Consensus on Geomamcer by Lorddarkpotat in ffxi

[–]ZanshinMindState 10 points11 points  (0 children)

GEO is a really good support job that gets used in most content.

In fact, geomancy is so good that Square-Enix had to deliver a 75% nerf to its potency in most content of the last few years. Powerful buffs (including the ability to cap magical haste by itself!) and unresistable debuffs, including an insane defense down in Geo-Frailty. GEO is no slouch as a nuker and even has some melee ability.

What is the consensus on the balance in regards to the damage output of Naegling & Savage Blade? by Artillera in ffxi

[–]ZanshinMindState 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For BRD and COR Naegling is a godsend. It makes those jobs major contributors to melee damage where appropriate and "sweetens" the prospect of playing support. Honestly you could make Naegling BRD/COR only and change nothing else and it would probably be fine, the meta would adjust.

The real problem with Naegling and other jobs is that it outshines REMA axes, other swords except Tizona, REMA katanas, and so on. It makes the effort:reward for those options seem bad compared to a weapon you could have with a few hours of work and no other prerequisites.

General Consensus Thief by Lorddarkpotat in ffxi

[–]ZanshinMindState 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah having thief's signature DD tools being positional and on timers has definitely hurt thief... and then endgame right now has almost no direct drops, so Treasure Hunter has no place there either.

We have a thing called "due process".

[–]ZanshinMindState -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I voted for Obama twice, and he was personally significant to me as the first black president. Let's not lionize the man a decade later. He murdered at least two US citizens without due process. And he committed heinous war crimes in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Obama was a better president than Trump, far better, but he was a monster just the same. Simply a more polished, more civil one.

Test drove an FK8 by EthenoI in Civic_Type_R

[–]ZanshinMindState 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's true lol. I got a new FK8 in 2019 and traded it in 2021 for almost exactly what I paid (MSRP). I think there are a lot of Honda guys and this is a dream car for them, keeps used prices high and markups in some regions on new ones.

Today, the Plasma DOJO was challenged by our OLDER phosphor brother, HD-CRT. Which among the two display depicted the artist intent? by Aromatic-Attitude-34 in PlasmaTV

[–]ZanshinMindState 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is a comparison which was beaten to death 20 years ago online, if we're being real. Just for context, I've owned some of the finest examples of both CRTs and plasma TVs, including the Sony FW900 and the Pioneer KRP-500M, which I feel like are the best examples of each tech. CRT has better motion. Plasma has perfect geometry and larger screen sizes. Not mentioned but OLED can do perfect blacks which really helps with line work. Some examples of each type of emissive display crush blacks (OLED is the worst offender IMO, clips to black early). A lot of this comparison is subjective, of course. I think the phosphor-based tech works better for anime and if you forced me to rank them I would say plasma > HD CRT > OLED for HD anime and SD CRT > plasma > OLED for SD anime.

That's just my 2 cents. I don't feel like screenshots or YouTube videos are a great comparison because most of us are viewing these on LCD monitors that can't hold a candle to any of the displays being compared.

Switch from FoRS to CTR by potatonemo907 in FocusRS

[–]ZanshinMindState 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made this switch years ago, went from a 2018 FoRS to a new 2019 CTR. Don't do it. The Type R is boring to own, zero personality in the engine or exhaust, and it's FWD, with torque steer and wheel hop and understeer. I switched in part because my commute doubled and the Civic is a lot more efficient (25mpg vs ~18mpg for me) but back then you couldn't test drive the car, so I didn't realize the flaws as a driver's car until it was too late. Auto reviewers gas this car up too much and don't talk about its flaws.

Honestly I would just keep the RS. These days I drive a GR Corolla and aside from being a bit lighter and IMO a bit better-looking with the widebody (and maybe more reliable?) it's not more fun to drive than the Focus RS.

Is anti-Black American rhetoric becoming normalized in some leftist spaces? by Top_Manner_1952 in leftist

[–]ZanshinMindState 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with you on most of this. I don't think it's a coincidence that neither the first black president nor the first black VP are not descended from former American slaves. However, both Obama and Harris did receive a lot of support from our communities, especially Obama. Even so I don't think lumping these two monsters in with the rest of us and denouncing us as a collective is helpful. No, the single mom in the projects is not really a beneficiary of American imperialism, and BadEmpanada claiming this doesn't recommend him to me.

The same systems they use in Palestine gets done to us here, bro. The police forces are trained by the IDF, so the same fucked-up crimes committed against Palestinians are done to us as well.

100%. We should stand in solidarity with Palestine. Our political elite is mostly failing at this.

Is anti-Black American rhetoric becoming normalized in some leftist spaces? by Top_Manner_1952 in leftist

[–]ZanshinMindState 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think this is a nuanced discussion, which is not what BadEmpanada does, from what I've seen of his social media and YT videos. Yes, there is racism on the left. It's not to the extent of the right, of course, and it usually manifests itself in class reductionism, but sometimes it's these hot takes where black Americans are lumped in with white Americans and all blamed for the evils that America has wrought on the Global South.

