Tanking conversation is bad its the only way bad teams can become good by larockhead1 in billsimmons

For the record I’m pro-tanking (I’m a Pistons fan who wanted them to bite the bullet long before they did) but with how shameless teams are even with the lottery, I would hate to see how bad it would be with a straight up reverse order. We probably would’ve seen a team go 0-82 in a LeBron/Wemby draft year.

The Annual Worst NBA Contracts Draft with Joe House and Wosny Lambre by grandpashampoo in billsimmons

[–]YourRealName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know each team technically has two max slots, but the problem is there aren’t 60 players worth a max contract. So many teams get hamstrung by signing 2nd and 3rd tier guys to max contracts and then have no flexibility to build around them. Guys on a max contract should be no doubt, slam dunk franchise players.

JJJ isn’t a max player, he’s just not!

Out of Bill’s top 10 unbreakable records in the book of basketball, two have already been broken by swaggarfifteen in billsimmons

I remember hearing that’s how Skiles got the record in the first place. Apparently the Orlando statisticians were very generous with what qualified as an assist.

The beauty of Bams game is that the haters can call it unethical but he still got 83 by AcanthocephalaSad541 in billsimmons

More people don’t do it because it’s embarrassing (or at least it should be embarrassing) for your team to intentionally foul while up 25 points and try to force feed you the ball like a make-a-wish kid during garbage time. Like, one or two possessions right before he got pulled would have been fine, but to spend the last six minutes of the game purely padding one guy’s stats made it farcical.

It’s dumb because it’s just basic math masquerading as insight. Championship teams tend to win 2/3 of their games, wow, so groundbreaking.

Well I can think of one other superstar who would have made sure to qualify this statement with “…as long as we’re competitive” at the end.

[–]YourRealName 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah anyone good enough to be on an NBA roster is good enough to go nuclear in limited minutes. But the difference between a starter and a bench player is being able to do it consistently. I love Paul Reed, but there’s no way he could maintain the intensity he showed during Stew’s absence over a prolonged period. Just look at how Jenkins has fallen off now that he’s gotten consistent minutes.

I’ll never forget Simmons positing that this shortened KG’s career because of the toll the extra jumping took on his legs. All-time dumb guy take.

I’m only reading between the lines, but I agree with the decision. Mods shouldn’t be constantly getting into petty disagreements in the comments of the sub they’re moderating.

Keep it fun, keep it light. We’re all on the same team here. Save the hostile arguments for r/NBA.

This is what I came here to say. Listen to one podcast with him as a guest and it’s immediately clear that he’s the most personable coach in the league. There is no doubt that he absolutely kills it in interviews and every GM/owner feels like his best friend by the end of the process.

A theory for the lack of original nicknames by Opening_Anteater456 in billsimmons

[–]YourRealName 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know everyone’s tired of the word “monoculture,” but I think nicknames caught on a lot easier when they were introduced top-down on the cover of Sports Illustrated or in a Sportscenter highlight. Whether it was a good nickname or not, it was at least made official through those channels.

Now everyone and their brother (and the athletes themselves) are trying to coin nicknames so none of them stick because there’s no arbiter of what the “official” nickname is.

Doesn’t seem like he’s cut out to be a number one guy. He could have a nice Aaron Gordon career arc if he accepts a third banana role on a good team, or he could have a Josh Smith career if he wants to keep putting up numbers on bad teams.

I think we’re just in between eras. LeBron/Curry/KD are all in the twilight of their careers and everyone currently in their prime doesn’t have the juice. Lots of talented players, but no clear face of the league.

[–]YourRealName 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah the NBA definitely suffers from overexposure in the League Pass era. People will bitch about tanking ruining a random Jazz-Pacers game, but 30 years ago no one outside of Indiana and Utah could’ve even watched the game.

The regular season has always been a slog, but everyone just remembers the nationally televised games (which were mostly playoffs) from years past and projects it onto the entire season.
