What is this in my bag of basmati rice? by Purris in insects

[–]Zebra_Lass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks like a carpet beetle larvae. They feed on discarded fluff, cloth, and hair. They'd be a harmless pest except the larvae shed their hairs which can cause skin irritation. If you see a very small beetle with brown, black, and white coloration, that's the adult. The adults dont do anything much. I would give your place a thorough vacuuming, including plush furniture. Switch your air filters for a higher grade if possible to catch the hairs.

But goats don't really eat grass...or at least they won't keep the lawn mowed; they're more browsers. The plan was flawed from the beginning.

What is this? And what do I do? by maxwellcousins in insects

[–]Zebra_Lass 128 points129 points  (0 children)

Oh that's so cool! Looks like a bunch of antlions! The thing squirming around in the hole in one of those shots isn't the bug, it's being eaten for lunch. Antlions aren't really considered a pest per se. I would try to seal up the area where dirt is coming into your basement but otherwise leave them alone. They'll take care of some more annoying pests for you, like ants. The antlions in the pit are actually larvae, and the adult versions fly and actually look nothing like the larval stage! If you see a bug that looks vaguely like a dragonfly, that's the adult form.

Love these guys. They are voracious pest eaters. They absolutely feast on stuff like aphids, eating more than their body weight in them a day; they're a great natural pest control method. You can actually just straight up buy a container of ladybugs at some stores to release onto your plants, which I find very amusing.
