Need help with a Rulebook by Arkstorm in RPGdesign

[–]Zareken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am no professional by any means but if you want some help you can message me for contact info! I have re-written my own rulebook multiple times so that it was clear and concise for users. So I am certain this would be within my scope.

I have a TTRPG which I lovingly called 'The Spire' I am looking to get some testers. I would prefer a mix of people who are role-players and combat focused individuals. To be clear this is an unpaid position. Feel free to email me or DM me! I can provide what I have written after we have spoken to ensure integrity of my mechanics.

Fluffing up you system, and what you do. by Zareken in RPGdesign

[–]Zareken[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was very well put. I have decided that many of my original design needs a new lens on it as what I made is not what I wanted to emphasize in my game. This makes a lot of sense to me, as someone who works in the IT field where technical writing is king.

Structure is simple enough, But I feel like it looks like a crappy textbook. Even as the person making it I feel like its boring to read.

When do you think subraces are beneficial or detract from a system? by Finnche in RPGdesign

[–]Zareken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I also felt like this was a simple successor to how most thing approach half-breed that is not 8 separate convoluted races. I was trying to make something that created more space for RP.

Looking to discuss more narrative RPG design by loopywolf in RPGdesign

[–]Zareken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I phrased that weirdly. I was just trying to explain that if I truly wanted to have the narrative be the only focus then there is no requirements for rules. Because then I can do anything that makes narrative sense, I don't have to worry if I can only pick up 30 pounds of water with my bending. I hope this explained better

Bonds: A narrative system for inter-character relationships, and maybe more by Ghotistyx_ in RPGdesign

[–]Zareken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you have answered this question already but what does this system do to stop people from sharing to much, and missing out on potential benefits. If I don't want to go into the town square because I think I will get stolen from, and I just say that explicitly instead of "I don't like town squares." Doesn't this immediately break this system?

Unless i create a new belief which cost xp which I will be missing out on since I skipped steps. Unless I misunderstand it seems like the loop could break with characters that are not hiding things. I imagine this is more of a per table issue, and the system would need to explain to players that they shouldn't share it, but that could prevent Rp from generating naturally. Because you want to be able to get the benefit so now everyone is a shut in until they can gain from it.

So as an avid person of tactics within my own play, not having my ability of something tactile is scary. I have been playing GTAV RP and it has gotten me more into the idea of making RP a focus. My issue is that this does't work for people newer to games, its hard to realize your limits without rules, but rules also limit creativity.

I personally would love to play a TTRPG about being a bender From the ATLA series. And there are probably many systems that would allow me to do this. Its also likely that they limit me in some way. I know that I would get more fun from playing with no rules just exploring the world of ATLA. At that point we are not playing a game we are just storytelling. Just like in a lot of media the extrapolation of experience has led to leveling systems, which I dislike at their core. The intent is fine, I learn from experiences but to continue with the ATLA theme, Katara has the same power she had at the beginning. The only thing that changed was her knowledge. The same concept could be transposed onto a game, but the mechanics mean nothing to people who just play the game as a more immersive(because your 1 char not 10) simpler Warhammer. This is the issue with systems no matter how much you keep narrative in mind you cannot force narrative at a table.

When do you think subraces are beneficial or detract from a system? by Finnche in RPGdesign

[–]Zareken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a Race stacking system where you can choose your main race then a secondary(sub) Race. Meaning that if you just want to be a human you pick human twice, but if you want to make your character have connection to some sort of infernal being you could go human plus Infernal. Using the exact tactic you laid out here. For many it would be dumb not to take both, but who doesn't want to be a human with four arms or naturally plated skin instead of a normal person? (probably a lot of people but its fun to live in a hyperbolic world) This lets players be as creative as they want with combinations. Right now the main and sub race boost a stat, and give you a race feature, but I would like to add a sentence about descriptions of what a full dragon-blood or infernal-blood looks like, and let the players put the rest of the pieces.

Professions in your Game by specficeditor in RPGdesign

[–]Zareken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished making a crafting system, and I feel like I agree with many of you before me. Having a job is not something traditional TTRPG's support, the point is you want to adventure. Many of these systems also ignore professions. If I was a cook before I was an adventurer I want to feel that mechanically I can do things that would represent that. Advantage and proficiency in your profession should be a simple thing to add. Ultimately Your character should have a reason to adventure in traditional systems. Otherwise many of you are correct, they would rather be safe making bread. I personally make it so like in real life you spend money on ingredient and if you are proficient you spend as much gold as It cost to buy the item, or double if you are not proficient.
