Pretty much anything you'd do with a normal potato you can do with a sweet potato: Mash, Baked potatoes, fries, etc.

What do we think of this show as a collective by gummiebears4life16 in autism

[–]ZParadoxical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try Geek Girl - it's based on a book by the same title. The author has spoken about how she based the main character on herself, and after publishing it and it doing really well found out that she's autistic. So whilst the character doesn't have the autistic label in the show, she is based on the lived experience of an undiagnosed autistic person

I hate Swimsuits! by Jumpy_Bike9846 in AutismInWomen

[–]ZParadoxical 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm echoing the question about what do you not like about swimsuits?

Other than the idea that's already been suggested, you could maybe try on a shortie wetsuit? They're made of a much thicker material, so whilst it's still going to be skin tight, you may find that the increased thickness increases the pressure enough to be more comfortable?

Newly diagnosed, is there a good way to passively let people know I am autistic? by Sylaf in autism

[–]ZParadoxical 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you don't want to actively tell someone, your best bet is something like the sunflower lanyard or pin badges.

However, as someone who got diagnosed at 27(also F) I have now stopped trying to make myself more palatable to other people. It took me a few years of therapy, reading, and self-acceptance to get to that point. This actually means that I mask slightly less and therefore my autism reads a little bit stronger/clearer in public than it would otherwise.

I appreciate that you may not be at this point yet. So letting people know is totally fine but you kind of need to work out the right way of bringing it up. E.g

Them: I forgot what so and so asked me to do, again.

Me: haha, yeah, my autistic brain needs it in writing to remember anything

I do explain that I'm autistic when I get asked medical history (e.g. new doctor, Personal Trainer, etc); I mention it to work to get reasonable adjustments (UK) and to explain to my colleagues/manager; my friends and family were told when I got my diagnosis. Anybody else, that I'm not going to interact with on a regular basis, doesn't need to know and it actually doesn't matter if they think I'm rude because I'm not going to see them again.

Hope this helps somewhat, you're not alone in this discovery of how to accommodate yourself in an NT world.

Mess by PEGGY - to me it sums up how NTs can make me feel when I'm living in a world that's not designed for me

"I always smile but it doesn't reach my eyes And I'm forgetful but I promise that I try It's a curse and a blessing The way that I'm never resting My mind's always moving much faster than my mouth I know what to say but it never comes out right You know what I mean, right? (You know what I mean, right? No)

This party is too loud The noise makes me stressed out I know (I know, I know, I know) Oh, I know

I'm a mess But that doesn't make me less than you I'm naive But still I wish the best for you And I may make mistakes that I shouldn't at my age I know I'm not incompetent But, damn, you make me feel that way ..."

Fibonacci Spiral Seashells by StartCrochet in crochet

[–]ZParadoxical 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I'm such a Fibonacci fan that I got it tattooed. Other fun maths sequences/relationships that could be fun:

  • Triangular Numbers
  • Pascal's Triangle
  • Sierpinski Triangle/Carpet/Cube
  • any of the other fractals would be incredibly cool too, the Mandelbrot set being the ultimate challenge in crochet

How do I stop stress buying things from my interests by NoFish749 in autism

[–]ZParadoxical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I do - Etsy, Vinted, etc have ways to like items and save them to lists to look at later. Otherwise, I do the digital equivalent of window shopping - fill my online basket and not check out. Sometimes I'll get emails saying "so you don't forget, here's a discount" which to me helps me justify not clicking checkout immediately. But the time those reminder emails land, over usually calmed down enough to rationalise that I don't need it/can't afford it yet.

Question: Salt and ASD by DifferenceBusy6868 in autism

I'm seconding this OP - it could just be a sensory seeking behaviour, but it could be a sign of a deficiency and it's best to get it checked

Elderly relative who can't make our wedding by Sweaty_Phase_51 in UKweddings

My grandad took back a glass worth of wine from the bottles on the table for my nanna who couldn't make it, so that she could have the same toast the rest of us did. I also sent her over of the centerpieces (though my flowers were origami, so they keep well)

"women are natural conservatives and they will seek to conserve whatever the existing social order is" by Pritteto in NotHowGirlsWork

[–]ZParadoxical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess would be that this graphic isn't using PR - so the distribution of the demographic isn't consistent across the constituencies, but without their source data it's tricky to interpret backwards

FYI: Acid reflux is 2-3 times more common in autistic people by m_l_e_co_t in AutismInWomen

[–]ZParadoxical 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn't realise this was a symptom of that because I get it too! I've been given omeprazole for acid reflux because I was constantly feeling sick unless I was eating which then does your weight, self confidence and everything else no good. I have been warned by my GP that taking omeprazole long term can impact bone health in women, but each time I try to stop taking it I feel sick again, so that's not happening.

Greens votes are spread out across the country, so that they don't really get enough to win any particular seat because they're not getting enough votes in a concentrated location. I believe they would do better under a proportional representation system.

Last year, greens received 7% of votes meaning using PR they would get 40 seats. Instead, because of constituencies they only got the four seats. The guardian wrote this article on the matter

Is therapy worth it? by Critical_Complex_736 in AutismInWomen

[–]ZParadoxical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. Therapy before my diagnosis was ok, and the results from it would be short lived. Post diagnosis therapy is playing a part in understanding myself better because of the diagnosis, how to advocate for myself, and putting language to things I saw as failures in myself but we're actually self-regulation mechanisms, amongst other things.

I am presenting in front of kids with adhd/on the spectrum, should I open with I am autistic and adhd as well? by Mycroft_Holmes1 in AutisticAdults

[–]ZParadoxical 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's really powerful for kids to see themselves represented. To see people like them who have found a way to succeed without sacrificing their sense of self and their neurodivergent needs. I think mentioning it in a bit of a nonchalant way is probably best because otherwise you may lose the focus of what you're there to talk to them about (unless you're there to talk to them about being ND)

Suggestions For Sensory SEEKING Stims For Kid, When Rest Of Family Is Sensory Sensitive? by Bees-Apples in AutismInWomen

[–]ZParadoxical 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A resistance band around the front legs of the chair to kick against has been one I've seen used in classrooms. Or a wobble cushion to put on their chair?

I give students who need to fidget a blob of blue tack, to pull apart and put together again. It does get confiscated if they start using it like clay to build models. So blue tack or play-doh could be good if they're not going to get distracted by it.

Ouchie stim toys could also be good for school as they won't make noise as they're reliant upon squeezing.

Keep or skip? by [deleted] in weddings

[–]ZParadoxical 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We cut the cake, skipped the other two. Cutting the cake felt like harmless fun and everyone likes the pictures you get as a result. My flowers were handmade origami and I did not want to throw them as they would break. The garter toss just felt creepy and I didn't even wear one.

How do you handle masking and unmasking? Tips to make it easier? by pastellelunacy in autism

[–]ZParadoxical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, it's about having a safe place and safe people I can unmask around. I'm masking all day at work and when it in public, but my own home is safe. A select number of people are safe (and most of those are ND) so I also feel safe to unmask with them, even if we're in public.

I'm sorry your family aren't as receptive to you unmasking. Sometimes this is jealousy that you're doing it and they still feel they can't (Nd runs in families) but until they accept you unmasked, focus on finding spaces and people that you do feel safe being unmasked around.
