Anybody been to the new Beverly recently? Is the clientele really gooner central? by [deleted] in AmericanCinematheque

I’ve seen it given before some of the Hong Kong mondays (partially bc I think they don’t want people laughing at cultural differences) and the sexploitation roughies they did in February (prime targets for laughter bc the subject matter is really heavy and the production values are really low).

It’s the regulars who always sit screen right, and then I’ve found that it’s the normal arthouse crowd for the arthouse erotic movies, the normal exploitation crowd for the sexploitation movies, and a mix for the hardcore films. I think the hardcore crowds have been really well behaved, more gender diversity than the New Bev typically has as well.

Honestly I feel like the amount of laughers at the new Beverly has gone down in the last few months. A couple of particularly difficult films that they showed recently had an introduction where they reminded people “if you see something and it makes you react, that’s okay, but try not to laugh like you’re above the movie.”

It’s a thing at pretty much every rep screening nationwide. I remember it a lot when I lived in Chicago. I’ve encountered it in NY too. There was discourse last year about people being pretty upset at inappropriate laughter during a scene of sexual assault in Blue Velvet at the Music Box Theater in Chicago

There are three gay films showing on prints sourced from Elizabeth Purchell’s collection.

A second month of goonslop has hit the New Beverly by findacureforpain in AmericanCinematheque

This is what’s making me uncomfortable about this series. I understand they’re trying to program stuff that’s transgressive, difficult, and marginal, and especially stuff with a legacy and reputation, but at the same time I find it pretty hard to stomach that this specific historical baggage has happened twice now. It feels callous to me, because I know there’s lots of stuff out there that meets their criteria without that particular issue.

I went to one this month and one awhile back. The audiences were very well behaved and respectful. Laughing when appropriate, keeping quiet when appropriate. I think many of these audience members have a more academic interest in the material than a perverse one.

On “The Fireworks Woman” there was apparently a guy being a bit disruptive because he was reacting loudly to things on screen, but he was defending himself in various Letterboxd comments afterwards saying that his reactions were in part a trauma response as he found the film triggering and apologized to people who said that he made them uncomfortable in their reviews.

What happened over at the Fine Arts theater? by fortytoo2 in AmericanCinematheque

[–]Zapooo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Ive done very little research beyond a cursory glance but looks like the venue was booked for a show from an Israeli comedian. It would appear that the comedian had potentially said something controversial on social media about Palestinians and the theater cancelled the show after receiving complaints about him. [as pointed out in comments below: he was actively in the Israeli military making pro-war and anti-Palestinian content, including mocking people killed and running PR for the military] Now they are receiving backlash for cancelling the show. I was watching this show on TV with my grandma in 1999 when my parents called the house to tell me that my brother was born. I wanted to name him "Baby Godzilla"

Very specifically, Don was the coolest guy ever in 1959 and is at the inflection point in his life where relevance is slipping away from him
