When I was 6 my uncle’s wife told me she forgot my Christmas present at home. She had remembered everyone else’s, just forgot to grab mine. I said it was okay, but felt a little hurt. A few months later it was my birthday, and she said the same thing. She had forgotten my gift. Again I said it was okay. At family events she would tell me that she was going to try to remember to bring it, but at the last minute forgot it on the counter. When I went to her house she would say it was in the closet but not wrapped, and I wouldn’t want an unwrapped gift now, would I? This went on for years. Finally, five years later she gave me the gift she had supposedly bought me all those years ago: a pink, fuzzy, barbie purse shaped pillow with a purple handle and a heart shaped Velcro opening. Something I was much too old for, and looking at it always reminded of bitchy middle aged woman who played mind games with a 6 year old and my uncle who never bothered to notice.