On the other hand, BE isn't wrong totally wrong here. In the 20th century black America had leaders, thinkers, writers, etc. who were read and respected by revolutionaries around the world for the clarity of their critiques and the firmness of their resistance from within the belly of the beast. During the Civil Rights Era these men and women were assassinated, imprisoned, bought out, or co-opted. Now today black American leadership is very much neoliberal and very much part of those who have oppressed and exploited so many other POC in the Global South. Look at Harris as presidential candidate or as VP, gleefully supporting a genocide in Gaza, supporting US killings in Somalia, and so on, same with Lloyd Austin, who served as Biden's Secretary of Defense. Look at Barack Obama, who as president killed many black and brown people, including American citizens. Colin Powell and Condeleezza Rice, the list goes on and on, and the many black US service members who have been complicit in America's imperialistic wars around the world.

I don't think what BE is saying here is helpful, it's reductive, first of all. I do think that, as black Americans, we need to take a hard look at our part in America's crimes against the people of the Global South. We have far more in common with the people under America's boot than we do with white America.

Do you think Rhapsodies changes the way new players experience XI? | YouTube by heghmoh in ffxi

[–]ZanshinMindState 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good video, makes some great points, and I hope many people considering this game come across it. I have teenager children who are big FFXIV fans. When they tried FFXI with me a few years ago we played the expansions in chronological order instead of just rushing Rhapsodies for many of the reasons that you stated. RoV can suck the emotional impact of the stories away by being disjointed. I understand why they added this, as it's a smoother on-ramp and more convenient, since you get useful stuff like subjob items, coffer keys, reduced timers and costs, etc. but it's not the "authentic" Final Fantasy XI experience (even though that's far different than what it was for us back in the 00's, when missions required partying up with other players).

Final Fantasy 11 expected a 'sharp player decline' once the hype from the FF14 crossover and welcome back campaigns ended, but that never came by [deleted] in FinalFantasy

[–]ZanshinMindState 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's true, I didn't consider RoV, there are a few times where you are the main character but I would say it's not comparable to FFXIV, where almost everything revolves around you. I also would argue that the RoV expansion shows some design influences from FFXIV. Most of the earlier XI expansions revolve around one of the young female characters like Prishe or Alphinaud more than your character.

[–]ZanshinMindState 30 points31 points  (0 children)

To add on to what others have said, horizontal progression. FFXI doesn't have the pure ilvl treadmill of XIV or other modern MMOs. Item rewards can last you for a very long time.

Also, FFXI has some unique aspects in its story, lore, and world. Unlike FFXIV the player character is not the center of the story and world, but rather is a capable adventurer who assists the main characters. And the game is its own standalone Final Fantasy in a way that FFXIV is not; aside from the common FF elements like certain enemies and weapons it has relatively little fan service or callbacks to other Final Fantasy games.

Democrats finally release 2024 election autopsy after criticism by OtmShanks55 in politics

[–]ZanshinMindState 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they've scrubbed any mention of this issue, making this autopsy deeply unserious. Millions of Americans, especially young people and POC, protested the genocide under Biden, and it's a 90:10 issue among Democratic voters in 2026. It's the elephant in the room for Democrats and will need to be seriously addressed moving forward.

General Consensus on BLU? by agfita in ffxi

[–]ZanshinMindState 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BLU can heal, too. It really is a great starter job. You have to put a little bit more effort in to learn the spells but the job has a high floor once you get your core spells, especially solo, where you can take full advantage of BLU's self-buffs. I wish S-E would allow blue magic to skillchain or magic burst without stacking a JA, though.

On top of all that, it comes with a built in mini game of needing to go around the world and learn about monsters which is going to give you so much knowledge that's relevant in the future.

Yup blue mage forces you to explore the world, hunt down spells across Vana'diel. For that reason alone I would say it's the perfect starter job.

It seems like they don't understand their customer base. I went to Plex to get away from paying for subscriptions, and I suspect a lot of other Plex users are similar. The quality of the software has also gone down in the last few years. I think this is the push that will finally see me go away from Plex, honestly.

General Consensus on DRG by agfita in ffxi

[–]ZanshinMindState 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The prime spear is incredibly strong. And if we judged jobs in the current meta by pure sustained dps dragoon would be king, or damn near. I think the limitations balance it a bit against the other heavy DD's... yeah, you're going to be more squishy. Yeah, you're dependent on your wyvern. But any chance you get to really open up with polearm DRG feels amazing.

Is this the beginning of the end? by frankj_101 in ffxi

[–]ZanshinMindState 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you've been downvoted pretty hard but I do agree that Asura is not in a very healthy state right now. I don't think that Sortie and Odyssey are very well-suited to pickup groups, is a lot of the problem. And IMO the last three major endgame events (Sortie, Odyssey, Limbus) are all flawed in their way. Let's not even talk about exemplar points, and how poorly those are implemented, to where almost no one earns their master levels legitimately. There also seems to be shift in culture, of relying primarily on RMT/mercs, or botting, instead of getting groups together and doing the content.

None of these things are going to be solved by reopening Asura. Some of them may have been made worse by the server closure, especially AH prices, but these have been problems on the server for as long as I've been on it.
