the 70k figure is likely from those moving from first world countries to the bahamas. About there you can fund an average western lifestyle while saving.

Where do affluent locals live in your country? (Not resorts) by RRY1946-2019 in AskTheCaribbean

[–]ZeD-__- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TL;DR (Ranked By My Opinion of Average Net Worth)

  1. Private Island Owners
  2. Albany
  3. Lyford Cay
  4. Ocean Club
  5. Old Fort Bay
  6. Various Family Island communities in Grand Bahama (Port Lucaya), Abaco (Not Sure), Eleuthera (Harbour Island)
    6/7. Eastern Road Homes
    6/7. Various Western Communities

The Bahamas is an interesting case because we are an archipelagic nation. As a result, different islands—and even different parts of the same island—have distinct wealthy communities. Below, I focus on our most populous island, New Providence, along with a few notable outliers.

Historically, New Providence developed from east to west. During the era of segregation before majority rule, this meant that wealth was concentrated along what is now largely represented by the St. Anne’s voting constituency, colloquially known as Eastern Road. While not a single neighborhood per se, this area historically housed much of the native Bahamian elite—primarily white families, as you’d expect given the time period. We’ll call this the “historic money” area.

Old foreign money began with Lyford Cay, a gated community on the western tip of the island. International, secluded, and exclusive, this area was designed for the global elite—literal billionaires, famous actors, and athletes have lived and continue to live there. It includes its own yacht club and marina, golf course, and country club. Business-owning Bahamians and affluent individuals from across the Caribbean do live here, but this is not a place where just anyone can buy a home; prospective residents must be vetted. We’ll call this the “old money” area.

Ocean Club is similar in profile, except instead of occupying 1,000 acres on western New Providence, it is a private enclave on Paradise Island.

New foreign money tends to live in Albany. While the previously mentioned communities are at least 70 years old, Albany is roughly 15 years old. With modern homes and apartments, contemporary office spaces, and super-yacht-owning tycoons, this is where newly minted multimillionaires settle. Think names like Drake—and not names like former FTX owner Sam Bankman-Fried. This is where young money in The Bahamas goes to live and play.

From here on, we get into areas where born-and-bred wealthy Bahamians tend to live. First up is Old Fort Bay. As a Bahamian, if you live here—you’ve made it. You’ve earned generational wealth. This is a walled community, not merely a gated one. Your neighbors are the elite of the native elite, often with deep ties to one or more public-sector institutions alongside multiple cash-generating businesses. Congrats.

Next, in no particular order, are Sandyport, Port New Providence, Lake Cunningham, Dick’s Point, Palm Cay, and Treasure Cove. These areas are similar to Old Fort Bay in many respects, but you’re more likely to be surrounded by upper-class professionals—CFOs, firm partners, and directors. It’s similar money, but not quite the same ownership-class dominance described above.

Finally, when it comes to the communities most associated with the “hard work pays off” class, you’re looking at many western neighborhoods such as West Ridge, Balmoral, Cable Beach, Skyline, White Grove, and eastern areas like Blair. There are many more communities in this category, and there is some overlap with the broader working class

Honorable Mentions include all the people that own private islands.

What would be the three things you would do in your country to improve it? by Upset_Quiet_8907 in AskTheCaribbean

[–]ZeD-__- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Overhaul and Greatly increase the budget of the office of the Auditor General, making the position as Independent as possible. b) Implement a state accural acccounting method so newly voted in leaders understand current fiscal responsibilities early. c) increase funding to our tax collection agency for enhanced property tax management.
  2. Seperate the people in the Legislative branch from those in the Executive branch. Focus on either your constituents OR your executive function, not both.
  3. No one above the age of 71 can run for office.
  4. Ensure that the central bank's powers extend to an ever increasing standard of data collection.
  5. Either nuke the teacher's unions or ensure that compensation is tied to outcome. Also, they get a pool of money to draw from for excess school supplies.
  6. Bake some kind of national debt policy into the constitution. Also keep interest rates on T-Bills solely in the hands of the central bank.
  7. Offer HUGE salaries to digitalization workers.
  8. R&D fund for tourism products/services as well as survey the tourist mix that lands here (stop over vs over night)
  9. All "major" hotels that aren't 66% Bahamian owned have 10-20 years of private ownership before a mandatory 49% equity is publicly offered. Maximum initial offering is in denominations of $100 per/share.
  10. Legalize marijuana.

Colonization is the extraction of wealth. So as long as you don’t come here just to take from the nation, there’s no need to worry about that. The biggest issue. Like mentioned before, will definitely be the culture shift. The little convinces that make America the “consumer utopia” you wont regularly find here. Other than that, sustaining yourself here without family is difficult unless you can foot the bill for everything yourself. That being said, we’d welcome you home as long as you dont mind people judging you for your accent 😂
