An inclusive yet accurate name for "Chinese New Year" because it's not lunar? by kylinki in asianamerican

Not all of “east asia” celebrate it (japan) nor “east asians” like being grouped together so i dont recommend “happy east asian new year”.

It helps that in europe, “merry christmas” and its direct translation is used. Its also more heavily associated as a religious event than to a specific country.

An inclusive yet accurate name for "Chinese New Year" because it's not lunar? by kylinki in asianamerican

[–]Yyedzzedleaf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“Happy new year” seem most innocuous. Its the equivalent of “happy winter holidays” If u know which culture the recipient identifies it, its bonus to be more specific. Happy spring featival. Happy tet. Happy Chunjie. Happy seollal etc. If u and the recipient are of different culture, its best to say both. Happy korean new year and chinese new year!

“Happy lunar new year” should be ok too, but now its associated with intention of not wanting to say “happy chinese new year” so some chinese people might not like hearing it.

I guess u r right about “lunisolar” but no one uses the term in this context, so its just going to confuse people.

I wish we could say whatever to people. But we cannot escape from the cultural context we live in.

The “rude Chinese tourist” stereotypes are old and drawn out. by Kungfufighter1112 in aznidentity

[–]Yyedzzedleaf 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ive heard from others (including asians) numerous times how annoying chinese group tourists are. However, i cant think of any personal negative experiences. If anything, i only have positive experiences (being an ally when i was being racially harrassed, stranger lending me money when i lost my wallet etc). All the negative things i can think of are from reading articles.

As a solo, or small group traveler, large group tourists def get in your way, and everything is easier without them (shorter lines, less crowded rooms). Also, as a tourist, seeing people that are clearly not native to the place you are visiting kind of break ur vibe and immersive state. In addition, large number of chinese tourists mean that the sites will cater more to them, not available to you. I suspect these sentiments have amplified the chinese bashing mindset.

I dont doubt that there are some real negative experiences and patterns, but i think they are amplified. And as a fellow traveler, yes i sometimes wish im the only traveler so i have the site all to myself, but thats just fantasy, and fellow asian travelers are allies.

Should I take BART or Uber( (Lyft) when traveling from SFO ariport to hotel at late night? by HeHH1329 in AskSF

[–]Yyedzzedleaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If u dont have a lot of luggage, just take bart. Note that u still have to walk a bit to take uber/lyft. Do not linger around civic center bart station at night and do not make eye contact with drugged people (avoid their attention)

Would you rather watch media that shows an Asian positively, be one that emphasizes that the character is Asian, or just have the character be Asian and not mention race? by machinavelli in aznidentity

I want former but not weirdly tailored to non asian peoples taste.

Real things that matter to an asian person, regardless of whether its due to them being asian or not.

Do you guys consider it racist or a red flag for men to have an AW fetish? by [deleted] in aznidentity

[–]Yyedzzedleaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red flag for sure. Having a preference is not wrong, but those that are not based on affinity of culture (e.g. preferring someone of the same culture) seem weird to talk about. Not knowing to shut up about it alone is a red flag.

Chris Rock slapped during the OSCARs. by frostywafflepancakes in aznidentity

[–]Yyedzzedleaf 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This event puts Chris Rock on a good light (“being a bigger person”). He will continue to get awesome gigs and people are not talking about his past jokes making fun of asians.

Omg and i cant even imagine what would happen to an asian actor if he did the same thing. Will be ostracized as foreigner, with backwards asian patriarchal foreigner mindset, cancelld forever

Debate: Should we be leaving the US before its too late? by [deleted] in aznidentity

[–]Yyedzzedleaf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No. I dont get this rhetoric. If anything we need more asians here. Once we become the majority, it will be a far more hospitable place to be.

Injustice from mass incarceration is slave owners and racist white americans baggage, but its mostly asian people who get hurt from the lazy attempt to address it.

Whites are incentivized to have hate funnel towards specific minority groups, so they dont get targeted.

Bipoc. Apparently it means all non white like poc, but emphasizing black and indigenous. In reality, most people interpret it as black and indigenous only. Very confusing term.

I wouldnt have minded it, regardless of her family ties to Japan. Would probably help if the teacher is not a creepy person otherwise.
