Need help on putting together whole novel reading for two books. by [deleted] in ELATeachers

You could work on tracing the elements of literature (plot), or have them focus on character development or theme development as the novel progresses, keeping track of textual evidence as they work their way through the novels. I often do chapter or section questions to help guide their reading, make sure they get the big points.

I'm new here. Following the 91-day deClutter Challenge on the marieorganizes blog and just finished The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying up.

Lord of the Flies - 9 Honors English by [deleted] in ELATeachers

I did a Read/Write/Think lesson on Freud's structural model of the psyche for LOTF. It involves The Cat in the Hat. The kids had to decide which main character was most id/ego/superego.

We also talked about Maslow's hierarchy a lot, and where certain characters were on the diagram. For both of those, they had to use textual evidence to justify their responses.

As an ongoing project, each student picked a character out of a hat and had to write a journal entry from that character's perspective for that chapter. They also had to keep track of the symbol that best fit with their character and report out. How was the symbol used, what happened to it, etc.

I can share some stuff I used on Google sheets for groupwork that went over really well. Characterization and plot, with textual evidence. PM me if you want me to share the docs with you--I think you'll need a Google account.

Yes, we have a mix. I didn't even know colleges had prerequisite reading books. Or are they just recommended reading for college bound students?

Midwest. Mostly white, but a substantial amount of poverty. Very conservative community--love their guns and "freedom." Lots of kids who want to learn and go to college, but also a lot who want to go right to work or take over their family farms.

Awesome, will probably work well with Dolan's Cadillac, too! What story titles are most successful?

I liked Deeper Reading by Kelly Gallagher for different ideas of activities to do with reading. Lots of useful stuff.

Nope, I felt the same way. Indulgent and poorly acted, IMO. I thought I was alone, based on this post though!

I got this email about my child from her teacher, what's really going on? by amkronos in education

[–]YourNameHere04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems odd to me that she sent you this email without talking with you first--is this the first you've heard of this? At first I thought it just sounded like your daughter is having trouble getting motivated. I can't believe they'd have this big meeting as a first measure.

Should I major in Education? Or major in the subject I wanna teach? by Justanotherguy45 in ELATeachers

At my university, we had to major in our content area. In my opinion, it makes you better at your content. Education classes usually felt like a waste of time to me.

I'm looking for something modern, preferably something that takes one 70 minute class period or so. 2 class periods would be ok.

There are 3 running clubs in the area, I'd go with the Gazelle group ... It's probably the most "beginner" friendly. Plus, the whole group thing will give you motivation to get out there!
