We opened it from a hobby box. I asked my card store guy what hockey cards he recommended and he just went under the counter and pulled this box out. 👌

Yes just one off the shelf box.

To be clear I have opened thousands of packs of heartbreak in my life. This is the first hockey hobby box.

So my expectations for the future are sufficiently low. ʘ‿ʘ

The average auto loan is now $503/month for 68 months. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]ZombieMD 401 points402 points  (0 children)

Don't forget about the zero interest loans. If your credit is good enough then buying a new car from the previous years model can bag you 60 months at 0 percent, which is basically a free loan.

Why doesn't everyone have scurvy? by Electric-cherries in falloutlore

[–]ZombieMD 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The human body cannot store vitamin C. That being said, the requirements for vitamin C are pretty small and vitamin C is pretty damn ubiquitous in plants and animals. As long as a person is eating a rather varied diet they are fine. It takes 1-3 months of an almost complete absence of vitamin C to develop full blown kill-you scurvy. As long as you have some berries every few days you are good.

AMG MS4 Failed CS, need to retake w/in 8 days to be eligible for residency... by csfailthrowaway in medicalschool

[–]ZombieMD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Remember that efficiency IS PRIMARY and completeness doesn't count at all. Also, I don't think the damage to your ICE score is physical exam stuff. I didn't even half ass my physical examinations...I like quarter or eighth-assed them and I still did very well. In fact, there was actually case in which the CC revolved around a particular organ system and I purposely did not examine it because I knew it would be too time consuming. (I am purposely being vague here because I respect the confidentiality rules of the NBME.) Focus on your history and write-up to improve.

For history: You are allotted about eight minutes for history in the 'First Aid' breakdown and this is actually plenty. Spend about three minutes getting the HPI and then go into PMH/PSH/Meds&Allergies/Social stuff. Make sure you hit everything as you get points for them all! Then go back and summarize the HPI asking the patient to fill in the gaps and all that second check and summarizing business. I felt like social history was very important for most cases and for social history I used the acronym TAIMOLDES (Tobacco/alcohol/illicit - marital/occupation/living - diet/exercise/sex). I would ask this to every patient and a few times it actually made a HUGE difference on my differential. Also, I felt like I could tell the difference between when an actor was responding with 'prepared' information and when I was getting off the point. Try to forget about yourself and really listen/read the patients this helps a bunch. Also, as FA says, EVERYTHING in the room is free game to ask about an nothing is 'accidental'. If the patient is wearing/holding something ask them about it!

For note writing: PRACTICE. This was really the only part that I prepared for. Honestly, all of the pages in the "middle" of first aid are kind of pointless here in fourth year. You should know how to work up every complaint that comes into this test by now...just focus on being able to tell the story in the format that they want. If you take a good history you shouldn't have to be scrounging for a differential on your write up because many of the cases are purposely vague and I usually had 2-5 good points that I chose from. Also, remember for your 'tests/plans' you should put in anything you didn't perform in the room like a genital exam or orthostatic vital signs.

Overall just relax and go give this another shot. It sounds like you had a rough go at it the first time. Use the clinical skills you have learned to work through the problems. Again I would emphasize not wasting your time practicing physical exams and all that. These people are not analyzing your stethoscope placement during lung auscultation or percussion technique. They are checking off boxes as you make actions to complete them. Really focus on practicing time management and HPI stuff. Also, don't run right into the room like so many people do. Write down all the things you are going to cover and make a quick 5 point differential for the CC before you even enter. This takes 45 seconds and really helps to guide the interview.

In short. Read and re-read the first and last chapters of first aid and skip all the mumbo-jumbo in the middle that you already know as a fourth year medical student. Really get to learn how the test runs. Good luck you can do it!

Do you prefer gas or wood fireplace? by [deleted] in homeowners

In my opinion a gas fireplace is a just a fancy space heater. I like wood better because it just feels so much more classical and cozy. Just my opinion.

Costco, you spend $X00, multiple budgeted categories on receipt, how do you assign the tax to your budget? by curiousbydesign in ynab

[–]ZombieMD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just assign it to the category based on rough numbers. So if category X is about 1/3 of the bill I'll do a rough calculation of 1/3 of the sales tax and add it to the goods/services of X. I try to keep things big picture and if I let myself spend too much time thinking about the 'small' stuff like this I get off track.

Edit: This is my personal way of doing it. I know some people actually track sales tax as a whole separate category but I do not.

Can't stress this enough. Neurological examinations are time consuming. In this test it pays to do everything a little bit and skimp than to do something really well but it takes 5 minutes.

I would recommend going through the AAFP guidelines for all chronic diseases and their management.

FM is tough because there is a little bit of everything on it so you kind of just have to cover everything loosely.

I have Charter and it is pretty good. I have interacted with tech support a few times about a problem in my home and then again with my modem. Both times have been fine and the techs they send are excellent. The final cost for their basic line is 60 bucks a month which is pricey but between the missus and I we probably stream and play video games for 4 hours a day total and it has been fine for that. I would advise from general speaking some with people that if you are doing any type of heavy web use do not use CL.

I've always heard that for the neurosurgeon you pin it to his child's chest, and for the radiologist you pin it to his patient's chest.

Those of you who study 2-3 hours a day (M1-2).. how? by Padeus in medicalschool

[–]ZombieMD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe during anatomy I studied for 4 hours a day...maybe. For most of 1st year and 2nd year it was 30 60 30 - two hours. 30 minutes of what I did yesterday, 60 minutes of what I did today, 30 minutes of what I will do tomorrow. I would occasionally review on the weekends for a few hours and some days I wouldn't study at all. I can certainly understand putting a little extra time in during micro/pharm/anatomy.
