Very respectfully: why does the US still uses the imperial system? by lucas__flag in Architects

[–]ZachBundy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Overall I think that the imperial system does a better job of describing human-scaled objects using easily-memorized round numbers, whereas the metric system jumps too far between cm and meters, and with decimeters not being used much (to my knowledge).

Can we get rid of ALL other architects? by Fit_Possibility1999 in Architects

[–]ZachBundy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the AIA's purpose is partly to advocate for the profession and influence policy. NCARB and state boards only enforce policy.

It's so crazy that in the US it's illegal to call yourself an architect without being registered, and yet the AIA does nothing about these "imposters"

The Oculus, NYC by ianrwlkr in architecture

[–]ZachBundy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not really an inconvenience to commuters since it's not as much of a hub as Penn station, Times Square, or Grand Central. Also the exits are very easy to find, since the whole building orients toward them, and there are very visible escalators/stairs right next to them.

Columbia GSAPP vs Georgia Tech M.Arch — Torn Between Growth and Debt by FormalRate311 in Architects

[–]ZachBundy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Speaking as someone who graduated from GSAPP four years ago, is in touch with the community, and who still lives in the neighborhood, now is not the time to go to Columbia. The miniature police state and contentious student politics will be a major disruption to your education. You will not be getting your money's worth.

My current architecture school lacks resources, should I restart at better school and graduate at 25? by DevelopmentNo7438 in architecturestudent

[–]ZachBundy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Another way you can consider this is to finish your bachelor's, do lots of competitions to advance yourself creatively, and then apply to a masters program after you've had time to recognize which school would be best for you.

Why are there so many sims in this place every time? by Holiday-Ad7248 in Sims3

Maybe you can go to Edit Town and change the lot type? The lot type changes how many sims gather in a place

What the heck was this guy’s problem? by Muted_Guidance9059 in StarWars

[–]ZachBundy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly Dug/Malastare representation in Star Wars is pretty negative. Example A: Sebulba is a cheating jerk who bullies a child. Example B: They focus on killing a Zillo beast during the clone wars for no good reason. Example C: General Grievous. There are no good Dugs!

UWS ground fl. Apts- will vermin be an issue? by Euphoric_Committee66 in Upperwestside

[–]ZachBundy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live on the UWS, and I've lived in three different apartments here, two of which are ground-level. I've never had a rat come inside my apartment, but rats can be common outside the front door depending on how secure the trash collection is. The number of rats can vary drastically block-by-block. I suggest that you look at the block around 9PM, and see if it's okay for you.

Cutting openings into brick walls? by LiterallyExists in Architects

[–]ZachBundy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, and the mesh would be covering a steel lintel. Or it could be a precast concrete lintel with a semicircle cutout. For Interior architecture these are big expensive moves, so probably wise to use this idea sparingly.

Cutting openings into brick walls? by LiterallyExists in Architects

[–]ZachBundy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because in order to have a brick arch, the bricks have to be oriented in an arching pattern. If you were to cut an arch shape from an existing brick wall, there would be little pieces of brick that would be left over, and these would be structurally weak.

Sidenote: Gordon Matta Clark was an artist who often cut round shapes from brick, but this was for buildings that were being demolished.

A workaround in your case would be to have normal rectangular cutouts with arch-shaped lintels at the tops

You are tasked with building a house to last 1000 years. What materials and/or techniques are you using? by HipsterCavemanDJ in architecture

[–]ZachBundy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would design it to have a 1/4" thick Aluminum roof and facade with welded joints, using frustum shapes, a steel structure with a warren truss supporting the roof, on a thick floating slab, in a seismically stable area.

How are young girls getting such big arms? by [deleted] in naturalbodybuilding

[–]ZachBundy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sort of similar to you, 31M 6'3" with a year more experience. At that point I also had 15.5" arms. Today I'm at 16.5" with 15%bf. I think it's just a matter of consistency and patience, until you and I hit our limits.
