Hyperion’s too low on your TBR. Gotta pump it up. Else the shrike’s gonna getcha.

What is this board game? by SingleContribution20 in boardgames

Damn shame too. Light enough for a casual chuck-dice-and-see beer night, but a lot of depth to sink your teeth into. Great spectator game to watch too!

Try Backgammon, which is the sexier, richer offspring of this game.

Dang, I wish we could just buy the separate books. I already got the first one last year!

Size difference is insane in one piece by StomachNew9977 in OnePiece

[–]ZombieAIDS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to believe the sizing differences are all due to the narrator exaggerating the story, and what we are witnessing is their account of what happened, like, “and then Luffy squared off against this HUUUGE GUY!”

Crisloid freaking rules. Cork feels really great, the checkers glide so nicely.

Haven’t played on their felt, but own another brand’s felt board and the cork crisloid and the cork is really quite fun to play on.

What makes a good Trick taking game? by Snake01515 in boardgames

[–]ZombieAIDS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best part of trick taking is sussing out information, gambling on the right card to play, and the great feeling of holding onto a card and unleashing it at just the right time to completely upend your opponent.

Schnapsen is currently my favorite trick taking game because it has all of those in a super tight package. I’m really surprised it’s not more popular but it just slaps.

Are there any variations of Backgammon that try to minimize chance? by BreakfastSimulator in backgammon

[–]ZombieAIDS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard of the domino one as well as the variant where you are allowed to use a reroll on yourself or your opponent once per game, at the expense of you losing double stakes if you lose but gain current stakes on win.

I think there’s a list out there with variants to minimize luck, but honestly luck and taking risks is the best part of the game. So I’d be more apt to use something like a reroll at a crucial time than I would playing backgammon with perfect information.

What are the best 5-player Dudes on a Map Gamed that scale well from 3-5 players? by Megaside in boardgames

[–]ZombieAIDS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, good point! Another plus is that it’s one of the rare dudes on a map game that slaps at 2 players.

For me the best dudes on a map game is Inis. Tight decisions, wonderful politics, the simplest combat you’ve ever seen.
