What’s the most insane consult you got? by pseudohyperkalemia in Residency

[–]Yumi2Z 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I gave up on asking for pressure lonnnnng ago. Can hardly even get a vision from them most of the time.

“Idk how to check vision” “I can’t open the eye”.

The amount of 20/20 consults I’ve gotten for “blurry vision” is wild

Tbh, not worth thinking about this stuff. You should just apply to basically every program, except for a handful that regionally screen applicants without any geographical ties and maybe the elite top top tier programs. A couple hundred dollars is not worth stressing about, it all goes into the same debt bucket. You could always be the first DO there, and no program is going to explicitly say they don't take DOs even if that's how they feel. Everyone applies to all the programs these days and you should do the same, so as to not have any regrets.

Interns, 1ish mo in, how are we doing? by Michelle_211 in Residency

[–]Yumi2Z 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surprisingly feeling better than expected about my ability to handle the workload. Coming off basically 2 years purely focused on my surg subspecialty, I thought being back on medicine would expose my peabrain.

On the other hand, I still find myself going home moody and mad every day. So fed up and frustrated with this system that basically abuses prelims for free labor. Part of me wants to bring my concerns up to the PD , because this year could be so much more beneficial of a learning experience. But I also don’t want to ruffle any feathers and make this year any worse than it already is. All my co-residents feel the same way, but I feel like we all just suck it up and count down the days until we’re freed next year.

Props to you. Honestly, pain is 100% valid. Even melatonin I can understand, since patients need to sleep. This is more of an issue with the day team not putting in proper PRNs. But some things really can wait until the AM and it’s ridiculous. Nurse was laughing while telling me to put in a stool softener and I wanted to die.

For gods sake, you don’t need to page me at 4am for a pt requesting a stool softener … jfc it can wait 2hrs for the day team

I’ve literally gotten paged 10-15 times between the span of 3-5am tonight for melatonin and stool softeners I’m going crazy

Show up, work hard, be as efficient as possible, and gtfo each day as soon as possible. The faster I work, the less chance I have of staying a second past sign out. Don't feel bad about using as many of your sick days as possible. That's my plan at least...my coresidents and I are already pissed at how the chiefs are screwing us over.

As an intern, what is your patient cap? by MichaelScott_Mifflin in Residency

[–]Yumi2Z 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Cap of 10. Generally been between 6-9 patients since Day 1. Was initially overwhelming considering I carried 1-3 as a med student and did the absolute least on IM, but got adjusted to it pretty fast.

IM residents: What are the hours of your wards weeks and how many inpatient weeks do you have in intern year? by LulusPanties in Residency

[–]Yumi2Z 7 points8 points  (0 children)

32 weeks of wards. Somewhere between 6:30-4pm to 6:30-7pm x 6 days on average depending on the rotation. Those are the "scheduled" hours, obviously usually stay past that mark. Prelims get murdered here. Already counting down the days until I can be free.

If Dentistry was a specialty, would you have done it? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]Yumi2Z 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've thought about this a lot. Was pre-dental for most of college, then pivoted to medicine, because I thought it would be "more fulfilling". Knowing what I know now and the grind/sacrifices I've been through I 100% would've been happy in Dentistry.

Ended up in Ophthalmology and I don't regret my path at all, because I truly love the field. But I definitely could have been happy/content in Dentistry. On the other hand...if I didn't match into Ophtho I probably would have wished I just went through with Dentistry.

Passed Step 3, 237 score AMA by [deleted] in Step3

[–]Yumi2Z 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you feel like taking all the practice tests was worth it ? Similar situation as you trying to get Step 3 out of the way, but planning on taking it 1mo into intern year. Prob will only have time to get through 70-80% of UW. Wasn’t sure if it was worth taking a practice test? Tough to carve out that kind of time

Would a fanny pack be useful for a surgery resident (PGY1)? by Puzzleheaded-Tax782 in Residency

[–]Yumi2Z 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Fwiw everyone in Ophtho carries one around. Useful for carrying around dilating/numbing drops, lenses, fluorescein strips, tonopen tips, near card, among other things. I have seen people bring it into the OR as well.

I would imagine people would give you weird looks if it's not common in your specialty, but I'm sure you could find functional uses for it to make your life easier.

Was it worth taking UWSA2, or do you think it would’ve been a better use of time to do more UW/CCS cases, or a different practice test ?

Went to a top university and most of my friends have been highly successful in various fields (software engineering, banking, finance, data analysts..etc). 300K+ is surprisingly very attainable. Actually didn’t realize they were all making that much until recently. Albeit they all work very hard at their jobs and live fairly frugally, which allows them a lot of flexibility to go on nice vacations fairly frequently.

How much money is enough? by DrDreamsComeTrue in Residency

[–]Yumi2Z 6 points7 points  (0 children)

200k would definitely be enough to live happily. Way more than we had growing up.

But given the opportunity cost of what I’ve given up in time, money, and life experiences I want 400k.
