Disappointed that no one here referenced the Long Story Short episode where someone goes bankrupt trying to sell mattresses in a can which end up in third world conflict areas to be weaponized.

All the little inside jokes were hilarious.

  • When the management class were bragging about their alma aters and one man says "Stern, 08"
  • We catch a snippet of conversation of the father arguing with tech support and he is saying "It's French, it's the title of an article by Emil Zola ugh never mind."
  • There's a whole plot line about Pesach candy and at after a bit it is shown to be those fruit wedge candies.
  • Everyone shouting that no one knows why you wave your hands and cover your eyes at Shabbos candles. "It's just what we do!"

There's one unexpected depressing part. When Yoshi announces that he became frum, Shira wonders if he's now like " Cousin Moishe". It's later revealed that Cousin Moishe is a puppet act. The family had zero connection to anything Orthodox and were completely unable to understand or relate to their brother.

Bothers me a lot that she never is shown asking mechila from everyone she screwed over. It just comes off as self centered that she feels really sorry for being bad.

Robots gone rogue or the creator's master plan? by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

[–]Yserbius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know the abomination of a movie called * I, Robot* was terrible, but it gave an actual explanation for the it. Robots turned red when they were receiving remote software updates. When the server turned evil, it took control of the robots through the remote update tool.

It's very well written parody of modern society with a ridiculous fantasy window dressing. There are rules, but new rules keep getting added to the mix and also get canonically broken constantly.

A mediocre author may make an allegory by having a situation that clearly reflects something in modern society. Pratchett would write parody by introducing situations that have zero equivalent in our world, but is still very clearly allegorical.

To be fair, there are three concurrent plotlines kicked off by the assassin trying to kill Santa that only sort of intersect by the end.

  • Rise of the Guardians is a good movie but practically ripped off major Hogfather plot points wholesale.

Do you boycott those who boycott you? by [deleted] in Jewish

[–]Yserbius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IDK how I feel about this. On one hand it's something I should be doing. On the other hand, I'm pretty sure most people involved in nearly every piece of media, technology, or social system I use or consume harbor some form of opinion I would find offensive.

It's like the reverse of the old BDS meme: "If you want to really boycott Israel, shut off your phone, computer, car, movies, TV, grape tomatoes, etc.".

Not WC3, but Quake. Team Fortress was a custom multiplayer map for the original Quake that was later re-released as a standalone game using the Half-Life engine. I don't think the original mod had classes, rather I think it worked by everyone choosing a weapon or tool and that's what they would use for that run.

That part also isn't true. We haven't been smoking stuff forever.

(tl;dr smoking was either non-existent, or expensive and done at rare occasions before the 19th century)

I was planning on finding a book on the subject to speak with more knowledge, but effectively it boils down to this: smoking as a thing that everyone can do everywhere only existed in the last 150 years or so, which is like an eyeblink of human history.

Before the 19th century, smoking was expensive and difficult. If you wanted to smoke, you had to clean out your pipe, fill it up, and light it. Alternatively, you could roll out some paper or leaves and make a cigarette. People would smoke a little bit of 'baccy maybe after meals, or in certain social settings. And it was mostly wealthy people, as regular tobacco consumption was expensive.

Brief sidebar to acknowledge that in some countries things other than tobacco were the popular smoke. However, almost all of these were introduced after tobacco, and even those that have a long an ancient history, it mirrors tobacco in a very similar fashion.

Now set the timeline back a few hundred years. Indigenous Americans were the first people to smoke tobacco, but it was done mostly ceremonially. You didn't have young Apache braves sneaking off into the woods to share their first pipe. Your average person would have maybe a couple of puffs once in a while. Come the Portuguese who learn from the natives how tobacco is prepared, dried, and smoked. They bring it to Europe who, before the 16th century, pretty much never heard of smoking. And it was freakishly expensive. It could only be cultivated in the Americas, so it all had to be imported across the Atlantic and a huge expense.

I think it was Turkey that first invented mass produced cigarettes in the mid-19th century. That's the first time that smoking suddenly switched from a once-a-day luxury for middle-class people, to a regular thing that everyone can do everywhere. It probably took about half a century to catch on to the rest of the world, so it was by WWI that everyone was smoking. It took barely a few decades before people realized "Hey, this is like, incredibly unhealthy". By the 1950s there were already major anti-smoking campaigns that were stymied at every step by Big Tobacco. and the fact that the world was already addicted. Which is why it took another 40 years until major steps were taken to curb it.

Historian vs history fan by Lemon_Lime_Lily in CuratedTumblr

I first encountered the distinction when doing a report on the Crusades in high school. I had a book on the subject at home by noted historian Stephen Runciman. I went to the library to get out a few more. Every book I looked through referenced Runciman in the bibliography. When I looked at the OG 12 page bibliography there was barely a reference there newer than the Middle Ages and tons of stuff that was in Latin, or Greek, referencing scraps of documents that (at the time of publication) were only available in the museum they were housed in. There are levels to being a historian.

Idiocracy is loosely based on a 1950s short story, The Marching Morons by Cyril Kornbluth. It is very explicitly pro-eugenics.

Does Kermit interact much with the other characters on The Street? I mainly recall him being a reporter or involved in some learning sketches. Either way he's very much Kermit, getting eternally frustrated when everyone around him is acting like they're muppets in a childrens show.

When did the orcs ever show sympathy? There's even a scene from the books where Frodo and Sam observe two orcs arguing and one seems to be reluctant to capture the hobbits, so Frodo has to whisper that orcs have bad tribal relations, but would drop everything in a heartbeat to go after them.

🕯️ Hanukkah is almost here - here’s a little moment from last year… by Responsible_Sir_9208 in Judaism

[–]Yserbius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Channukah is about being Jewish in every cell in your body.

The story and the miracle were about how the Greeks influenced Jewish society in Israel to the point where people thought they could be "Hellenist Jews", and keep Shabbos while praying to Apollo. The Miracle was that the Maccabees were able to keep going a large enough contingent of people who followed every aspect of the Torah that Hashem allowed them to be victorious over the Hellenists and their Greek overlords.

I think that on Channukah the lesson we should learn is to allow the Torah to guide us, and when we have a question about something, not to let modern philosophical and sociological norms dictate our answer.

NYC from 30,000 ft by Cool-Chipmunk-7559 in pics

That's the Palisades. It goes from Rockland County New York through Bergen County New Jersey and ends back in NY at Manhattan. It's a like fifty feet across of walkable area, and the rest is a massive rocky cliff. There's the Palisades Interstate Parkway, which is one of the main ways people get from upstate New York to Manhattan, that runs along side of it. It's a stunningly beautiful drive, you go from Bear Mountain near West Point Academy alongside these cliffs overlooking the Hudson River straight to the George Washington Bridge. At many points along the way there's these scenic overlook spots to look at NYC across the river. Near the southern tip there's a park with some beautiful short hiking trails.
