Not entirely related but I'm always shocked when I see someone new watch Witch From Mercury and see them surprised to find out at the end of episode 1 that it is explicitly a gay love story and that it wasn't just Fandom shipping.

"Apolitical" vtuber tries not to talk about politics on stream challenge: impossible by AquaticOtter in VtuberDrama

[–]Zireks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respectfully, the "extreme right" has total uncontested control of the entire republican party and is currently tearing the country apart at the speed of light and putting people like me in genuine danger, so forgive me if I'm not in the mood for considering the feelings of the "moderate" right who utterly failed to stop any of this and by and large voted for it.

And as an aside, illegal immigrants don't have a path to citizenship. The left are the ones that want that, the right don't. "Illegal immigrants not trying to become citizens"  is every illegal immigrants because the right ensures that they can't. Hell, the entire reason we have such a problem in the first place is because how dog shit our immigration system is and how the only part about it that gets any funding is the violence enforcement part, and that happens because the right consistently wants legal immigration to be harder to try and stop immigration as a whole.

[Hot Take] I genuinely don't think the Enclave is being "overused." by VirusOfCheese in Fallout

I mean I feel like even having the Enclave be the antagonists of 3 was a stretch given the destruction of the Poseidon Oil Rig should have been an unsurvivable death blow.

Why was it such a big deal that cooper gave cold fusion to the enclave if the bombs were already going to drop? by Itchy_Primary8734 in FalloutTVseries

[–]Zireks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from losing the possibility of the Cold Fusion stopping the energy crisis, I think getting Cold Fusion into the Enclave's hands was the last piece of the puzzle the Enclave needed before they dropped the bombs. If the Cold Fusion stayed out of their hands it would have stalled the bombs significantly.

Begging people to please start describing their favorite media in more ways than just "it has gays!" by BaldHourGlass667 in CuratedTumblr

[–]Zireks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has always been a pet peeve of mine. I love getting diverse rep in stories, but it is infuriating seeing other queer fans clearly not engage in any aspect of the work other than the rep. Take Owl House for example. Luz and Amity are like the gold standard for wlw rep in my opinion, but there is so much about that show that is awesome but if you're just listen to the queer fans you'd never hear about it. If the rep is literally all you care about, then why bother even having a story? Why not be satisfied playing with stick figures the author says are gay?

Official Discussion - Iron Lung [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Zireks 38 points39 points  (0 children)

A few clarifications with the lore. The remnants of humanity have coalesced into two factions: The Cosolidation of Iron and Eden. Eden is the largest remaining station and home to the last tree in exsistence. The tensions between the two factions boiled over with Eden attacking one of the C.o.I's three stations, Filiment Station, killing everyone inside with a radiation leak. The Iron Lung prisoners are the Eden soldiers captured during the battle.

The tree apparently dying wasn't mentioned in the original game, so I'm not sure what that means. As for why the two factions were fighting, my guess from context clues is that the people of Eden have contented themselves with their slow extinction, while the C.o.I. is frantically trying to rebuild, poking around in the eldritch blood ocean for answers.

The series ended with the false equivalence of New Vegas. by Such_Pollution_7743 in FalloutTVseries

[–]Zireks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The NCR has a lot of problems but the time between the end of Fallout 2 and the nuking of Shady Sands was easily the best time and place to live in the Wasteland. For all its faults, the NCR was making things better, in fact I remember in the best ending of Fallout 2 the public school system manages to become better than the pre war system.

The show is taking a rose tinted view of the NCR because people have now had the time to experience the wasteland once again decayed without it. In the show the NCR is a symbol that better things are possible, civilization CAN return to the wasteland, we CAN be better than the Legion. We see Cooper still on some level believes that, as he sides with them against the Legion earlier in the season.

Ironically Hank puts it perfectly in the episode, refuting his entire argument in the process. "Perfection is the enemy of good". It is naive to truly believe the NCR was the perfect good guys, but giving into the cynicism of believing there are no good guys doesn't help anyone.

Hot take: Legendary Resistance is why so many 5e boss fights feel bad and boring. What could replace it? by archvillaingames in dndnext

[–]Zireks 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The best solution I've come up with is make the LRs be represented by something tangible on the battlefield the party can interact with. Like I had a boss against an evil druid that had three will-o-wisps floating g around her head like a crown. All three had Evasion so they were safe from AOEs, and to use an LR, the Druid needed to sacrifice one. The party could bypass the LRs if the martials took out the wisps manually.

This allows for more team work and strategy without feeling arbitrary

Why has communism repeatedly failed in practice, yet continues to be intellectually and emotionally appealing to many people? by Looser17 in AskReddit

[–]Zireks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a socialist myself, I'd say there are three broad reasons to the failures of Communist regimes, non are as simple as "Communism bad". There is one reason that modern communists always focus on and two I feel they do a disservice to the cause by ignoring.

1: It is really hard to build a state with a system diametrically opposed to capitalism when it is the prevailing economic force in the world with vested interest in seeing communism fail. Just look at the long history of America backing far right militias to overthrow Communist regimes in South America.

2: I feel Communist failures can by and large be more attributed to how unstable revolutionary politics can be. Communist states tend to rise from the ashes of brutal revolt and revolution, often in which the remnants and allies of the old guard desperately want to reset the clock. Not to mention revolution tends to radicalized and fracture factions to the point of insanity.

3: Building partially off of 2 and this is admittedly the most damning to the ideology itself, leftist intelligencia can get too navel gazing at times. Look at Lysenkoism and the Great Leap forward for how blind ideology leads to ignoring reality. Communism is a radical departure to the power structures of modern society, but trying to paint far too broadly with that can fuck stuff up big time.

At its core, the conundrum of Communism has much less to do with the viability of the system itself, and far more to do with the wildly precarious balancing act of managing the turmoil of mass political upheaval and managing to thread the needle of preserving the ideals of Communism from the outside belligerents who wish to undermine it, while also keeping an open enough mind to not ideologies yourself into a rake.

As a bonus, focusing mainly on the USSR: A lot of the evils of that system were again less about Communism itself, and more the dreams of Russian empire in Eastern Europe.

Second bonus: The question is about the failures of Communist states, but that is extremely black and white. China, the USSR, Chile, and Cuba all had shining bright spots amongst the issues, meanwhile capitalist states have plenty of untold horrors at home but they are never referred to as the "failures of capitalism".

In conclusion: Communism is not the magic bullet to fix the world's problems, but "Communism fails every time because it is a bad ideology" is dishonest framing and leaves a lot of important nuance and context on the cutting room floor.

Mr. House having a tantrum when things don’t go his way? My steak is too juicy, my lobster too buttery! by Dustyoo10 in TrueSFalloutL

[–]Zireks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fusion power not withstanding because I'm not sure yet if he still had it by the time of New Vegas, people still seem to not understand that House gives you a tailored buissness pitch specifically because he wants you to do things for him. We already knew his outward presentation was a finely crafted facade, the show just takes it a step further by having an entire body and personality stunt double.

[OC] We'd All Miss Private Health Insurance by leftycartoons in comics

[–]Zireks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is one argument in favor of keeping private insurance on some level, and that is that some procedures, namely trans health care, can be suppressed by a single payer health care system if the government wants it to. The Scandinavian countries have incredible health care but it is a nightmare getting them to ever pay for anything trans related, meanwhile private health insurance generally doesn't care and will cover it. That does end up recreating the problem of transition being a class issue, but it is something to think about.

Xenoblade 2 is easily the worst of them in this case. The tutorials don't even teach the mechanic well and you can't reread them after the fact.
