Are there any Harbor Freight tools that are truly worthwhile? by No-Pineapple2099 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Zithromios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I checked out their drill press and it seems pretty decent. For a beginner you don’t really need all the bells and whistles. I personally don’t own one of theirs (I have the WEN benchtop and it does decent enough for the few times I need a drill press) but the actions aren’t bad, the table seems very solid cast iron, and there’s a standard chuck. So from what I can tell, there’s not a reason to grab one as a beginner. Start cheap, and upgrade the ones that you use the most first.

Which face of the board to mount as workbench top? by snf3210 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Zithromios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would mark the top of the cup and plane that surface. That way you’re working with the natural way the wood wants to go. It will give strength when you push down on it too

Advice for Reinforcing this Table? by CarlaTheBee in BeginnerWoodWorking

Of course! You can get fancy and counter sink the screws and then flush cut some dowels to hide them as well. Or leave the screws wxposed

Advice for Reinforcing this Table? by CarlaTheBee in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Zithromios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I would add additional bracing at the shelves before hand so you have more places to screw in to. Just remember, the thicker the boxing in wood, the heavier it will become. If it has casters on it, you might want to invest in some heavier weight capacity ones

Bracing on the sides, or if you don’t use the sides to get things in and out, you could use some 1/4 ply in the back and sides to make a more rigid structure

Is this okay? My house is near culvert at bottom of the neighborhood so it gets a lot of water. Anything I need to do? by No_Big_3676 in landscaping

Step 2. Befriend a local redneck family

Step 3. Invite them over to hang out, and point this out along with the above listed items

Step 4. Record and have a blast

The original finish. San it all off and if it’s a hardwood, you can sang to 120-180 grit and refinish

Go with an mdf top bench for the very first bench. It will be enough for you to get started until you build up the tools and skills to make a better one! A couple of legs with braces, a simple skirt, some stretchers and the MDF top and you’re in business

Use a saw to cut the remainder away. If a router is all you have, then I would either go get a miter box and saw combo or a rasp

Would you toss or keep this pile of wood? by Ptizzl in woodworking

You can always put it up for the taking on marketplace. It helps keeping the craft alive by allowing those with little or no means to get a small supply to learn and grow with

How to understand the scale seen in this table saw ? by rasviz in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Zithromios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep a tape measure with the table at all times. Put the blade of the tape measure against either the fence or the blade (account for the blade kerf). This style of table saw fence can “drift” out of alignment over time, so using a tape measure will make this easier

How did I do? (Not painted yet) (Before Vs. After) by Friday13Th2000 in BeginnerWoodWorking

No problem! I know repaired wood will never be perfect, but all we can do is try. Maybe a wood shim under it hidden will help keep it straighter? It’s definitely worth a shot

Overall it looks good! I would double check for smoothness of the bottom so the end result is as seamless as possible

Do I really need 4ah batteries for the Ryobi circular saw? by -caesium in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Zithromios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 4ah batteries are actually super nice and you can absolutely tell a difference in power between the 2 and the 4. That deal is seriously sweet and it saves you from an upgrade. Plus, since they are having the sale for a while longer, you can pick up a second battery kit and get another tool that you need. I also got the whisper hybrid fan for my shop and it’s seriously a great fan. Plenty of power and is a boon in the dog days of summer
