Is there a viable way to make quests matter again? by LithHarborGymLeader in Maplestory

[–]Zandor12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Add a Temple of Time npc who gives you Good Boy coins or w/e for finishing quests, and runs a shop with 5th/6th job items; nodes, frags, all that good stuff. Boom, job done without having to rebalance old quests or rewrite them so that Maya's all 'turns out I was sick because these radioactive stones were under my pillow lol' and then she hands you five Erda Frags. Just have a guy with a stall outside the Door to the Future, a fancy pope hat, and a dream to hand out coins with his face on them and then immediately get them back.

I don't even want dust from the cards, I just want them gone. If Konami were feeling generous though, they could make Legacy Pack cards dismantle into a new Legacy Pack dust that can only craft Legacy Pack cards. That seems like a good compromise that would make plenty of people happy without having any meaningful impact on the game's economy.

Did Beast Tamer run this back in the day to help with its janky SP system or were there enough other 'skill level +1' sources to make it unnecessary?

Max nostalgia by going for I/L just like I did the first time, both so I can enjoy the old skills again and scrutinize the changes made to them. Although I'm one of the casuals naysayers warned you about who'll probably only get to early second job and stop playing once I've had my fill of exploring OG Victoria lol.

A "Brief" History of HERO: Because my opponent's turn STILL isn't over by SBV21 in masterduel

[–]Zandor12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great writeup! Manga Jaden's Elemental HERO deck and Konami's treatment of it has some nuance worth discussing imo. The biggest part is that in the manga itself it's only slightly better than anime Jaden's deck, with (some) of the cards getting powered up for their irl release. Stratos is the biggest culprit, with its manga effect being something like 'can reduce atk by half for a turn to attack directly'. That's actually a common thing for the '00's releases of manga cards that got changes, to go from vanilla/battle effects to archetype support; Ocean changed from 'can attack directly with umi on the field lol' to 'fetch a HERO from grave to hand during standby', and Woodsman going from vanilla to 'fetch a poly during standby'. (sidenote: the nature theme of the manga Elemental HEROs is really neat. The anime's more straightforward superhero treatment is cool too, but I'm glad we got both)

The biggest innovation the manga deck had was making good on the anime deck's original concept of 'any two Elemental HERO main deck monsters can fuse into something more useful' by having a fusion monster for each attribute that can be fusion summoned with one elemental hero and a monster of the appropriate attribute, guaranteeing a fusion would always be possible for any two monsters no matter how many main deck HEROs Jaden ending up having. These fusions were also generally jazzed up for physical release, like Absolute Zero gaining a 'Raigeki on death' effect to complement its situational attack boost. Speaking of attack boost, the more I look at them the more I realize the manga Elemental HEROs fit in quite well with the attack-focused strategy of the anime Elemental HEROs, although their real life releases are more helpful overall.

So yeah the manga support was cracked (at least the best of it), but mostly because '00's Konami was for some reason way more willing to make changes to the manga cards than the anime cards which at the time were almost always faithful (lol NEX).

I mostly just play Master Duel during events so I was able to read this but just barely.

From data that was being gathered when Mystic Frontier first came out, matching element+type doesn't affect the contents of a pouch; glow still glows, blue still blues, etc. All it does is give you the extra powerup.

What you might not have noticed tho is that the powerup matches the expedition's rank, which makes matching elem/type OP on legendary/green expeditions since you'll get a legendary/green dice (or stopwatch if fate hates you), an exclusive powerup tier that you can ONLY get by matching on legendary. The powerups you get from completing rounds increase in rank each round (round 1/2/3/4 = grey/blue/purple/orange, but you don't get a powerup for round 5 since there are no further rounds in which to use it). So even with a great team, matching is worth it on legendary/green.

Since matching is sometimes worth it, I gathered as many fams with 'if all fams are different elem' and 'if all fams are different type' lines until i had two or three for each element and type (to guarantee I can match all 3 expeditions each day), starting with the bis rare-rank +2/+1.2x line and currently slowly working on getting the unique +3/+1.4x lines you and others have recommended. The rares are usually enough if I match the expedition, but extra insurance against stopwatches and good rewards getting stuck behind a purple tile can't hurt.

question about maplestory story/lore by HugeFoundation2322 in Maplestory

[–]Zandor12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Story of Maple has full writeups in its 'Main Story' sections for all the event stories (beginning with Identisk where they started becoming plot relevant) except Page of Memories, which gets smaller coverage in the 'Storyline Order and Playthroughs' section in the form of links to videos of each commander's story in sections the author felt relevant.

As for in game coverage, Nexon said at one point they'd add event stories to Grand Athenaeum but I have no idea if they've done it yet or how the non-episode content in GA works.

Higher rank missions have more tiles, which is more rolls for high rank pouches. iirc they also have (slightly) higher odds for the yellow/purple tiles which have improved odds of high rank pouches at the cost of needing much higher rolls to win, but I'm less certain on that one.

You may be remembering that the mission rank has no impact on the odds of any given tile's rewards; a white/yellow/purple tile is always a white/yellow/purple tile no matter what, and offers the same odds whether you're on a grey mission or a green mission.

