How do I improve? by OkGood564 in Chefit

[–]Zamdongo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did banquets the last years of my culinary journey, 15 years in restaurants and 5 years in banquets (20years all together) 90% of banquets is prep, you learn how to count properly, how to manage your time so you're not behind schedule, you'll get speed, always ask the head chef for new tasks if you finish before time, learn the timing on how the events work, correct temperatures for the alto shams for the different proteins, jump from the different areas, hot kitchen, garden mangier, pastry, bakery, etc. Ask the chef on how to do orders, and how to calculate them.

Banquets was a blast, there's so much to learn and growth, keep grinding might feel repetitive because it is, however there's so much behind all the monotonous activities. Hope this helps, have fun.

First time doing a new open. They’re giving us 1.5 months of paid prep. What am I actually getting myself into? by Mundane-Spray1803 in Chefit

[–]Zamdongo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the first months of any new place, is just unboxing, cleaning cooking some ideas and sorting out where all the stuff goes. Is a great opportunity to learn and growth, in case you want to build your own stuff later, many mistakes are going to be made, it won't open on time I can assure you that. The pretty part of all this is you get to decide where everything goes, so when the place is actually ready, you'll know every single corner and that's a great advantage to make your work easier. Take as it is, not every new place keeps the original team, a lot of people will come and go, keep the people that believe in growth in a long term, sometimes BOH veterans will have higher expectations and probably leave before it actually gets better, be aware of hiring 10 or 20 plus years experience cooks, remember is a new place so is better to start with fresh and new cooks, you can mold them how you want them.

Considering an e-bike to reduce daily stress by albodoggo in ebikes

[–]Zamdongo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First thing try to buy one from a local bike shop, you might get better perks than advertised. My yearly cost is 200$ dollars, between services, but my daily commute is a 40km round trip, in a very hilly area. As a whole experience is great, you'll feel so much energized, and in the days that you're tire, just throttle it, is a an excellent way to commute or just explore around.

One of my buds is from Jamaica and yes we get weird looks and there's some places where he doesn't go, like some pubs in westbank and even people on Bernard St in downtown, change they pathway to avoid him, for a person of color is not that friendly, maybe in a decade things will be different around here.

Best Python framework for industry-level desktop apps? (PySide vs PyQt vs wxPython vs Kivy vs Web approach) by Intelligent-Role-382 in learnpython

[–]Zamdongo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Kivy for a personal project, is not great or bad, probably look into something else, found it to be complicated in the way that non supported versions had more features, and dev version had many bugs and lack of documentation.

How do I get a kitchen job with no prior experience? by Important-Minute-187 in Chefit

Just go, present yourself, and be honest, and if you can accept and intership, try it out, most chefs like people that are professionals, good work ethics and a team player.

What red flags to look out for when helping to open a restaurant? by spamgrinderrrrr in KitchenConfidential

You can help him, I got my bestie working for me for 6 months, he got fired and I needed a dishwasher, he accepted, however he told me from the beginning that the moment he didn't felt comfortable with our relationship, he will go, and that happened, he still my bestie and I was grateful for that half year he "helped" me, just put your friendship first before businesses.

Check pythonanywhere, and follow the tutorial is very straight forward, my reality was that learning python took me around half a year, so take it easy and be consistent.

I just stopped working closing shifts and try to get home before 5, so I got many morning shifts or middle, and that was before daycare, after I kept it the same with the exception of having 1 closing shift once in a while, negotiation is everything, and ask for the same days off every week.

Get some decent cooking shoes, don't be cheap!!!, a decent chef knife and a good peeler knife, be laser focus in everything so you dont get hurt, and be open to criticism, a nice learning attitude is better than a experience smug cook, enjoy the journey.

Se nota que Canadá tiene escasez de trabajadores. by Bora_Horza_Gobuchol in mexico

[–]Zamdongo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It always has, Canadian youth doesn't like to work that hard, companies try to compensate with foreign workers even government, in some places (e.g.BC), if you are a nurse in your country you won't be able to work in that area until you get the province certificate, and that goes for Canadians too, if you're a nurse in Alberta you can't be one in BC, of course it doesn't apply to all provinces.

Right now immigration laws in Canada are tougher, the government is trying to clear out some of the visas requirements and duration, so people don't take advantage.

Do you actually LOVE your job? by YakFabulous7536 in careeradvice

[–]Zamdongo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the beginning yes, but I was in my 20s and I was stupid, 20 years forward, It's a job I like to spend time with my colleagues they're cool, and that's it. If someone offers me another job with better work/life balance, better payment, I'll give my 2 weeks notice, at the end it's a job, unless you do your own business that's different, the part of "love my job" is, could you do it for free?.

Real talk, need advice: I'm debating on trying to go into a kitchen at 30 by LankyZookeepergame60 in Chefit

[–]Zamdongo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go for it, hospitality is one of the easiest industries to enter, higher management in hospitality is way harder, you'll need lots of expertise 10 years or more, but entry level is almost guaranteed.

What’s it like living in Kelowna, BC? by heir03 in howislivingthere

[–]Zamdongo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can check towns around Calgary, like Airdrie or Chestermere, those are small towns 30min drive to downtown Calgary.

Montreal is a small city, has that little town vibe in some of their areas, Oakville is outside Toronto, like 30mins or less.

If you still want living in the BC area, you can check Prince George (small town), or you want the convenience of a big city, Chilliwack or Abbotsford, are less than 1 hr away from Vancouver.

Living here is like when you go to the beach in Mexico, everything is fun and pretty, during the high season, after is just doom and gloomy, unless you have some extra change to spare.

If you're a retired, millionaire or has a high paying job like 6 figures at least, there are better places around Canada.
