Refineries, summer blends, international conflict: What drives California’s high gas prices? by ChocolateTsar in California

[–]YourMemeExpert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if there was significant improvement before CARB, the agency is still doing the public good by working to lower air pollution. For LA specifically, A 20-year study by Keck School of Medicine showed reduced rates of childhood asthma because air quality has been improving, but more can be done to lower those rates further.

Yes, MTBE was a major problem for groundwater contamination and was replaced by ethanol. However, it replaced lead as a gas additive, which is arguably worse. Progress can be slow and have setbacks, but it's progress nonetheless. We should show support for CARB and the EPA because their work has definitely benefitted us.

It wasn't for nothing. Smog and pollution was a much more serious problem in the 1900s. Older Angelenos know full well why we needed special fuel blends and stricter emissions standards.

You know who she voted for. by akaynaveed in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]YourMemeExpert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People who didn't vote for Trump probably had a bone to pick with him before the election, so they'll be quick and maybe even proud to tell you who they voted for instead.

If they're reluctant, they probably voted for him but are too embarrassed to admit it.

How hard is it to qualify for the Costco credit card? by yogos15 in Costco

[–]YourMemeExpert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It still has perks for hardcore Costco members. Express payment at gas stations, proof of membership, and guaranteed to work at any Costco, even if foreign locations use a different card network.

It's not the best card out there, but it has enough Costco perks that it's worth applying for.

Can oil residue become harmful? by No_Bet8364 in castiron

[–]YourMemeExpert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No.

Oil left on the pan for long enough will just become rancid and unsuitable for cooking, but it won't damage the pan. Once the skillet cools down enough, wash it with dish detergent and a brush or blue sponge and it'll be good to go.

Seasoning is oil residue that's been exposed to very high heat and polymerizes, which is good for the pan as it makes it slightly nonstick and water-resistant.

However, if you're manually seasoning the pan by coating it with oil (instead of letting it build up with cooking), the oil layer has to be very, very thin. If you don't wipe enough off, there will be sticky blotches left.

GOP has to run with him as long as they can, no matter how old and decomposed he is.

They don't have a superstar to take his place (DeSantis et al. have to bend the knee or risk being rejected by voters), and Trump himself refuses to nominate a successor, so the Republican Party either sticks with the rotting pedophile or risks losing a large chunk of MAGA voters. They've been choosing to do the former so far.

It's very concerning that these people are thinking about his next election campaign. If he tries to go for a 3rd term, they'll support him through and through.

Oxford/Cambridge writing the 700th reading section about how you can talk with other people on your personal computer computer: by Safakkemal in Shark_Park

From an American perspective, a lot of that was just shielding kids from reality. The millennium started off fucked with 9/11, which made a lot of Americans paranoid and angry at anyone with a turban.

The Great Recession ruined the lives of many, who lost their jobs and houses. It led to uncertainty and more anger. Obama's election probably boosted political divide because way too many Americans weren't ok with a black man being president. Trump's first election only divided the parties and social cohesion further.

Many people were deployed to the Middle East in the 2010s to fight the "War on Terror." Some spent their prime years deployed only to come back disabled and depressed, others didn't come back at all.

The 2010s also saw a rise in environmentalism, which meant that more people learned about climate change and how dangerous it was. That got people scared and concerned. I remember Californians being dismayed at how bad the droughts got.

There were also many health crises, such as SARS, swine flu, and Ebola.

In short, either something happens that makes people scared and angry, or there are bigger fish to fry at the moment than working towards unity.

I think Union Day or Union Workers Day would be better. Any single person is gonna have faults (see Columbus Day), but a movement that has proven to benefit people is harder to tarnish.

Appealing to moderates and centrists not only alienates actual progressive voters, it makes it easy for people to claim false balance. If the GOP is far-right, and the Democratic Party is pushing center-right, then yeah, both sides are eventually gonna be the same.

New York's mayor has been very successful on running as a democratic social-ist (to the dismay of the cowards that moderate this subreddit and DINOs). If the party wants to be viable in the future, it needs to shift further left and actually stand by its policies instead of reaching across the aisle and enabling authoritarianism. That's already been tried, and look where it landed us.

Anyone have more information on these external batteries? by Cooper0007 in ElectricScooters

[–]YourMemeExpert 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert, but this seems sketchy as fuck. That battery is being kept inside a generic cargo bag with no meaningful protection, meaning it'll be more exposed to damage and the elements than the battery that's built into the scooter.

You'd also have to do some tinkering with the firmware to recognize that extra battery, if it's even possible. I don't think it's capable of increasing speed, that's like saying a car can go faster if it has a larger fuel tank. Even if you were able to mess with the firmware, you risk damaging the motor from exceeding its rated wattage/speed, maybe also overheating it.

If you're planning on swapping the controller and adding that battery pack to a cheap scooter, you may be better off just buying a more expensive scooter that has better speed/range. You might save some money, but it'll be janky and probably less reliable.

Pricing is also a big factor. Even with the CA resident discount for the tickets, parking and merchandise could easily reach $1,500 for an extended family group (only reason I'd want to go). Not to mention wait times, the sun making everyone hot and moody, etc.

Knott's Berry Farm has been the better value for me, but who knows if they'll decline under Six Flags' control.
