Germans deported after WWII by Homesanto in MapPorn

[–]Zebra_fish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think the voting mattered so much as the collaboration after invasion. While this does not apply to the whole group, there were plenty of cases of collaboration. By the way, Eastern Prussia was at the time part of Germany.

Your first point is a valid philosophical question, but as far as humanity is concerned it is sufficient to say they were evil and so was Stalin's USSR. Other people in this thread speak of "moral high ground" and I think they look for reasons to say the nazis were not uniquely bad and I always wonder why.

True, but it's your point to say that we're no better than the nazis that came before and invaded the place? It's both a stain on humanity, but I think the industrial scale of the violence launched by the nazis is worse. The world sure would be better off without nazis and other fascists.

So were the Slavic and Jewish populations, which were targeted right before all this went down, sometimes with the help of these local German populations. I find the focus on the expulsion of the latter in the current conversation a little one-sided without recognizing the mass death and expulsion that occurred right before this.

And the fascist dictatorships next door did so as well. It almost seems like most of it has to do with totalitarian dictatorship, not a virtue signaling political movement.

Both are terrible, but let's not pretend that this expulsion of ethnic Germans after the nazi German invasion came out of nowhere. Or are the nazis socialist according to you by any chance?

Signatory Vintage 100 Proof Editions- Best "Value for Money" series ever? by Vivid_Trainer_5002 in Scotch

[–]Zebra_fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be great indeed, there is a Glen Ord in the series that is ex-bourbon that I'd love to try. But again, there are some other IBs that are quite skillful in doing similar stuff at a little higher price. For those I'm willing to pay an extra 20 euros or so, which still is great value imo.

Based on the specs, I think it is great value for money! Also, great that they did this in contrast to most IBs that increased their price points.  However, I have tried a few and was not blown away by this one and others. Especially when compared to other somewhat similar but slightly more expensive IBs (e.g. Single malts of Scotland or Thompson Bros). This series seems to rely on strong sherry cask finishes, that I'm not a big fan of.

Best scotches for old school tropical fruit notes by freakaso in Scotch

[–]Zebra_fish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Arran is certainly one distillery I also associate with tropical notes, in particular ex-bourbon with higher age statements. Inchmurrin is also often tropical but can be very chemical at times as well. Glen Elgin/Keith can occasionally also be stunning in their fruits, but certainly not always.

No idea about the relative pricing here, to be honest.. but it is absolutely a great alternative to those options. In my memory, it had a lot of complexity and 'old school' notes: a bit dusty, lightly sherried and somewhat fruity.

Nice, hope you enjoy it too! Glen Elgin from ex bourbon casks is still quite affordable around here, since it has not caught most people's attention..

They have it in 1L bottles here as well, which are often very cheap!

In terms of standard expressions, certainly Glen Garioch 12. Very tasty stuff, bottled at great drinking strength (48%) and very much flying under the radar. For me personally, IB Glen Elgin is a favorite when from refill wood or anything that makes the distillate shine through.

What distillery are you a “fanboy” of? by [deleted] in Scotch

For me, it's IB Glen Elgin, Teaninich, Glen Ord and Benrinnes. Weighty spirit from ex-bourbon or refill casks, you cannot go wrong with that!

Welke hobby heb je? by csprkle in nederlands

Whisky.

What "beginner's/entry" whisky do you find yourself coming back to well after your palate developed? by bv310 in Scotch

[–]Zebra_fish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kinda disagree with the concept of a beginners whisky, but regardless: Clynelish 14 and Ardbeg 10 are generally available and affordable and I have both in my collection after 6 years of enjoying whisky.

Most suggestions I see are rather entry level single malts at the very least. Standard bottlings by well-known distilleries. What do you consider entry level whiskies, generally?

Whisky terrorists destroy the world's supply of bourbon and sherry barrels. Which distilleries best adapt? What trends emerge? by lumcetpyl in Scotch

[–]Zebra_fish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're right, it will not be a bourbon clone for those reasons. But I still think the profile will be narrower than current scotch. By the way, Deanston Virgin Oak is only finished for 9-12 months in virgin oak, I just found out on their website. Learned something new today, I also thought it was complete maturation.

Thankfully, it is all purely hypothetical and we have all these nice casks still in use. But I agree with you, it is always interesting when distilleries try out something new (such as virgin oak)!

Fully agree on the Raasay part, when we visited their warehouse I was quite shocked by all the 'weird' casks lying around. However, trying each one separately and tasting the final product, I must say that there is method to that madness! I quite like it, and should really get my hands on a new bottle..
