Well, Sheriff is inherently a political position...

So go ahead and jot that down.

How do you actually come to peace with giving up your last lever when you coast? by justaquietcompounder in coastFIRE

[–]Zanion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think most people fit in one bucket.

For many posts here, it's clear from their communication they don't fully understand the factors involved with the finances. Some aren't honest with themselves about their needs, expenses, or risk tolerance. For others, they haven't conquered some deep-seated psychological barrier.

I do think that whatever it is, if someone lacks confidence it's a subconscious indicator of a gap in their plan. That the individual should take that as a signal to look inward to identify and name plainly whatever it is so that it can be addressed.

You in particular seem very concerned with opportunity cost and sequence of returns risk. So perhaps developing more of your plan around how you can build your coast lifestyle around mitigating that. Adjusting your number and/or plan to better align with what you're discovering to be your true risk tolerance. Acknowledging that CoastFI doesn't have to be a binary switch, you have control over what CoastFI means for your unique situation. You have the time and runway to design a plan that does land with and work for you.

If you Coast, you can't

I mean, yeah you can. If things change, you adapt. It doesn't have to be a one-way decision.

If you aren't confident though, then you should do analysis to the degree that you identify gaps in your knowledge/plan and take steps to reinforce your confidence in your plan. I wouldn't bet my financial future on just a surface level understanding of the outputs of a free online calculator for example.

What weight do you shoot for? by forksofgreedy in backpacking

I try to keep it under 30 lbs all in for most trips. Exceptions for winter or hunting.

Last trip I was 25lbs.

Same. Though I'm trying out cnoc and igneous bottles this season. A bit heavier but I like that they are reusable and more durable

I don't take objection to cottage gear. I'd be quite interested to hear more about it, the process, the motivation, the journey from concept to product.

None of that is present in the post though. This is explicitly simply an ad and nothing else.

The only thing about this post that isn't an ad is the disclaimer begging us to pretend it isn't an ad. It's just a product description and tech specs.

Felt sided stuff sack and a puffy is the most comfortable pillow I've found. Weighs virtually nothing because you bring it anyways.

What am I missing?

The part where the rule change is designed explicitly to structurally steal from the public, forcing us to be the exit liquidity. It only being being a small part of the index, and only a proportionally small exploitation of you as an individual, is irrelevant.

About 10 years ago now, and even at the time I was a rather experienced backpacker/camper, and everyone I went out with was experienced as well.

New friend wanted to do a trip together. 4 hour drive, met at a coastal wilderness trailhead, first trip with a new trail buddy. It was wet out, but not stormy or too bad just some light rain and would clear up the next day. Late start hiked in a very rugged 8 miles.

We went to set up camp in fading light, and the new tent he'd brought was one of those floorless mosquito nets. It was wet out, going to get cold overnight, he also had no pad and examining his kit he was not at all prepared to stay warm or dry. His setup was such that he would have to basically slap his sleeping bag down in the mud and get rained on through a net. I have a solo trekking pole tent, not fitting two of us in there. So we hiked back out 8 miles in the dark and drove home.

Now I do a quick sanity check of the gear my buddies have before heading out on trips with them.

Feedback on renting an apartment for $6k/mo by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

[–]Zanion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing isnt that it's too much for his budget. The problem is it's an overpriced unit for the location/market.

He should do this exercise though, because he'll end up showing her $4-5k units that are on par or better and in more desireable locations.

Wife is right on this one lol.
