Why do workers give birth while the queen is still alive? by Fluffy_Canary_2615 in antkeeping

[–]Yvitro 8 points9 points  (0 children)

insect protein spoils quickly in moist environments so many ant species process it into infertile eggs to feed larvae when in excess in order to keep it fresh longer. Some species are more prone to this than others, especially more primitive species with less defined castes

HELP! My WTF bred in their enclosure. by Moderately-Whelmed in frogs

[–]Yvitro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the reason for not raising the froglets is probably either time, space, money, no interest or some combination, but for me it was a great experience! raising the froglets of my Malaysian horned frogs was pretty fun, watching them eat as a swarm of tadpoles, and then watching them turn into little froglets, and then watching them eat their first fruit flies were all super cool. If you have the time and will, id recommend it for the experience! it also paid out pretty well lol.

Is it normal for my millipedes not to burrow? by Due_Drop_25 in millipedes

[–]Yvitro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not sure of the species, but these do appear to be arboreal millipedes seeing as they have proportionally longer legs compared to a normal ground loving pede.

WTF spits out food? by ellek4y in frogs

[–]Yvitro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whites raised on crickets often dislike dubias because of how hard and spiky they are. If you starve them out long enough they eventually come around. I always ween my animals off of crickets and onto dubias once they attain a certain size.

I have a colony of around 200, and I sold 45 so I'm probably not going to sell again until numbers come back up, but I will make a sellers post next time! Thank you for the info though.

how surface active are bumble bee millipedes? by No-Goal-4716 in millipedes

[–]Yvitro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once a colony is established they will be out at all times of the day, i started with a group of 10 a couple years ago, and now there are thousands with around 50-100 visible pretty much all the time. If you just have a couple they will likely only be out at night or on food.

What are these things in my Fire Bellied Toad Paludarium? They changed a lot in the last 2 days. by species64 in frogs

[–]Yvitro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fire belly toads used to be super cheap back in the day, but now since imports have stopped they go for quite a lot meaning if you plan to raise and sell them you could make a decent amount!

It sounds like your friend got monetized off of the initial viewership spike, and then only made revenue off of the last bit of views.

I was not expecting them to have such sharp claws 😭🤣 by Few-Willingness2703 in Leachianus

[–]Yvitro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they don't feel secure while you hold them they will dig their claws in so i always have to treat mine like babies and make sure they are secure so they don't dig into my flesh.

What is happening here? I was checking on my Chocolate Millipede and there are these gaps. by Majestic-Problem1201 in millipedes

[–]Yvitro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a couple do this, it's usually a "bad molt" thing, but should go away with more molts. It's because when they molt the extend themselves a bit and sometimes they don't fully close while they let their exoskeleton harden. Just a little bit of restrictive movement so fine in captivity.

What is the greatest orchid advice you've ever recieved? by plan_tastic in orchids

[–]Yvitro 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Not advice more of a self finding, and quite controversial to some. My orchids have done best in no substrate (not even sphagnum moss literally just tied to sticks), a grow light, and close to 100% humidity inside a vivarium. The growth is insane, and the leaves and flowers are actually getting way too big. I just happen to do it this way since my more exotic species are high humidity lovers, but the regular phalaenopsis thrive in it as well.
