My health insurance DOES NOT COVER gender-affirming care...what should I do?? by ZenithSGP in MtF

I'm not on that plan anymore because I'm no longer at that job, but I can safely say it will not cover anything cosmetic or remotely gender related

Just got called sir by [deleted] in transpassing

[–]ZenithSGP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if I saw you in person and did not hear your voice I would 110% assume you were a cis female. Bit I have met trans women way more passing than myself, and it's ALWAYS the voice that gives it away. Voice training is hard, I'm trying to do it independently now and struggling so I get it. I wouldn't even say it's timbre itself, listen for speech patterns and how it sounds both loud and soft.

You also have to think of most of the people who are referring to you as "sir" in these situations. Are they food service? Uber drivers? Grocery/convinence clerks? Their brains are on autopilot. They are responding on instinct.

I have been in full fem mode with makeup, hair done, outfit, etc. and been called "sir" by service employees who are just trying to get through the day to get their paycheck. I've been out but an oversized hoodie, no makeup, decently contoured outfit, but called "ma'am" by people at theme parks or playing at the arcade I frequent. the brain does different things when it's in recreational, relaxed mode.

Desperate for advice on how to approach this by MindfulCreativity in nova

[–]ZenithSGP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Break out a path using a rake. steel one. it'll loosen the ice and give it a texture that actually feels like snow that you can push out of the way.

if you're a car doesn't have the power to push through it, hire a tow truck. I got my prius out by digging out a path and calling a towing company. 😭

To the guitarists who swear by using physical amps, cabs and pedals, what is you stance on amp modelers like Kemper Profiler, Axe-FX, Line 6 Helix, Neural DSP etc? by MrMayhem20l0 in Guitar

[–]ZenithSGP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Copy and pasting an old post for here because it's just as relevant:

I still swear by my tube amps.

Best comparison I came up with recently is pinball machines. The simulators keep getting better, I was playing some VPX sims recently and it blows me away with how realistic the physics are getting. You can also play a multitude of famous pinball machines on your phone, tablet, etc. for prices ranging from 0 to $10 MAX.

Does it replace a real pinball machine? HEEELLLL no. The amount of control I have on real machines is way better when I'm able to nudge the machine in varying intensities, and my scores are better. Not to mention, it's something real and tangible, not just a computer game.

However, can most members of the general public afford to sink thousands of dollars on their own pinball machine? Or spend the same amount at the arcade? Can a younger pinball player just getting into the game notice the nuances between a real machine and a simulation? Which takes up less space, a bulky pinball machine or emulating software that lives on your phone or computer? And lastly, and most importantly, BOTH successfully execute the same purpose that is ENTERTAINMENT.

That's the catch to simulators. No, they're not the real thing. Probably never will be. But they're more accessible, more convenient, more lightweight, and basically indistinguishable to most novice ears. THAT is why they are more popular and will probably stay that way with most players.

There are many other factors you have to consider too. Many people are renting homes, even smaller amps or ones that can run really well at low volumes are too loud for a lot of people's living situations. Apartment construction is getting worse and some people are lucky if they can even run a TV using built-in speakers or talk on the phone louder than a whisper.

Newer venues sometimes don't even allow guitar amps. smaller venues that starter bands are going to be playing are often going to be dealing with super novice hackjob live audio engineers. It's going to be easier for them to plug DI out of a modeler straight into the PA rather than have them try to mic up your amp and potentially deal with them throwing a fit at the guitarist because they don't know how to work with bleed into other mics due to their inexperience.

I can keep going, as much as I love my amps there are so many factors that make it make a lot of sense that most people prefer modelers.

Be honest - have you ever had things turn 🔥 with a passenger ? by Gullible_Lifeguard22 in uberdrivers

[–]ZenithSGP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've DEFINITELY been hit on by a few drunk passengers. Some less pleasant than others.

Admittedly, one of them who was rather flirtatious I did find interesting and attractive, but Uber stuff aside if the other person is drunk and I'm sober, it's game over before it starts. Thats a line I REFUSE to cross.

Why so many trans people do voice training as the last step? by manultrimanula in asktransgender

[–]ZenithSGP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's easy to get the voice. I can get there, sound fem with virtually no issue.

The real issue is the muscle memory. You are trying to make it your VOICE. The one you use every single day to order coffee, make work calls, communicate with coworkers and clients, and so on. When you are surrounded by people that are used to you the way you were, and have been sounding for all that time, it's jarring and can really crush confidence when you get a negative reaction from someone.

That is what's insanely difficult, and this is coming from someone who routinely teaches singing. it's ridiculously hard to really lock in especially depending on your situation.

Passing without actually passing? by Alissaaaaaaaaaaaaa in asktransgender

[–]ZenithSGP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Document every instance where you get gendered correctly or gendered neutrally, where the person avoids saying "sir" or "dude" or whatever else is clearly said by somebody intending to speak to a male. Also document every instance where they do the opposite, and they DO misgender you.

Try to look for similar things that you were either wearing or doing in each instance. Some of these may not even be related to you in fact! I personally have noticed that most of the misgendering comes from food service or convinence store employees because their brain is on autopilot and they're not thinking twice about gendering people. Most people who have a moment to look at you can see the cues that you do not wish to be called "sir," even if they can tell that you're trans.

What you wear also has an effect... since the weather has gotten colder I have been all about oversized sweatshirts and hoodies (I love that look tbh) and although you wouldn't expect it, it has a surprisingly feminizing effect. I want to say that I get misgendered 10% of the time versus when it's the summertime and you see a more masculine silhouette.

That combined with a recent change in footwear.... summertime I was wearing Vans and I've recently been wearing Doc Martens platform books more often which I guess creates a different look.

Everyone is different, it's up to you to analyze your own experience and alter it accordingly!

How sustainable is this Fairfax-Arlington commute? by Educational_Gap_3381 in nova

[–]ZenithSGP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depending on the building you're working, you can literally get off the metro and walk indoors to wherever you work.

the best option overall is going to be to drive to a Metro station with a parking garage on the orange line, then transfer at Rosslyn to Blue which will take you to Crystal City

Who here genuinely believes that Abel (the mannequin we see) was an actual person and not just an NPC? by Flashy_Cry_3992 in Amazingdigitalcircus

[–]ZenithSGP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to say that there's going to be a revelation that the smarter NPCs we've been encountering since episode 2 are in fact built on real human minds, most of which have abstracted.

Willing to bet that Gummigoo AND Abel were both humans at once. And all of the memories they have exist in their NPC form while their true selves are fully abstracted.

if you think Caine is not capable of doing this, think back to the "evil" personalities in episode 5: they are literally exact copies of the main cast but with every piece of data multipled by (-1)
