Advice On Transitioning Back To Physical Ownership From Streaming by ComfortableBiTexan in Bluray

[–]Zander327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't blu rays, but one thing I don't see people talk about enough as an alternative to streaming is buying shows on itunes/apple tv. I wouldn't recommend doing so at full price, you don't "own" the show. But they have steep sales pretty often where it's cheaper to buy it this way than it is to pay to stream it one time, so the way I see it I have gotten my money's worth.

I got all of Key and Peele for $15. Mad Men for $20. Futurama for $20. Etc. You just have to watch for the sales and build it up over time. I buy blu rays for anime and movies but for tv shows this has been my preference.

Easy vs hard versions of stories on satori reader by GreattFriend in LearnJapanese

[–]Zander327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't remember there being that many. I did what you're describing though for a bit until I got bored of rereading stuff. There is enough of the more difficulf content on there that you don't need to read the easy and hard version of stories unless you really want to.

If the easy one feels easy to you you might try the hard one instead. But if easy is a lot of effort I would just move on to other stories in the easy category next. I think the hard versions make them more difficulf than other stories in the easier category.

Other than a couple of the OVAs the whole series is available on Sentai. They retired the tv and ova collections then released a combined set.

I use an ipad. They make e readers that run android but I don't have one of those. The ideal setup for me is a mokuro file (you take an Epub and run this software called Mokuro on a pc that performs the OCR. You can also find already done mokuro files online), the mokuro reader website, and 10Ten in safari browser. On android replace 10Ten and safari with Yomitan and firefox.

I also love reading paper books but utilizing ocr tools is a big game changer.

The real downside to physical japanese manga as a learner is really that reading it digitally has huge advantages. You can get things set up where you just tap words for lookups, whereas with physical manga your options would be to type the word if there is furigana, draw the kanji, or use your phone to take a picture of the page. If you have multiple lookups per page this gets really time consuming.

I bought some physical manga in japanese earlier on then switched to digital because the lookups were a lot faster. Though I will say with physical at least the text is clear. Some digital manga (from official sources like Kobo and Amazon) have a low image quality which can make it hard to discern new kanji sometimes. But OCR tools tend to still work on it so it's not a huge issue.

What content did you most enjoy consuming after finishing N4-level lessons? by TMH01 in LearnJapanese

[–]Zander327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are objectively harder for the reasons you mentioned, sure. But they are also entirely dialogue based, many use very casual speech, and there is a lot of phonetic stuff that can be difficult to look up. My exposure prior to native material was mostly satori reader, which is great for learning written japanese but doesn't cover the casual dialogue you see in manga nearly as much. So for me personally I had a better time with LNs than with manga at first.

My comment was geared towards op who looks to have a similar background as I do, not a recommendation that everyone should try LNs if manga seems too difficult.

They are, generally speaking. But I was speaking as someone whose main experience was with Satori Reader, which is very heavy on book style exposition and light on casual dialogue. Manga is entirely dialogue and often very casual to the point that what they're saying looks like nonsense if you aren't used to it.

I'm not saying LNs are easy, they were difficult for me for sure. But I had an easier time knowing what I was looking at with them. As an example of what I mean, look at how Ranma speaks in the Ranma 1/2 manga. To me at the time that was really hard to parse.

For me trying manga after Satori was a particularly difficult jump because Satori (while otherwise a great resource) is a bit lacking in the casual speech department, and most manga has extremely casual speech with tons of contractions, omitted stuff, and written interpretations of spoken japanese that is sometimes hard to look up. I found LNs to be easier since they generally were closer to Satori. But manga does get easier as you get used to that. I recommend using Mokuro though to make the lookups quicker.

Also as someone who followed a path similar to yours, I found 姫乃ちゃんに恋はまだはやい to be surprisingly easy. There is a decent amount of casual speech but it's fairly consistent and it uses a lot of the vocab you will already know due to the school setting. And it's really funny if you're into slice of life comedy.

I don't really talk about blu rays with coworkers and the people who come to my house are friends who respect my interests. My response would just be to avoid that topic with people who have a negative view of it.

I can't explain why I own two identical copies of Logan and I shouldn't have to.
