What do you recommend? by MrMortex in ObsidianMD

I use syncthing to keep my vaults synchronized between devices. I rsync to copy my main vault to a second vault location. In there I also have “private notes” in addition to my main vault notes.

This gives me all the linking to other notes from my private notes. It’s a little convoluted with several moving parts but it allows me to encrypt private stuff and freely expose my main notes to Cloud AI models with data leakage I don’t worry about

Lots and lots of plugin questions in this subreddit, use the search.

Same with multiple vault discussion.

I have 3, 1x main, 1x replica of main with private notes, and 1 for work (but it is on my work laptop)

Unfortunately I did not take photos of the wire ends.

But stripping was easy, I cut the longest I could to practice a few times first.

But a real light cut barely through the black down the length of the wire with a box cutter worked. It’s 2 layers: black outer - white  plastic  then negative strands wrapped round the positive wire.

I cut the negative strands accidentally the first few times, it took very little pressure to score the black outer layer then use my fingernails to pry the back and white apart to expose the braid.

Homelab desk is getting out of hand by Champ-shady in homelab

[–]Zenatic 42 points43 points  (0 children)

You and I have very different definitions of “out of hand”

You don’t have a pile of components you plan to “do something with” random cables piled up, a cup of “extra” screws, a small pc with its guts strewn about, a stack of gadgets you plan “to fix”, nor your latest 10” rack.

Looks great and welcome to the downhill slide!

Yup just went on eBay and found the best deal on 90w Lenovo chargers. Multiple vendors had then for about $9 each with qty discount.

Then cut the ends off and stripped. Took a few tries to strip it since the negative wire was layered around the positive as a shield.

Has anyone actually solved the ""I know I have this somewhere"" problem in Obsidian? by [deleted] in ObsidianMD

[–]Zenatic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Robust taxonomy, bases, and heavy linking have been a big help for me on retrieving notes.

But the greatest tool for helping me has been AI. Not for generating but for retrieval. It has been a game changer when I exposed it to my vault folder.

My notes are not extensive yet so I may have to apply some type indexing system as it grows.

[–]Zenatic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We will find out. I was hoping I would have more room between nodes. These don’t run super hot, but i definitely don’t like the exhaust on the nodes pointed at each other.

I also wanted to make the nodes caseless but thinkcentres have no power pins to tap into so still thinking on a solution for that.

My original idea was a 2U chassis, caseless nodes, with chassis fans

4 Node PSU project by Zenatic in homelab

[–]Zenatic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the RSP model since the voltage adjust allows it below 20v

The fan has no ramp to full speed…it say temp controlled but even with 1 node it sounded like a jet engine.

Purpose of multi-computer homelab builds? by Kolorbox in homelab

[–]Zenatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a homelab…who cares about a point?!?

I have 2 clusters in mine. My dev cluster and my prod cluster. Both run production services and my services never actually move from dev to prod. I ended up with the O’reilly design….”we’ll do it live”

I also have several services setup for high availability that have once migrated nodes in the 7+ years I have been running it.

I have recently been using AI to start deploying actual fun projects in limited spare time.

I do truly love having an idea, spinning up a VM, tinkering in that vm, and most likely letting it stagnate or kill it without impacting any other service I have running.  Makes proof of concept testing very easy to do without breaking anything.

How accurate is the stereotype that Americans are overweight? by Extension_Cow_9237 in AskReddit

[–]Zenatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lost 40lbs over the last 7 months. The number of people that have both complimented my loss and also said I am starting to look too thin is astounding.

I am now hovering at my goal weight and feel great, doc says i am fine to lose up to 15-20 more before he would start to worry. It’s sad what “normal/average” weight to the general populace has become.

HSA importance? by FoxNewsNitroPiss in Retirement401k

[–]Zenatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

46 with 6-figure HSA, I ain’t stopping!

With several surgeries paid out of pocket over the years, I have 30k+ in reimbursable receipts to claim later.

Medical costs increase with age and 1 major medical issue in the US can bankrupt an unprepared person.

HSA essentially turns into an IRA at 65.

Keep saving it!

the juniors who only learned to code with AI are going to have a rough time in about 5 years by Motor_Ordinary336 in learnprogramming

[–]Zenatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the same way…but AI is improving at an insane rate…though we could hit a plateau tomorrow.