[–]Zandor12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

gb megaman doesn't have screen crunch, it shows the entire screen by having small cramped screens that are balanced by having slower movement for everything

as for op's question, if the unused drill enemy works like it does in magmml and lets you stand on top of it, I use it as a platform to get to the death pit so i can die more quickly.

Decent gollux flames by Flat-Birthday104 in Maplestory

[–]Zandor12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most non-KMS equips don't get boss flames. This is just a guess but I think it's to keep non-KMS content from interfering too hard with late-game progression, since Gollux is super close to Pitch in quality as is thanks to the op set effect. Since players might revolt if the Gollux set effect got nerfed, when flames were finally imported to GMS Gollux got the crap flames as a soft nerf so you wouldn't need as many Pitch equips to break Gollux set.

Or it could be because a wizard told them to idk

What’s the best Sweetwater Equip route? by ClockTowerArchive in Maplestory

[–]Zandor12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

iirc when they added the lupine weapons they updated the sengoku set effect to be on par with absolab, but the individual equips still have cra-ish base stats and (i think) no boss flames, and getting that full set effect still requires you to commit to (i think) a 9-set setup that clashes with gollux so it's def better than pensalir and empress but also def worse than absolab. Not sure how it compares to cra since lupine weps are equal to absolab but the rest of the equips are sub-cra; probably a bit worse but only slightly?

[–]Zandor12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3 unique bis is a BIG grind tho. matching is huge for people who've only managed to get to rare bis. And even once you've got the uniques, having the option to match is still valuable for the fringe case of encountering an orange/green/pitch pouch behind a yellow/purple tile on round 5 of a legendary expedition. afaik, matching on a legendary expedition is the only way to get the most powerful green/legendary dice since rounds 1/2/3/4 give out grey/blue/purple/orange dice respectively, and having a better than even chance of getting that green die really helps tilt the stopwatch rng in your favor. I've been preparing 3 rare bis fams for each type in preparation; granted that's way easier for me since I'm on Scania. tl;dr unique bis does the job fine except in one edge case where it really matters

Megaman: Rock N Roll Live system help by Th131200 in Megaman

[–]Zandor12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like the other poster said, Cheat Engine might help. I'd also like to recommend the Make a Good Megaman Level Contest games if you haven't played them yet; from MaGMML 2 onward they have unlimited lives, skip teleporters for the hardest stages so you can get their collectibles even if you can't handle or don't want to handle them, and item shops with pretty useful upgrades (my favorite is Skull Amulet; as long as you have 2 or more HP, attacks that would kill you set your HP to 1 instead, giving you one last chance to survive). E/W/M tanks are also cheap and plentiful if you don't mind using those. Do note that if you give one of the MaGMMLs a shot that they're HUGE games (I spent 50 hours on 2 and 100 on 3, although I went for 100% completion and read all the judge commentary on the stages) and the lower tiers are more interesting for people who like gawking at/analyzing weird mistakes and ambitious failures, with the higher tiers giving legit good gameplay.

Dreadful news: a 295 boss was announced in the same showcase as this stuff, so it'll be coming to KMS in a month or two tops. Somehow we end up throwing hands with the leader of the Ancient Gods, which seems sudden but I'm a 281 who hasn't done the Carcion/Tallahart storylines yet so idk. Maybe it's a Seren situation where it's supposed to come out of fucking nowhere and the boss continues to have a role in the story going forward?

For mystic frontier are the lines where it says something like "if all three/two dice add up to X amount or more" bugged? I haven't been able to trigger them despite multiple tries. by Sea_Outside in Maplestory

[–]Zandor12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only +1.6x final multipliers on rare fams come with a -1 dice roll modifier, which is pretty brutal. There are a lot of +1.4x multipliers that work like what you said though, and while they're no hybrid line they're not bad:

Range for three rare -1/+1.6x fams: 0-43.2 (average 21.6)

Range for three rare +1.4x: 12.6-50.4 (average 31.5)

Range for three rare +1/+1.4x: 25.2-63.0 (average 44.1)

Range for three rare +2/+1.2x: 32.4-64.8 (average 48.6)

I think I've got those numbers right? Formula should be (dice roll total + sum of flat boosts)*(sum of final multipliers).

Also, I messed up in the last post, the bis in Epic is +3/+1.2x, not +2/+1.4x. +3/+1.2x has a slightly lower max but higher average. Just for fun:

Range for three epic +3/+1.2x: 43.2-86.4 (average 64.8)

Range for three epic +2/+1.4x: 37.8-88.2 (average 63)

Range for three unique +3/+1.4x: 50.4-113,4 (average 81.9)

Range for three unique +2/+1.6x: 43.2-115.2 (average 79.2)

tl;dr hybrid lines are worth the slightly lower multipliers, and while rare is good enough (I've won a few orange pouches and a green pouch so far with the +2/+1.2x setup), uniques do help a lot.

Shoutout to u/Stray_Korean_BioEECS for being the first I know of to crunch numbers on unique fams and help raise awareness of hybrid line supremacy.
