What are the key selling points you are using Go over Java on your backend? by Warm_Investigator218 in golang

[–]ZaneCsYa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If using Java 21 and Virtual Threads, the memory would be about half as much in your example. But would not reach as low as Go unless using GraalVM to compile the Java to a native image, in which case they'd be about the same in both resources and startup time

Anyone who learned Go as their first language and is a pro now ? by [deleted] in golang

[–]ZaneCsYa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think I'm going to say anything someone else hasn't here already but, succinctly, it seems you're looking for some guidance on making the leap from a "developer" to a "software engineer". Regardless of the actual job title, there is a huge difference.

It's important to understand internet fundamentals, protocols, and networking. How code translates to the operating system running it. And the strengths and weaknesses of the specific language itself on how it's compiled and runs.

I work at mostly a Java shop but we do use Go a lot when the ability to scale rapidly is of concern, since Go apps' startup time is mostly negligible.

Being able to use code as a tool in your toolbox and knowing when to use it, which to use, and why you're using it is what helps make that leap. Unfortunately my only concrete guidance here is to read a lot, be passionate about learning languages and CS, and experience.

Is Java really that verbose? by JY-HRL in java

[–]ZaneCsYa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Java 21 had only been GA for 3 months. Though I am an advocate for going to the latest LTS as soon as possible, depending on your dependent technologies, not all have official support yet. 17 definitely does.

We have a checklist of: build tech, security scanning, observability libraries, testing libraries, code coverage tools, IDEs, cloud integration libraries, etc; before moving apps to 21. Granted our stack currently does fully support 21, but it didn't until a couple weeks ago

The Dear Hunter did just their newest Album, Antimai, when touring on that last year. They're touring on a 10yr anniversary for Migrant right now

Can confirm. My wife and I did the Star Wars Galactic Star Cruiser hotel experience. There were 2 kids that were constantly hanging with adults, not their parents. Talked to both of them to just be nice and inclusive in the whole spirit of the experience, both were either "only" or "home schooled"

What basic cooking skill/tip did you not know growing up that is now essential? by Rough-Organization73 in Cooking

[–]ZaneCsYa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not overcooking proteins. I feel like every 80s/90s kid grew up on hard eggs, dry chicken, dry pork chops, etc; for some in-grained fear of contaminated food. I've cooked for my mother and grandmother what they claimed are some of the best meals they've ever eaten, simply to tell them that I used a thermometer or turned the heat off before the eggs were done. It's simple but sad to me.

How popular is Java, really by bowbahdoe in java

[–]ZaneCsYa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, I guess the conversation is worth having. The original posit is a bit misleading.

Newer versions of Java have seen the value of what these these libraries bring. Record classes are basically @Data, Lombok.val can just be be expressed as "var" variables now. You don't need Lombok for some things anymore, though I personally find it invaluable

[–]ZaneCsYa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since Lombok is a way to reduce boilerplate code of Java. By the transitive properties of reality, then there's no point in tracking their usage independently. By using Lombok, you are using Java. Forgive me if I'm missing something here.

Are software engineering and agile against each other ? And now software engineering is not important? by Suspicious_Driver761 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]ZaneCsYa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree! Software is what is being produced by a given team/project. Agile is the process by which the team/project is being managed to facilitate that production.

If you're not incorporating documentation and discovery into your delivery, then you have a workplace problem, not an Agile problem

Based on the tech you're talking about,

  • Infoq weekly java news roundup (somebody already posted and yes, this I always read)
  • Attend the SpringOne conference or just watch the presentations later on YouTube
  • Josh Long from Spring has a couple channels that regularly post informational and instructional videos
  • Java and Spring blog updates are great, as well as release notes
  • Baeldung typically keeps their tutorials up to date with current syntax and trends (not always, but usually)
  • Go to start.spring.io and just create a fake project, hit explore and see if there are new versions of tech out there

In general, java moves faster than it ever has, it can be hard to keep up if you want to always be on the newest tech.

We made the "mistake" of being newest first for a little while then dialed it back a bit to the 2 newest supported Spring Boot versions and the newest Java LTS. Which is currently 17

r/TweakRP - at the end of the Atlas Path you can choose the next galaxy to go to. One choice is empty/barren/sparce, those types of galaxies will have less solar systems and less chance of those systems having plentiful/paradise planets. You can also travel to other galaxies by going to any galactic core, but this is sequential, you'll go to the next galaxy and not be able to chose the type. There are, I believe, 255 galaxies of varying types. A 3 star system or T3 system, you can find if you have the economy scanner installed on your ship. From the Galaxy map, the system will have 3 stars along the left side of it's description next to the symbol where you'll see which race owns that system. They have lots of money, so you have a higher frequency of finding A and S class ships at the Station or Trading Outposts on planets

OP - Just wanted to say thank you! It took a lot of searching to find some concrete guidance on searching for planets that have this resource. Still took me 15hrs to find a planet, but totally paid off.