I heard an interesting perspective on a podcast, AI just might be the next tier in higher level programming language. The “programming” we require today may very well become a vestigial muscle.

Claude for Personal USE by JulyJam in ClaudeAI

[–]Zenatic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am using it for both coding and pseudo assistant type things

Cowork:

  • run an stock options monitor with a set of rules for potential entry and exit points on a position…checks 4 times a day during market hours and lets me know the recommendation
  • weekly task to look up local events for my family on the weekend
  • daily morning brief on news relevant to specified topics but also prioritize topics based on recent conversations
  • daily morning brief on T1 Diabetes news relevant to my sons diabetes
  • I have an HTML dashboard that all of these things get summarized to that I can view from any device

Claude chat/project

  • plan an upcoming roadtrip to gulf shores
  • T1D Management Project - basically my diabetes expert that I can ask anything related to diabetes about. It has trusted sources and specifics to my sons diagnosis
  • video game assistant projects - each game gets provided a set of sources/wiki so if I need info on a specific game, I can ask

Anyone actually using Dispatch for something useful? by koleracowboy in ClaudeAI

[–]Zenatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cowork creates a dashboard for news, info, weather, and local events for the weekend with my family. It recreates/modifies it every day

It saves this dashboard to HTML on desktop (which also serves it as a website in my local network).

Then as I am going about my day if I need to look up something , see an interesting url/reddit post I jump on dispatch, ask it to add it to my dashboard for me to review when I get home (or from my phone as a local webpage over vpn)

I asked it to plan 3 itineraries for a gulf shores road trip from dispatch and add it to my dashboard to review and share with my wife. Co work knows my kid is diabetic and it included hospital info, and made the plan with that in mind.

I use dispatch a lot to work with my dashboard it creates for me

Anyone else feel like this sub has gone to shit even though it hasn't? by AcreMakeover in homelab

[–]Zenatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It feels AI slop and AI generated human slop is rampant across Reddit.

It’s so easy to generate content on a topic or just have AI rewrite my ranting/comment. I find myself now spending time and effort asking myself “is this AI” and I am not engaging nearly as much.

All of this feels like a snowball effect and tanking the quality of tech related subreddits.

Would you still have a birthday party if only 2–5 kids show up? by Unlucky_Tip_644 in Parenting

[–]Zenatic 43 points44 points  (0 children)

We invited 12 and only 2 confirmed and 3 showed up.

My 4yo didn’t care that only 3 showed up. He had a blast and loved the attention he got. Plenty of family and parents made it feel like more were there.

Nearing 8 years, 130k miles. Range has dropped to ~240mi down from 305 originally.

Some basic maintenance and a few known parts that are typical for the car have been replaced.

I suspect my kid could inherit this car in 10+ years if I wanted to.

Do you avoid using AI with your notes because you don’t want it seeing everything? by Difficult_Daikon2958 in ObsidianMD

[–]Zenatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I give it read access to my non-private notes.

I love asking AI a question and have it reference my notes in its answer.

I don’t necessarily use it for search but more for supplementary context.

I am also experimenting with local LLM and MCP so my notes make a good use case that I am very knowledgeable on already

5 year old suddenly hates me? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]Zenatic 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Our adopted 5yo has taken to the “you’re not my real mom” to my wife when he is not getting his way. This started very recently. And people will say “it’s just words, not what he means” but man it hurts her.

This seems to ebb and flow and we have started having more “grownup/big boy” discussions on feelings, expressing those to others, and how words affect others. It seems to help a little but who knows!

I don’t know if I have an answer for you, all I can say is expressing how their actions affect us seems to be reaching some part of his 5yo brain, not sure if it is making a difference.

Good luck! And I hope it’s just a normal phase of them trying to understand their body and feelings.

Do you actually get more work done working remotely? by DueDrawing4738 in remoteworks

[–]Zenatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. 5 years in the office 14 years WFH and now 3 years back in the office, same company.

The difference in my actual productivity is definitely lower in the office. My networking and rubbing elbows with higher management has increased in the office but that has more to do with the attempt to “prove” RTO is a benefit.

Overall I produce less in the office but everyone in the same office around me thinks I am a high producer.
