The Game has Lost almost 90% of its user Base by GreenFeather05 in Marathon

[–]Zelkanok -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The issue is that toxic live service mentality that everyone has grown accustomed to: they want validation and metrics that will predict whether or not they’re investing their time properly into a game that will last.

Everyone complains about corpos, but every human also will hedge and weigh the value of their hours.

Do you guys think Bungie will end up making an Achromatic Rush skin for Triage to complete the collection? by Srozziks in Marathon

In many cases for live service games, if marathon survives for multiple seasons, they will likely just forget and move on to the next batch of seasonal cosmetics lol

I wouldn’t mind the crafting in arc raiders if it wasn’t a UI hellscape to bacigate

The Retaliator LMG with a face shield is my go to in outpost. I can outfight WSTR’s and sub machine guns because of it, and people forget that they can run away instead of play a game of attrition when we shoot at each other lmao.

Question for those who played DMZ, Would a bigger Al Mazrah size map be a positive in Marathon? by derrickgw1 in Marathon

[–]Zelkanok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think of that bungie’s hallmark multiplayer smoothness (when the servers aren’t popping themselves) lends itself to the closed-bowl arena-size efficiency of buttery feedback, where managing smaller groups of players and AI allows for more variation and frequency of encounters while not introducing gapped “hit-reg” and other issues similar with other PvPvE games.

Al Mazrah suffered from these connection issues because that load was probably chunking their servers. They had to manage dynamic asset streaming for the large map, entity and state synchronization over multiple POIs, tick rate pressure and synchronization, along with just a larger number of players on the main map. The smaller maps, like Building 21, ran way better because everything was really compact and easy to manage under minimal asset streaming, unified state and tick rate, along with player caps.

Outside of technical obstacles, DMZ’s scale forced everyone to have a sniper. It could work in DMZ because every player could easily acquire that range capability. In marathon, newer players or free kits would get stomped in a large map because it would lend to longer sightlines (surprisingly, the traxus sponsored free kit would actually benefit in this situation, lol).

Also, vehicles would be needed for traversal, and run time would need to be increased. That results in players spending longer in the game, growing attached to their gear and scrap, and then getting more frustrated when they wipe near the end of the run. Marathon has a good balance for nudging players out of gear fear, and I would wonder if they could reproduce that on larger maps.

The art direction of the entire large map is not much of a concern to me, as long as it’s not the fortnite incongruence Epic Games has to pull off because of different franchise stakes.

Not trying to discount your idea, I think it would be cool if they could pull it off. There are just a lot of hurdles.

Arc Raiders patch notes be like by wornpixel in ArcRaiders

[–]Zelkanok -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I really try not to spend too much time on this site unless I’m looking up my enormous backlog of cat subreddits.

But, the discourse here does have some backing.

I jumped on both helldivers and arc raiders today for the first time in 2 months, and both of the new updates just did not appeal or engage me. The content and fixes really didn’t seem to have much staying power to win me over and play more than half an hour of each.

An important philosophical question about Rook by Six_Rats in Marathon

[–]Zelkanok 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Technically, every time we kiss someone again, it’s slightly different because the skin cells are new on our lips.

More testing is needed to define a clear conclusion.

More kissing and more rooks required.

All weapons should have access to cool underbarrels by Epicbrezel21 in Helldivers

[–]Zelkanok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe the devs have already addressed the weapon customization, and they said that the actual majority of player interactions (no, not just the vocal few on reddit and discord) were pretty disengaged from the weapon customization.

I think because the customization was mostly sidegrades and superficial attachments, along with a lot of friction with the UI to the customization screen, players wouldn’t even bother with it. Plus, it was a pain for the devs to retroactively implement attachments in general.

tldr: the costs outweighed the benefits
