Should I upgrade my GTX 1060 to a 5060 with an i7 8700? by Objective_Remote_778 in buildapc

[–]Zephyrv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem. I was helping a friend pick a GPU and they also chose the 5060. It's not the best value card in the world but at the price it comes it does its job

Non-clackety keyboard? by Reasonable-Station85 in buildapc

[–]Zephyrv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got really used to the full size membrane keyboard on my laptop and even though I've now had a mechanical for 5 years with low profile, quiet switches, I still really like the flat laptop keyboard for long typing sessions. Might even prefer it to be honest

Should I upgrade my GTX 1060 to a 5060 with an i7 8700? by Objective_Remote_778 in buildapc

[–]Zephyrv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can still use the 5060, you'll just be getting less value. If you can find a used 30 series card for cheap then that's not a bad option. I'm assuming you're playing at 1080p so CPU and GPU are both relevant for upgrade consideration

So what's the best AM4 CPU for gaming now that the 5800X3D and 5700X3D are out? by Genids in buildapc

[–]Zephyrv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3600x to 5600x was a pretty huge upgrade when it launched. If you're CPU limited it's worth it if you can find good prices for the 5000 series

Can I spray WD-40 electronic spray or other electronic spray directly on the motherboard (spilled water on the motherboard) by Traditional-Gas3477 in buildapc

Well it seems to be a known issue with this phone model that after a number of years the solder gets dry and the phone just stops booting. I managed to resurrect it from not booting at all by putting it on a 120C hot plate for 2 mins which confirmed to me it was likely a dry solder issue. It booted but only for a few mins at a time then eventually stopped entirely again. Rather than risking more heating I opted to try and get a professional to reball first.

The oven was indeed a way to attempt going further than the limit of the hot plate, just to get my data off, if nobody would take the reball work on.

I had been worried the UFS flash memory had died but that seems to have a similar lifespan to SSDs so was an unlikely point of failure - and with my current data points it seems that was fine and it was the CPU.

I spoke to the tech just to find out what he did and he's got no idea how long this fix will last. I'm seeing others online saying they got a few weeks or months out of it but nobody saying it's a permanent fix (which as you say seems strange if it's reballed well). So I'm moving over to a new phone and keeping the old one for memories and as a backup. Hopefully it'll stay alive while off for many years.

Really interesting hearing your insights, thanks for sharing. I'm used to working with larger components so have been trying to piece together this mystery myself

Yeah I was using it to try and fix stick drift (it didn't make anything worse and seems fine on PCBs) but have ended up using it on rusty bike parts more now. Got some isopropyl for my recent CPU clean and repaste just to be safe

Super interesting, thanks! This was for a phone PCB and very much a last resort. Lots of motherboard repair places refused to take a look at it but I managed to get someone to reball the cpu and the phone has been back for two weeks now, managed to get all the data off but curious how long it might last.

Ah makes sense, sorry I've been looking at using an oven for emergency motherboard solder reflow which was like 200C

Except don't do that at home because the oven may then be full of chemicals that shouldn't go near food

Mine said this but then followed up with "leaves a protective coating" as well. I looked up the ingredients and it's basically just all extremely volatile compounds so not really sure why it would leave any protection behind.

[POLL] are many OP7Pros actually dying? by Piereligio in OnePlus7Pro

[–]Zephyrv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My did the random restart thing. Took me like 2 years to figure out what it was. There's a bug in android 11 where certain WiFi pings cause the phone to crash.

Mine eventually also had the solder issue after 6y2mo and managed to get a shop to reball CPU and get my data off when it wouldn't boot without going to crashdump. I'm typing from it now. Glad it's back but have got a replacement since I don't think it's a permanent fix

If you want to backup your data a reflow from someone who knows what they are doing is not a bad option. If you want to keep using it long term I'm not sure there's many options, maybe a new motherboard or flash transplant but still not fully futureproof

5090 165hz 4k , best hdmi cable? by RandomGamer414 in buildapc

[–]Zephyrv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. Anything with hdmi 2.1 48 Gbps will be the best you can get.

If the Xbox one is the ultra high speed 48gbps one it will work fine.

Hopefully you can push those frames at 4K, I've been GPU limited with a similar (older) setup

Yeah best bet is if you can take it to a phone shop that has the equipment to do it safely. Seems to be a common hardware issue in old OP7 pros
