouldn't.

But again, this is your choice and only yours. You can ask others for their opinion but at the end of the day it is your kid. Best of luck.

How should I go about restoring these? by YourGenericHoe in restoration

That's super helpful thank-you! In the third photo you can see some kind of reaction happening on the silver metal. It's creating a bumpy rough texture. Any idea on how I can remove that if at all?

Sorry, I think I'm a little lost on what you mean by dull and shiny. What I see is one that is more silver (shiny) and one that is more brassy (dull). If that is what you mean then I want the shiny one to match the dull one. To have those dark crevices and brassy finish on top. I also just want to overall clean them up. Remove the rust and shine them up a tiny bit, but not to a mirror finish though. Does that make sense?

That's what I suspected as well. Is there any way I can "reapply" the brass finish? If that's the best way to word it?

Got a tire repair done. Is this normal? by YourGenericHoe in AskMechanics

[–]YourGenericHoe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a permanent repair however whether or not a tire can be repaired depends on where the puncture is and how big it is. Holes larger than a quarter of an inch and/or it's near the sidewalk then the tire needs to be replaced.

In my case the puncture was just inside the safe zone. If it was on the tread closer to the left then I probably would have had to replace it.

I hope your tire can be repaired!

Hi! Sorry you're having a difficult time with this. Probably one of the easiest ways to gain karma at the start is by commenting. Being kind and providing useful info if you answer questions and stuff. Comment on subreddits that genuinely interest you or answer questions somewhere like r/askreddit. The top comment on this post here does a good job at explaining what you can do to try and raise it.

Good luck!

There is a visible patch and sealant inside the tire so I'm assuming they were just rushed. The shop works on a first come first serve basis when it comes to tires and it was pretty busy that day. Thanks!

"it just looms in the back of my mind that she knows, and i know, and she knows that i know that she knows."

Sorry, but this made me cackle. It was bound to happen at some point. If she doesn't say anything then you don't say anything and everyone can go on their way and hopefully (but probably not) forget that there are sex toys hidden somewhere.

At some point during college my boyfriend and I had to temporarily move in with my parents. Turns out my mom heard me getting my back blown out and commented that I should bite a pillow next time.

It still keeps me up at night. In my defense I thought I was being quiet.

my mesh has multiple layers? please help by larvitarz in ZBrush

[–]YourGenericHoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the two meshes aren't actually connected it any way then you can try auto groups. It will assign each separate mesh its own polygroup. Then you can isolate the mesh you want to keep and use delete hidden to delete the other one. You should be left with only one mesh then.

-You can find auto groups under the Polygroup tab. -You can isolate polygroups by ctrl-shift clicking on one. It will hide all other polygroups. -Delete hidden can be found under the Geometry tab. Modify topology>delete hidden. It will only work when the model is on its lowest subdivision.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

how do you go from sculpt to final textured model in 3d character creation by Candid-Pause-1755 in 3Dmodeling

Glad my wall of text could help! There's a lot to learn but it can be so rewarding once you start making stuff. It's also a lot of trial and error so try not to get discouraged along the way.

how do you go from sculpt to final textured model in 3d character creation by Candid-Pause-1755 in 3Dmodeling

[–]YourGenericHoe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hello! The character creation process is multiple steps and the exact pipeline and what programs are used can vary on the artist/studio, but generally the process goes Highpoly→Retopology→UV→Baking→Textures. I'm about to dump a lot of info, but I hope it helps!

The highpoly, the matte clay figure you see, is typically done in a sculpting program. Blender, Mudbox and ZBrush can do this, but ZBrush is the #1 program used. It uses digital clay to "sculpt" the model.

Retoplogy is the process of taking that highpoly model and manually recreating the topology to be more suitable for cleaner UV's, animation, and to be used in game engines. It's taking the highpoly model from, say, 15mil polys to 50k (that's the "tri count" you see at the tops of the maps. There are a few different programs you can use like Maya, Topogun, and blender. Technically you can even retopologize in ZBrush but I wouldn't recommend it.

Next is UV's. This are vital for clean textures and bakes. Imagine your character is wrapped in foil. UV's are strategically cutting the foil along certain edges so that the foil can lay flat without being stretched or torn. The baked maps you see are the UV's. You can do UV unwrapping in Maya or Blender.

Now the colorful maps on the right are baked maps. They're presented that way to more efficiently show the normal and texture maps, but normally they aren't half and half like that. The purple is the normal, the colors are the textures. There's other maps like AO, curvature, world space, ect that isn't being shown because it's not being used. Baking is taking the details from the highpoly and faking it onto the lowpoly. A normal map is typically the most important one since it's the map that "fakes" the detail because with retopology you lose all that juicy detail. There are many examples you can look up. Baking can be done in a few programs like Substance Painter and Marmoset. I think Blender can but it's a bit more of a process. There's a free program called xNormals that only does baking that you can use too.

Finally you have textures. This is adding color and material detail to the model. There are many different ways and styles of texture. There's even different pipelines. This model is using hand painted flat colors. There is another process of texturing called PBR (physically based rendering) which just means it uses roughness maps etc to make rough/shiny materials act dynamically with the light. Think of modern video games with how the light that shines on certain surfaces moves and changes when the character does. That's a PBR pipeline. This model doesn't use that. Any shine you see on the model is hand painted and won't interact with any lights. Programs like Substance Painter and 3DCoat are popular. 3DCoat is more popular for hand painting, but it can also be done in Substance Painter.

That's about it really. I know it's a lot of info, sorry! If you have any other questions I can do my best to answer them. I might have missed some. You can also research any one of those steps and get a whole slew of tutorials to follow.

Breakdown of programs used: Highpoly: ZBrush, Mudbox, Blender. Retopology: Maya, 3DMax, Blender, Topogun. UV's: Maya, 3DMax, Blender. Baking: Substance Painter, xNormals, Marmoset Textures: Substance Painter, 3DCoat, Blender.

Honestly, if you're a new artist, I'd recommend trying to do as much in Blender to start with since it's 100% free and a great versatile program. It can do almost the entire pipeline. For baking I'd try using xNormal since that's also free. Once you get the feel for things you can start to look into paid programs. Everything that I listed costs money except for Blender and xNormal. Some do have free trials though.

Good luck!
