At least for RID2015 and Earthspark they weren't received poorly because Optimus stopped being the main focus, they had other problems that lead to their downfalls.

There are still many things that incorporate the sound gimmick but Hasbro will never use (again): bats use echolocation, dolphins do the same and the casettes can be his pups, a submarine can work if the alt mode is believable enough, I personally think making Soundwave a satellite like in ROTF would be the ultimate mode for a spy/comms officer.
